He suffered pain and grief that he did not believe Christ could heal, but that when Christ challenged him he broke down in tears suffering even more pain and grief and so that in his tears he presented his faith to the Lord.
I have considered that the man in question said he has faith, ("I believe") and is it implied that his son had no faith and he asked Christ to help his son who had no faith? Maybe...
Or is it that he (the father) has faith at some level, but cannot muster enough to get the job done?
Christ saw right through the man in that he had none or even little faith, so when Christ challenged the man his guilt and his desperation broke him to confess that whatever little faith he had, and beg the Lord to help him believe...
...I've felt that too. It is not uncommon.
