Full Version: Babylon: A Port City?
Christian-Forum.net > General discussion > What do you say?

I just stumbled upon an interesting series of facts. This may end up being a strange post and maybe I'll soon look back at it and laugh. But maybe not.

Okay, for those who have been visiting this forum for a while, you know that I have a particular interest in Mystery Babylon. I'm not quite sure why, but Revelation 17 is one of my favorite chapters in all of the Bible. (I say that about many chapters I suppose.) Anyway, many traditional prophetical scholars point to Revelation 18:17 and assert that Mystery Babylon, wherever it is, must be a port city:

For in one hour so great riches is come to nought. And every shipmaster, and all the company in ships, and sailors, and as many as trade by sea, stood afar off...

It is difficult to argue with this logic. I, for one, believe that we fail to take the Bible literally enough all too often - even when interpreting the sometimes strange Book of Revelation. Yet, when evaluating Revelation 17-18 in light of Isaiah 13-14 and Jeremiah 50-51, the literal interpretation seems to point to literal Babylon, though Revelation 17-18 do admittedly seem to point to Rome (which is a port city on seven hills). I won't here hash all of this out, but in the early centuries the pagan priesthood migrated from Babylon to Rome (see Alexander Hislop's Two Babylons). Zechariah 5 seems to indicate that the unclean harlot of the last days will migrate back to Babylon - very possibly from Rome, now the ecumenical and interfaith capital of the world. Interestingly, in Revelation 18:2 the Angel cries:

Babylon the great is fallen, is fallen, and is become the habitation of devils, and the hold of every foul spirit, and a cage of every unclean and hateful bird.

The repetition of is fallen, is fallen indicates that the matter is settled and already decided - the judgment is final. Yet could the more subtle implication be that two cities are involved here, Rome and Babylon? (I know I'm repeating myself here from previous posts, but stay with me.)

Now to the information I just stumbled upon. Okay, evidently the region in between the Tigris and Euphrates in southern Iraq is largely marshland. Interesting. But then I just found this article from globalsecurity.org stating:

The alluvial plain region begins north of Baghdad and extends to the Persian Gulf. Described as a delta plain interlaced with irrigation canals and intermittent lakes, for years this region was subject to flooding by the Tigris and Euphrates rivers. From the late 1960s to the mid70s, government efforts were increasingly devoted to flood control. In southern Iraq, an area (15,600 square kilometers) from Al Qurnah and extending east of the Tigris beyond the Iranian border is predominantly marsh land.

So, this land in southern Iraq is already marshy and pre-disposed to flooding. This is where things get really interesting. According to Chuck Missler, Alexander the Great planned to make Babylon into a port city before he died in 323BC! Remember, it was Alexander the Great who famously built the Isthmus of Tyre (oddly enough, see Ezekiel 28), which "converted the island into a peninsula."

I am reminded of the 2004 Tsunami in which parts of entire Islands were submerged under water (see before and after photos). I also think of New Orleans, below sea level, which took weeks to drain after Katrina. Revelation 6:14 says: And the heaven departed as a scroll when it is rolled together; and every mountain and island were moved out of their places.

So what am I getting at? Could it be that somehow literal Babylon could become a port city, either through earthquakes, intentional flooding, or a combination of the two? Some prophecy teachers (I won't name names) get upset at this idea because they think this means the end is a long way off (because it would take years to do this type of building).

Not necessarily! Look how quickly cities in the Arab Gulf States have been constructed! Also, Satan is going to bring his A-game, all of his supernatural power, all of his technological insight, etc. He will finish what Nimrod and Alexander the Great started. Perhaps the rapidity and the technological genius will be part of what causes the world to marvel.

Furthermore, God will dry up the Euphrates to allow the Kings of the East to cross over on their march to Israel (Revelation 16:12). Did not the Persians of Daniel's day divert the water to overtake the mighty Babylon without a fight (Daniel 5)? Perhaps this time it will be God who diverts the water just prior to the fall of Mystery Babylon! After that, Revelation 18:21 hints that a flood will be a part of Babylon's final judgment:

And a mighty angel took up a stone like a great millstone, and cast it into the sea, saying, Thus with violence shall that great city Babylon be thrown down, and shall be found no more at all.

God says, you want water? I'll give you water! Now, have I gone off the deep end (pun intended), or does this all actually make a lot of sense?!

It does make sense and is interesting. Mystery Babylon is more than one place l think and more than one port. Here it's making reference to the mail one l think.

They must be loaded ships or ships waiting to load but can't come close in...they don't no where to go but just look on blink.gif We were just talking about the Isthmus of Tyre (the mole) in another string.

I'm glad you've taken up the study Days.Of.Noah

I know I'm just a babe... but I'm really curious as to why it is referred to as "mystery babylon". In the scriptures there is a comma ...

MYSTERY,
BABYLON THE GREAT,
THE MOTHER OF HARLOTS
AND ABOMINATIONS OF THE EARTH.

Revelation 17:5 And upon her forehead was a name written, MYSTERY, BABYLON THE GREAT, THE MOTHER OF HARLOTS AND ABOMINATIONS OF THE EARTH.

couple other thoughts...

Rev 17:2 With whom the kings of the earth have committed fornication, and the inhabitants of the earth have been made drunk with the wine of her fornication.

Who was it that said "Religion is the opiate of the people" ?
----

Rev 18:4 And I heard another voice from heaven, saying, Come out of her, my people, that ye be not partakers of her sins, and that ye receive not of her plagues.

I think of Lot... Gen 18,19 - and that judgment couldn't happen until they got Lot out of there... (and not to forget that Isa 13:19 and Jer 50:40 mention Sodom's judgment...
----

Rev 18:7 How much she hath glorified herself, and lived deliciously, so much torment and sorrow give her: for she saith in her heart, I sit a queen, and am no widow, and shall see no sorrow.

contrast that the widowhood of Israel ... from Jehovah...

and I think about Naomi... and Elimelech
----

Then between 9 and 19 ... it seems to be 3 groups that lament for this queen of wickedness
vs 9 - the kings of the earth
vs 11 - the merchants of the earth
vs 17 - the shipmasters (traders by sea)
----

Gen 10:6 And the sons of Ham; Cush, and Mizraim, and Phut, and Canaan.
7And the sons of Cush; Seba, and Havilah, and Sabtah, and Raamah, and Sabtechah: and the sons of Raamah; Sheba, and Dedan.
8And Cush begat Nimrod: he began to be a mighty one in the earth.
9He was a mighty hunter before the LORD: wherefore it is said, Even as Nimrod the mighty hunter before the LORD. (a defiant mighty hunter... I wonder what he hunted...)
10And the beginning of his kingdom was Babel, and Erech, and Accad, and Calneh, in the land of Shinar.

Gen 11:1 And the whole earth was of one language, and of one speech.
2 And it came to pass, as they journeyed from the east, that they found a plain in the land of Shinar; and they dwelt there.
3 And they said one to another, Go to, let us make brick, and burn them thoroughly. And they had brick for stone, and slime had they for morter.
4 And they said, Go to, let us build us a city and a tower, whose top may reach unto heaven; and let us make us a name, lest we be scattered abroad upon the face of the whole earth.
5 And the LORD came down to see the city and the tower, which the children of men builded.
6 And the LORD said, Behold, the people is one, and they have all one language; and this they begin to do: and now nothing will be restrained from them, which they have imagined to do.
7 Go to, let us go down, and there confound their language, that they may not understand one another's speech.
8 So the LORD scattered them abroad from thence upon the face of all the earth: and they left off to build the city.
9 Therefore is the name of it called Babel; because the LORD did there confound the language of all the earth: and from thence did the LORD scatter them abroad upon the face of all the earth.

and then onto Zech 5:5 Then the angel that talked with me went forth, and said unto me, Lift up now thine eyes, and see what is this that goeth forth.
6 And I said, What is it? And he said, This is an ephah that goeth forth. He said moreover, This is their resemblance through all the earth.
7 And, behold, there was lifted up a talent of lead: and this is a woman that sitteth in the midst of the ephah.
8 And he said, This is wickedness. And he cast it into the midst of the ephah; and he cast the weight of lead upon the mouth thereof.
9 Then lifted I up mine eyes, and looked, and, behold, there came out two women, and the wind was in their wings; for they had wings like the wings of a stork: and they lifted up the ephah between the earth and the heaven.
10 Then said I to the angel that talked with me, Whither do these bear the ephah?
11 And he said unto me, To build it an house in the land of Shinar: and it shall be established, and set there upon her own base.

Isa 13:1 burden of Babylon
vs 6 day of the LORD
vs 19 And Babylon, the glory of kingdoms, the beauty of the Chaldees' excellency, shall be as when God overthrew Sodom and Gomorrah.

Jer 50 :1 the LORD spake against Babylon and against the land of the Chaldeans
vs 13 wrath of the LORD
vs 15 vengeance of the LORD
vs 40 As God overthrew Sodom and Gomorrah and the neighbour cities thereof, saith the LORD; so shall no man abide there, neither shall any son of man dwell therein.

I'm not going to be explicit in drawing conclusions... it's just a veiw...
