I am ever so curious as to people's thoughts of such. I used to never miss an episode of John Edward, when he was doing Crossing Over. Now, He does John Edward Cross Country, and dh is just astounded by it, and thinks John edward has this gift. Also, I have noticed that Montel has Sylvia Browne on constantly. (I never normally watch such carp as Montel, but have been lately, just to see how often it occurs...and it is a few times a week, at least.)

I try to tell me dh that these people are allowing themselves to be used by demonic spirits. He doesn't understand why I think that way, even though I tell him that even evil knows the truth. I personally feel that to a VERY small degree, a "medium" can draw some closer to G-d, but that that degree is far too small to even remotely consider safe, and it is best to stay away from that world all together. Anyhow, I was just curious what others thought.

you will notice..
and you do notice....

these are "mediums".

spirit mediums.

but these are not spirits of the deceased that they bring up.

they are impostors.

their desire it to fool, and to impersonate, to lie, that they are "someone else".

this is the work of the devil,.....the original serpent.....he took the 'form' of a snake..the most cautious of all creatures.

the purpose is to carry on the original lie. to make up, another lie, to cover the original lie....

YOU SURELY WILL NOT DIE.

it is the same reason that the "woman that brought her masters much gain".....and their source of "gain" was lost....when the demon, (the impersonator) was cast out of her..... that her masters became incensced at the apostles.....and had them turned over to the "authorities"....because they realized that their .source. of gain had been cast out.....the woman was useless to them any longer, as a means of gain....

the demon, was cast out.

yes.....the demons know what is true....

and their purpose?

to mislead.

be watchful, and do not be deceived.

John Edward just said that my dead Great Grandfather liked to eat cheese.
I couldn't dispute that, because I was born after he died.

(EDIT: The above statment is drawing on an example that could have happened. It was a joke. I will never know if my Great Grandfather liked to eat cheese and I will go to my grave never having known.)

I never had a good feeling about either of these two.

Check this out and show it to your husband as well. This is called a con game. You play it with the most vulnerable of people, whether they have lost a close friend or family member. It's easy to take advantage of. You feel out the person until you hit upon something and run with it.
It's the psychic friends network, with a bit more "talent".

The difference here is that these two have outlets with montel williams and Edward with his own show, as opposed to calling Sheila the imbecile over the phone for $10.00 a minute who will read your future.

Just some examples below (browne predictions in quotes, Hudson's answers below.)
Sylvia Browne: Failed Prophet in 1998
By Brian Hudson

This comments on any and all prophesies made by Browne concerning the year 1998. Originally, my only source for these predictions are indirect sources. Browne has removed all links to these predictions from her own site; I have since been directed to this page at sylvia.org, and the wording below has been quoted from there.

Brian Hudson's "Sylvia Browne: False Prophet?" website

The Predictions of 1998

"The media overhypes El Niño. It will not cause as much havoc as predicted by weather watchers. There will be flooding in the Midwest and Southern states, the other states will find it unusually dry and humid."

UNDETERMINED

"The warming trend continues along with higher humidity, causing molds to grow, making allergies rise to an all-time-high."

UNDETERMINED This isn't the first time Browne has made vague predictions about climactic trends that either a) cannot be measured in a single year or cool.gif are a given even before the year begins. But she doesn make a definite statement here--about molds and record-high allergies.

"The landmass of the North East Coast will exhibit obvious erosion. The West Coast will find that more land is appearing."

INDETERMINABLE Landmasses are always experiencing cycles of erosion and volcanic upheaval. About the only limb Browne goes out on here is with the word "obvious," but that still doesn't turn this into a psychic prediction.

"The Pacific Northwest, near Seattle, will have an earthquake, around 5.4, in January."

FALSE: No 5.4 earthquake occurred in or near Seattle in January.According to the The Pacific Northwest Seismograph Network , no notable earthquakes rocked the Pacific Northwest at all in the first months of 1998.

"Small earthquakes in central California, near Modesto, in February."

TRUE, but inconsequential. California is an area of great seismic activity. It is absolutely common for an organization like the SCEDC to record upwards of a thousand "small" seismic events in a month. This isn't a prediction; this is a given.

"A very large earthquake in Madrid, about 7.8, in May."

FALSE: No such quake occurred. A simple search of CNN.com, Yahoo! News, and Google was all that was needed to falsify this prediction.

"Volcanic eruption in Japan causes a poisonous cloud mass, around April."

FALSE: No major eruptions, and no poisonous cloud, menaced Japan around April 1998.
"The non-stop destruction of the rain forests will release more and more harmful diseases into our atmosphere. The Earth is trying to survive the plague called man."

FALSE: The statement is not scientifically tenable. I have yet to find any study linking rainforest destruction with the emergence of harmful diseases. This is a pseudoscientific statement with, so far as I can tell, little real-world bearing.

"The world will not come to an end in '98, '99, or 2000. As Jesus told us - no one can predict the end times. Ignore the "doomsday prophets" who will rise up like weeds in the next few years. Besides, the "end of the world" simply means we all go back home, we are reunited with all of our loved ones, and we get to have a great time with God and each other forever. What's so bad about that? But having said that, I really cannot see anything beyond the year 2100."

INDETERMINABLE She was right about one thing, at least--the world didn't end in 1998, 1999, and 2000. As for the rest of this "prediction," which reads more like a Chicken Soup for the Soul book, there's really no way to verify it. Interestingly, Browne's vision has since cleared, and she has made predictions for the next 100 years.

"Microsoft gets fined more and more money due to monopolistic practices."

FALSE: It was not until 2000 that Microsoft began facing major charges and fines for its monopolistic practices..

"The US re-takes the lead in technology and becomes the world leader for product innovation."

UNDETERMINED

"IBM creates a surprisingly good talk-savvy computer."

FALSE: IBM did not design such a system in 1998. "Talk-savvy" computers are still rough, experimental machines, and IBM has never been at the forefront of voice-recognition technology.

"Bill Clinton will be exonerated in the Paula Jones case. It will be uncovered that this was more like a conspiracy to corrupt his reputation."

FALSE: Clinton was never exonerated. As CSICOP notes, "Jones got a big settlement, and it was Clinton's deposition in the Jones case that let to the impeachment effort" in 1998.

"The IRS gets a more thorough investigation by the Justice Department. This becomes the first step toward a Flat Tax code."

FALSE: No such investigation ever began, nor has any such investigation ever led to a flat tax code. This seems to be one of those political sticking points for Browne. She "predicted" a push towards a flat tax for 2000, too, but the issue never comes to fruition.

"More Militia groups, in North Dakota and Wyoming, come forward around June with grievances and form "stand offs" with the government."

FALSE: No such groups initiated stand-offs with the government in or around June 1998.
A search of several major news sources, both national and local/state, failed to turn up any incidences of militia stand-offs. Particularly in the wake of Ruby Ridge and Waco, such stand-offs would have made the news had they occurred.

"The Democrats will gain power again. Bill Clinton will again run for national office after a four-year break, and win."

FALSE: The Dems did not gain power again in 1998.

"Hormonal therapy will be refined to create a new type of youth rejuvenator."

FALSE: No such techniques were refined in 1998. It's 2003, and we still do not have such procedures.

"The "triple cocktail" used to treat AIDS will have a fourth ingredient added to put AIDS in full remission."

FALSE: No such treatment was developed in 1998. It's 2003, and we still have no cure for AIDS.

"The Spiritual Movement, dormant for seven thousand years, comes to the foreground again."

FALSE: No group with the formal name "The Spiritual Movement" emerged in 1998.
I have yet to even verify the existence of such a group, even in the "background."

"We will begin to see more TV programming and other media showing a renewed Spirituality rather than religious dogma."

FALSE: No such resurgence began in 1998. A survey of current and recent television fare reveals that a number of shows of the past few years--Touched by an Angel, 7th Heaven, Promised Land--actually rely on religious dogma for their central themes, while very few shows, with the possible exception of Crossing Over with John Edward, draw on notions of "Spirituality."

"Our economy is better than it has been in the last 40 years and keeps getting better."

TRUE: The economy did indeed improve in 1998, as tech stocks enjoyed their heyday.
Unimpressive, as cycles of economic prosperity and decline are so common that economists predict them all the time.

Accuracy rating so far: 2 out of 35, or about 6%.

Accuracy rating, verified*: 2 out of 17, or about 12%.

* "Verified" indicates a count of predictions which have verifiably been determined TRUE or FALSE. Predictions marked UNDETERMINED or INDETERMINABLE do not count for this calculation.

Here's an article by Sherri Waxman on John Edward:

More on John Edward
By Shari Waxman

John Edward, host of the television series "Crossing Over," is just short of creating an empire of Oprah or Martha Stewart proportions. His show, a half-hour exhibition of his self-professed ability to communicate with the dead and predict the future, now airs on CBS and Sci-Fi at least 10 times a week. Author of three books (his second, "One Last Time," was a New York Times bestseller), subject of an HBO documentary, guest of "Larry King Live" and "The Crier Report," and celebrated counselor to a host of B-list celebrities (Jennifer Beals, Anne Rice, et al.), Edward has gained surprising credibility.
He has managed to sell his talents via audiotapes ("Developing Your Own Psychic Powers," yours for $59.95), a quarterly newsletter, internationally touring seminars (sold out), private readings (the wait list is now three years) and personally endorsed products like the John Edward Pink Rose Appreciation Pin, "a symbol to express love."

But Edward, a 32-year-old native of Long Island, has not fessed up to all of his talents. As it happens, he is more than a psychic medium; he is also a master statistician. The smoke and mirrors behind his self-professed ability to communicate with the dead is a simple application of the laws of probability. Basically, if you keep trying something whose results are independent, your odds of getting your desired result increase.
For example, the odds that you will roll a 3 on any one roll of a six-sided die are 1 in 6, about 17 percent. After six throws, the chance that you will have thrown at least one 3 has increased to about 67 percent. After 12 throws, it's nearly 90 percent.

Lucky for Edward, most audience members on his television show are too hopeful and trusting to pull out a calculator and expose the charlatan behind the prophet.
The temptation to believe that Edward, a self-professed medium, can connect with the deceased and foretell future events is great, especially for those who are vulnerable and in need of comforting. Many members of the show's audience, hoping to connect with deceased loved ones via Edward, are mourning recent losses. They come with the expectation, no doubt, that being "read" by Edward on national television will yield healing revelations from those who have "crossed over." Inevitably he reports that the dead are at peace, happily and lovingly watching over those left behind on Earth.
Since Edward is playing a numbers game, there are, of course, rules to follow. "Crossing Over" audience members are coached even before they enter the television studio on how to behave during taping. The rules for being in the audience are stated on the show's Web site and begin with the following:

"Have no expectations. You may REALLY want to connect with one specific relative ... but there is a good chance they may not come through. Keep your mind open and welcome whoever comes through during the reading. We don't want you to be disappointed or broken-hearted if your chosen loved one doesn't come through. As John says, 'Please do not put earthly expectations on a heavenly experience.'"
So each audience member becomes, in effect, a throw of the die, and each of Edward's guesses is the number he's trying to roll. Symbolically translated, where P = probability: P(Aunt Mary comes through) + P(Grandma's first poodle comes through) + P(Jen's ex-brother-in-law comes through) + P(a person who will eventually die comes through prematurely) + P(an unknown ancestor comes through) + P(Edward can talk himself out of anything) = Damn close to 100 percent.

Seems fair enough. But apparently still too risky for Edward. The rules on the Web site continue:

"Validation is important! Since John does not know your friends and relatives, it is very important you give feedback. A simple nod of the head, a yes or no answer goes a long way in a reading. Please don't give more information than John asks for."
Translation: John will throw out guesses until you indicate he has hit on something, and then he'll run with it. Should his ramblings contradict your reality, do not correct him.
Even more precious is his allowance for any and all errors, which he disguises as a modest admission of mortality in his book "Crossing Over: The Stories Behind the Stories." Edward writes, "I'm always saying that it is not the spirits who are getting it wrong; it's more likely that I am misinterpreting their messages." You have to trust a guy so willing to admit his own failings.

In his book, Edward offers an example of his powers that is so dubious I thought he was joking. As it goes, once he told a "sitter" (the person being read) that someone in her life was doing something with wallpaper; it was odd, Edward recalls, that it had no meaning for her that day. Until, lo and behold, a few months later, the sitter's sister-in-law changed the border in her bathroom! Add up the probabilities of the hundreds of independent events involving wallpaper and the sitter's friends and family over the course of months and the realization of his prophecy is nearly inevitable. The art of intelligence insulting has rarely known such mastery.

Adding to the speciousness of the whole operation is that the wallpaper example was handpicked for inclusion in the book; consider how many failed readings were excluded. The careful plucking of successes from a mass of attempts is a technique used in Edward's television show as well. The creation of each half-hour episode requires six hours of taping. Do the math.

Yet it works. I prefer to believe Edward's fans are not unintelligent, but simply in need of something to believe in, to feel good about, or to relieve the anxiety of what cannot be controlled. If he is fulfilling these needs, then in some ways, his gig is legit. Just like playing the lottery, if you really want to believe, you are better off not knowing the odds.

Good article I thought.

It's a long read, but it explains a great deal. Not surprising really.

huh.gif ohmy.gif what these people do is an abomination to the LORD.
I used to watch them too when I was unsaved, but now I shun them.
They can use the name of God as much as they want to draw another kind of audience to them but they still are doing an abomination to the eyes of the LORD, in the sense that they misled people. They will give you just enough truth to lure them to their abominable practice, until they have you DECEIVED. (i.e. "doctrines of demons").

Caution is my advice. I remember king Saul who lost the anointing after having consulted the witch of Endor...

I used to call these poeple all the time and rarely did I get an accurate picture; one thing was sure: they did get my money!!! ohmy.gif mad.gif

Thank you everyone for your replies. I know full well the dangers of believing in the smoke and mirrors this is, and what it invites into your life. I actually used to be heavily into mystic entertainments, such as tarot, and I cannot believe I am going to admit this, but also runes. For those who know little about runes, in order to make the runes yours, it is recommended that you put a drop of your own blood on each rune, and allow it to dry. I had clay runes, to ensure they would absorb my blood. Yeah, I was that far out there. Anyhow, I have tried time and again to convince dh that mediums are exactly what senteami stated:

He continues to believe John Edward is gifted. Good loooking, I'll grant, but gifted? No. Don't misunderstand...dh's certainly not "into" that world, in the least. However, I do feel he is "ripe for the picking" as he professes to not believe in G-d. Says he sees no evidence for Him. Which, frankly, astounds me, given our wee one. I've told him numerous times that the like of John Edward, Sylvia Browne, etc, are in real trouble, spiritually, and will have a great deal to account for, and just why.

At any rate, I was just curious as to others' thoughts.

EDIT:Not one of my better jokes out. tongue.gif

.....I got a pack o tarot cards as a teenager and they really didn't do much for me as far as holding my interest. I did get a "spell" book once and being an avid reader from a young age, read up on many things, including Astral Projection, Numerology and things of that nature. Best to stay away from ALL of that kind of stuff.

An interesting fact I found at Sylia's website is that she is the founder of a 'church'... they actually hold services. On her site she states they do NOT believe Jesus was anything more than a 'good man'. It is stated also they believe Jesus WAS married to Mary Magdalene, according to the DiVinci Code.

Hmmm... I see an evil ' plot'... dry.gif

In the West, we underestimate the power of evil. I guess we are too "intelligent" to believe in all that mumbo jumbo. Pooey. It is REAL and it is TERRIFING. I have a student that messed around with the spirits and now is plagued with demonic activity (yeah, I've told him to confess Christ). I personally wouldn't even take a yoga class... clearing your mind and using breathing to meditate is walking a thin line. Anyone from the East that is born again would recognize yoga as New Age inspired.

My pastor friend knows someone that will not give up the power demon spirits give her. According to her, the spirits even her aquaitence's HOUSE. John Edwards and Ms. Brown probably have the same problem. Even if they have some inkling as to the error of their ways, they probably won't give up the false power they feel they have.

People that have prophetic gifts are particularly vulnerable to the whole witchcraft thing. When I first was saved, satan TRIED his best to corrupt my giftings. I was invited to a Sylvia Brown conference, and two of my co-workers actually told me to go and see a psychic they both saw on a regular basis. I was extremely temped, and even made an appointment with this psychic (like I said, I was a REAL BABY CHRISTIAN) out of sure curiosity. Well, about an hour before the appointment the Holy Spirit (at the time, I probably didn't recognize it at such) prodded and poked me into canceling. WHEW. Who knows what kind of door I could have opened if I would have gone.

AGAIN... IF YOU ARE PROPHETICALLY GIFTED, YOU ARE PARTICULARLY SUSCEPTABLE TO WITCHCRAFT BECAUSE IT IS SIMPLY A SECULARIZED PERVERSION OF A GOD GIVEN GIFT.

I don't think that there is any kind of dispute about any of this stuff being dangerous, but there are also times when these people play a con game with people and their lives. If you're good at being hustler, you know how to work the system so to speak. Since most of these hustler's don't believe in Jesus anyway, is my guess, they don't consider what they're doing to be dangerous, perhaps until it is too late.

My mother really enjoys watching Sylvia on Montel. Mom always asks me if I have caught the latest show. Over the years I have learned to say that it is always the same old thing... Sylvia tells everyone asking about their dead loved ones that they are happy on the other side and of course they forgive you. I also bring up Sylvia's most obvious blunder (after which she never has made specific predictions again)... she said Al Gore would become the next president. He of course didn't and GW Bush did. Her reply was "Who knew there was such a thing as the electoral college? I didn't know that." I had to laugh at that one.

I think that any time one of us is involved with a cult... that we need to realize that there is something about us... that makes us very susceptable to (for a better word) lies. I have personally found it necessary to keep a very close watch on what others tell me. I don't know how else to put it.

Well, yes. If you have the discernment of a gnat you can realize that there is something not right about them. I mean Sylvia looks and talks like she's dieing. Someone filled with the Holy Ghost has a glow or something. She has a darkness to her. I'm sure John will be right there with her if the Lord tarries long enough for him to reach old age.
Their punishment will be most severe.

Is that sarcasm I hear j. wink.gif Shock, utter shock.

Actually I was saying there was no disputing this, because you seemed to imply that some take it lightly when you said, "In the West, we underestimate the power of evil. I guess we are too "intelligent" to believe in all that mumbo jumbo. "

What I was saying was that nobody is disputing this fact, not saying off the top of my head that it might be dangerous, and we in the west have just figured this out. Obviously.
