From what I have read and understand in the gospels, Jesus' head was wrapped with a separate cloth than his body, which makes the shroud of Turin an impossibility since it is one whole piece of cloth.
John 20
4The two were running together; and the other disciple ran ahead faster than Peter and came to the tomb first;
5and stooping and looking in, he saw the linen wrappings lying there; but he did not go in.
6And so Simon Peter also came, following him, and entered the tomb; and he saw the linen wrappings lying there,
7and the face-cloth which had been on His head, not lying with the linen wrappings, but rolled up in a place by itself.
I may be wrong, but I don't think Jesus would have left behind an image that had the potential of becoming an object of worship.
I agree the shroud of Turin is a hoax.
Interesting, I've heard and read of several hoax theories. But how do you suppose the hoax was executed? It is apparent the Shroud of Turin is way older than the advent of nuclear technology, yet the microscopic examination of the image indicates that the microscopic fibers of the thread are "seared" only on the exterior shell of each fiber and not through the whole fiber. If the faked image were painted, heated, or exposed to any other process indicative for those primitive times, then the effect would penetrate and soak straight through the microscopic fibers. Whereas, a nanosecond radiation burst would only damage the external surface of the fibers. Very mysterious, indeed.
