I am blessed to live in the Southern Hemisphere. The problem with the North is that there is far more pollution than in the South. Not just smog but also light pollution.
Here in Melbourne Australia, light pollution prevents us seeing the brilliance of the stars. But a half hour drive into the country will reveal more of their glory whereas in the Northern Hemisphere it is very hard to find any places which are not seriously affected by light and air pollution.
Here in Melbourne we have been treated to a glorious display with Comet McNaught. This comet is way better than Halles comet. Its tail travels a third of the sky. I didn't know about it and I walked outside to go to my shed and here is this thing in the sky. What a shock. I ran through the house yelling "Come on everyone. Come and look at this". My father is almost 80 years old and he has never seen anything like it.
Here is a link of a photo from the Brisbane Ranges which is half an hour from where I live. The comet was just as clear here in Melbourne when I saw it.
