Full Version: Preparation Information
Christian-Forum.net > General discussion > What do you say?
Roxygal
I've been searching for a place that could give me some information on preparing for a disaster and such. Now I do know that the Lord will provide for us... it is true... BUT...

I think it would be foolish not to prepare yourselves for a hurricane or just to gain some knowledge about these things. I do think it's our responsibility to think wisely about such things. Gosh, even a bad thunderstorm could kill the electricity for a week or two... what then?

I know you it may seem like I'm pounding this over and over again, but I can't ignore what the Lord is telling me any more than any of you could. So please, just consider this....

Thanks!!

Love you all!!!
Lisa

Lisa, I feel your heart.
I want to tell you, if you hear that a hurricane is coming your way.
Get out and come to my place, I will let you stay for as long as
you need. That goes for others too.

I have family that live in Virginia and Arizona, and I may
have them come too. biggrin.gif

RosielovesJesus
If a hurricane would be headed that they think could be as bad
as Katrina and Rita, I surely wouldn't stay, but flee to safety.

God bless you.
I pray we all stay safe

Lisa,
I just caught this a few weeks back on t.v.
The new Jim Bakker show, they were talking
about having a bag prepared for each person
in the house. Their children were preparing
a bag for themselves.

They had a flashlight in it that you just wind up
and you have light for 30 minutes. No batteries needed.
Food, bottled water, candles, matches, hand can opener.
Some clothing. I forget what they all had in it.

They do have a website I believe. I think it is Jim Bakker
ministries.com. Something like that. I know lots of people have not forgiven Jim Bakker for what he has done
in the past, but he has asked for forgiveness, so I have.

I have liked a lot of their shows. They talk about what is coming
on the earth, end time stuff a lot.

They think it is good for each person to have a bag ready, so they
can flee in a hurry. Because they don't know where they will end up.
But they will have some supplies with them.

God bless,

Hey Rosie and Lisa, You both have such a sweet and giving heart. Thankyou for that info. I too use to watch Jim Bakker. I haven't seen his new show. Personally it is a good idea to have a plan incase of an emergency. The Lord shows us in the Bible that HE warns us to be prepared through Joseph and the Pharoahs dream. I will have to get one of those wind up flashlights. I have a wind up radio and it is so nice. No batteries. Now I need to go an checkout those sites. thanks

Thanks Rosie...you're so sweet! With gas prices, though, I probably will have to commandeer a horse or two!!! laugh.gif Giddy up!

We haven't had a "big" hurricane here in a long time, but we get walloped every now and then with nor'easters. There is only one way out of here because we're pretty much surrounded by water... so some may not get out unfortunately if it comes unexpectedly.

I worry about terrorist attacks here because of all of the military bases. We've been targeted in the past... so, if having a bugoutbag makes me feel a little more secure, well then... wink.gif

I don't hold any grudges, that's for sure.... Jim Baker asked for forgiveness? Well, who am I not to give it to him, right?

What part of VA does your family live in?

Love you too!!!

They live in Fredericksburg Virginia.
I have visited them many times.
I love the area.

They all came out here when my mother passed on.
I love them dearly.

My other relatives are in Arizona.
I haven't been out to see them yet.
But I am planning on it, Lord willing.

Girl you just keep sounding the alarm! If the Lord is prompting you then keep telling the masses. Lisa the Lord has given you such a sweet and loving spirit. I see the reflection of the Lord in your life. Your life impacts those who come in contact with you, so keep warning, the people are listening.

Thanks Rosie... you are just so very sweet!!
If you ever come down to Va to visit your family, please let me know.
Fredericksburg is only 2 1/2 hour drive from here.

I love Fredericksburg. It's really a beautiful town. My husband and I spent a weekend up there... (pre-kid days) and we visited a winery. It was real nice.
So, if you do ever get a chance... please let me know! I'd love to get a chance to hang out and listen to you sing!!!

Love you!!

Oh for sure I would love to meet you.
Thank you so much for the offer.
It is a 12 hour drive to Fredericksburg,
from my place.

Next time I am going, I will let you know.
These gas prices are horrible, so I don't know if
I am going to go now. I was thinking of taking
my dad this time, he hasn't been in awhile.
He is so lonely without my mother.

I usually stay with my cousin and my
dad would stay with my aunt and uncle.
If we go, I could leave everyone there and
drive up and see you. Maybe we will do this
sometime.

Anyway that is very sweet of you.
Love,

Some things that I discovered to be good to include in a kit:

1) Minimum 3 days of food and water (try to include foods that don't require heat to eat and ones with minimal sodium to helpn with conserving water) per person and hard candies for energy
2) Wind-up radio and flashlight...also according to personal inclination, lightsticks and/ or candles
3) Small First Aid Kit, needed medications, extra pair of glasses, hand sanitizer
4) Extra change of clothes to go with the season/climate (1 for summer and 1 for winter), 2-3 pair extra socks/ underwear, emergency poncho each
5) Emergency blankets and whistle per family member, disposable cell phone with time on it
6) Important documents, a compass and a small travel atlas
7) Aqua-pur tablets (in case you need to purify water), Swiss Army knife, waterproof matches or regular matches in a plastic container (like a pill bottle), a compact mirror, a pup tent, cord
8) Toilet tissue, disposable wipes, small trowel, a roll of trash bags, a small toothpaste kit (like the ones offered when traveling), underarm deodorant
9) For babies/young children include diapers, wipes and diper rash cream
10) For all children, a favorite toy like a teddy bear, ect
11) And as mentioned in the above title, A BIBLE!!!!

Hope this might help a bit...

All love in Him!!!!

PS. As someone else mentioned, money is a good idea too so whatever you can put aside would be a good thing...just realize that if anything were to happen in the financial world, that this could affect whatever cash you have on you. But remember that as much as we might try to prepare (just in case), that we need to be careful not to put faith in our own efforts or preparations but in our Lord who knows everything that's coming down the pike and loves each of us beyond words...and when HE'S taking care of us, we can rest in the knowledge that He won't EVER drop the ball. I've learned from experience that He can be counted on to be there for us...just as He was for the Israelites and for Elijah. So we don't have to fear...just act as He leads us to and trust Him to see us through whatever comes.

Most of all, cover everything in prayer!!!! Not only re doing such preparations but re what is to come and how we conduct ourselves through it...how He can use us as believers to share with those around us about Him...things are about to hit...you can almost feel it in the air...let's get our focus off the little things that try to tear us apart and on our Lord Jesus Christ...In Children's Church today, the Lord laid a message on my heart to shre with them based on Phil 4:13..and I believe it needs to be remembered by us all..." For I can do everything God asks me to with the help of Christ who gives me the strength and power." (Living NT) Whatever comes...whatever we have to face, THIS IS OUR ONLY HOPE....JESUS CHRIST!

As for me, since my resources are very limited (I don't have a car, nor a bank account, and never had any credit card) all I am left with is to just trust the LORD. Maybe He wants it that way. If I let myself getting bogged down with this, I could never wake up in the morning. tongue.gif

End-Time Calling
Roxy, wonderful call to attention. It is indeed almost time to use those packs yall speak of. Roxy you are right in continuing to announce the coming persecution. The world could literally change in a matter of minutes. All it takes is one bomb, one earthquake, one nuke, it doesn't matter. Everything we've known our whole lives could dissapear into a new and frighening world. So it is definately time to prepare and turn our ears to the voice of The Most High. Amen Roxy

Senteami3 don't worry about those current conditions. Father knows exactly what we need. I feel sometimes that father doesn't want me to have much success in this life financially, job, or riches wise. Perhaps to keep me humble and focused on him. I know it is difficult to stay focused on him when We seem to have all we need at the time. BUt if we don't have what this world requires it seems we always look to father for these answers. I have a feeling Father keeps certain people in certain positions for his purposes not ours. You keep on keepin on. I feel ya. Those whom are last WILL BE FIRST.

Lisa thank you so much for encouraging us to look into preparing. Even the Red Cross wants people to have an 72 hour emergency kit together, one for each person. And don't forget your pets.

There is a website that I looked into years ago which has a list, it's a little bit more than the Red Crosses list, but, it's just commone sense things. The Red Cross also has a book out that is very helpful, it gives alot more information if there is an emergency. While most say to have enough supplies to last you at least 3 days, from what we have seen, like Hurricane Katrina, it's a good idea to have one to two weeks supplies. As we all saw from the TV most of the help did not come for almost a week to two weeks. If the damage in the area is so sever it can ruin the water supply and power can be down for a long time. The idea for a emergency kit, it to help you survive the worst part until help comes. In all reality if the disaster hits a wide area, help will be hard, and your on your own for a while. For some they couldn't even leave their homes for days. While we hope that the community will come together and help each other, and eventually they do, in the beginning your on your own. I have had an emergency kit for a while, and it has come in handy several times. Everything from a major hurricane, to just the power being out for the day. Some would say my kit is a bit much, but when the storm came, guess who had the things to make life a little easier for the others. I was quite comfortable, and was not stressed at all. And I was able help others who had not prepared. I've learned you can live anywhere, and an emergency can happen any time and anywhere. I've even got a small kit in my car. Oh, before I forget the other website is www.beprepared.com The Govenment also has websites like FEMA which can give you a list, but I find that it's missing some basic info.

I guess you could say, there is a difference between survival, and being as comfortable as you can.

For those on a limited income, don't feel overwhelmed getting started, just start off small. Everytime you go shopping and there is a sale on something, say like, tuna fish, pick up a can. Walmart sometimes has a good deals on camping things. Some of the little things are only a dollar or two. Get your list first, then do what you can. Yard sales are great for some of the bigger things.

As you pray and talk to God about all this, ask for the peace, so that your not freaking out about all this, and worse not doing anything at all, because your afraid. But pray, that He will provide and that He will show you what to buy, and it's ok to ask Him to show you where the sales are. smile.gif lol, (don't laugh, it's true). smile.gif

Hope this helps
God bless

Hey Lisa, it's funny you mentioning Fredericksberg, I use to live there in the early 90's, out in Stafford. My son has lived there for years, then move out to Ohio last year, but my daughter in law is from there too. Man, it's a small world!

Thanks for the info Sandra! Wow, Stafford's not too far from where I live. It is a small world!!

I'm really happy to know that a lot of people are preparing... even if it's just a little bit. The Lord has weighed this so heavy on my heart. I can't stress it enough that things are going to dramatically change soon. There is no need to freak out and be scared... hand that over to the Lord... but we do need to be wise in all this.

Love to you all!!!

Thanks Stormdreamer.
That was very informative.
My husband and I talked about this yesterday.
To pick up canned this and that. Food that will keep.
He told me to recycle it so to speak. if a year goes by
and you have used it, because some things to have
an expiry date, and we eat it, they I make sure
I replace those food items as soon as I go shopping.

I really don't have any fear. I do leave it in God's hands.
But I do not see anything wrong with having supplies.
We could help others out with all of that too.

We have an elderly couple that live on a farm close to us.
He is 95 and his wife is in her 80's. It would be nice to
have extra things for them, plus anyone else that could use
help.

I think it is a good idea to have huge jugs of water on hand.
I have been picking one up almost every time I go.

I just feel led to do so.

Anyway, thanks for all the tips everyone.
This is a thread we should keep going.
Anyone else have any ideas.

I like the idea of the wind up radio That way we know what is going on.
Don't know if that is a good thing or not. ohmy.gif

It's amazing how many people are feeling God's promptings about preparing. I'm so glad we are able to talk about these things to each other, and we don't have to feel like we're "crazy" about thinking about these things. There's an old saying that was drilled into my head many years ago, it was "PREPARE FOR THE WORSE AND HOPE FOR THE BEST." It's not fatalistic, it's just plan good common sense.

God bless you Lisa!

Thanks Lisa, your so sweet. You have such a big heart!

I guess if I have any pray needs it is that I need a place of my own. While the Lord has a temporary place for me to live, I really would like a home of my own. But the Lord seems to have something else in mind, because everytime I have tried it has not worked out. Up until moving here I have always had my own place. I don't want to be a burden on my family, and I help out as much as I can. But I sure do like my own place. I like the alone time with God. I know the Lord has me here for a reason, I just haven't figured it out yet. It's like I'm in limbo, and God's not letting me go. So I guess I just need the peace and stronger faith to just trust that I'm where He wants me to be. I've has hard times before, but I always could see what the Lord was doing and I had peace where I was. But this, this is different. It's hard to stay put, and wait on God when your circumstanses are screaming at you to do something.

Hey, becarefull when you ask, right.smile.gif

Thanks for asking, you are all such wonderfully caring people. I feel so blessed to be able to talk you all.

It's hard to be patient... I know that from experience! I will certainly pray for you and your situation. Sometimes the only time I get to be alone with the Lord is in the shower...even then I sometimes get interupted by the little monkeys!!! The middle of the night works for me too. When my husband isn't working out of town I'll slip outside in the middle of the night to breathe in the fresh air and talk to the Lord. I love the sounds of the night... so peaceful. Last night while I was out there I swear the crickets were harmonizing! It was a beautiful song that lifted right up to heaven!! Not sure if they're actually crickets... maybe secadas (sp?) It really was magnificent!

It's in those times where you really can't see where the Lord is taking you that He's really working on you big time... at least that's what I've experienced. That's when you have to just let go of everything... fear, anger, resentment, anxiety etc... and put yourself in His total control.

If you ever need anything at all... please don't hesitate to ask. I'll keep you in my prayers.

Many Blessings!

At least you have a computer senteami3. biggrin.gif

God is speaking so loud and clear on this forum. AMEN!

This same subject was on my heart all weekend. I just want to share what's in my bag, in case anything important was missed.

On my person, I always carry a mini-survival kit, it fits in an altoids box, it includes:

A small swiss army type knife
A cigarette lighter (don't forget this one, have you ever tried rubbing sticks together?)
2 plastic grocery bags folded up small with rubber bands around them (for gathering food)
Fishing line and a pack of hooks
10' of parachute cord
20' of string strong enough to be bowstring

A small bag that includes a weeks worth of food
2 lbs raisins
1 lb beef jerky
5 lb rice
3 lb beans
1 lb trailmix
salt and pepper
1 lb coffee (ok I'm weak)
most of this fits in a 3lb coffee can, this can be used as a cooking pot cut a hole towards the top of each side and use a metal coat hanger for a handle.
2 cups
2 bowls
2 sets of silverware
2 sets of raingear
1 compass
1 bible in a ziploc baggie
2 sets of clothes each for my son an I
whistle
no battery flashlight
more hooks and fishing line
a roll of sturdy string
a big roll of thread and sewing needles
(I'll have to check my pack but that's all I remember off the top of my head)

In the trunk of my car (I have a very small trunk) I keep:
an axe
a bow with hunting arrows
a machete
a bb/pellet gun with lots of bb's and pellets.
a sleeping bag
a tarp
extra water
rope
my bug out bag listed above

Even more important than all this, I know where local springs are in the mountains, what kind of wild plants I can eat that are abundant locally (this knowledge can be had for free at your local library).

May God bless all of you, just as you have blessed me. Be confident in God's provision.

Your brother in Christ,

Y'all have been such a blessing to me too!!! I KNOW w/o a doubt that God's brought us all together for a reason!!!

Let's all just keep on keeping our focus on HIM...holding each other up in prayer...being about our Father's business...and reaching out to others like never before. "...be strong in the Lord and in the power of His might." (Eph 6:10) No matter what hits, we know He loves us and where we're headed...like Paul we can say that no matter if we live or die, we belong to Him!!!!! In the knowledge of such love, walk as He would have you to!!!!!!

God bless you all abundantly in our Lord Jesus Christ!!!

All love in Him!!!!

I just stumbled across this forum and saw this thread. God started speaking to me a lot about being prepared and storing up supplies and food last year. It was cool because He told me it wasn't as much for me and my family, but for many others that are soon going to need help.

Anyway, this is where I have gleaned most of my info. Millennium Ark

Enjoy!

Your post just spoke so directly to me that I can't stop crying. You have to understand, I have been such a failure at life in many ways but my faith has always been very strong. God has told me that my preparations were not just for me but that many people would be saved through my efforts. I am so humbled that God can use someone as worthless as me as his servant and so thankful.

I know what you mean. I remember asking God once how much Grace He had for me. Instantly He replied, "A little more than you will ever need." Keep up the preperations because soon, I think, we are going to find out what it really means to be salt and light to this world.

Thank you for the welcome all. I have been enjoying reading through a lot of the diffrent topics on this site. It makes me feel a little less alone in this sleepy world.

sugestions for preparing...
when buying food goods, use a black permenant marker and put the date that you got it. That way you know how long it was in the shelf. Rotate it and keep new going in the back, old in front.
each car or what ever vechicle you have , should have a back pack of stuff for emergencies. But don't put food in it. Them thar cars get real hot , so the food will spoil. But cash will help.
home bags or back packs , you can have food.
store bought water has a good shelf life.
Learn to read lables to find the experation dates.
Just figure the ATMs could go off line. I just don't understand why people totally use plastic for getting stuff.
Cell phones might not work, do to over load, or just is down.
Don't panic. That will do way more harm than good.
Think of others, than your self.
ask your local fire station to learn C.E.R.T community emergency response team. It is free.
Learn CPR
Learn First AID.
and most of all....
Trust that God will have it in total controll. As he already does. biggrin.gif

I have a little more time now so I will post a few things my family has been doing to prepare.

1. Prayer - I know that God put this on my heart, and I want to keep that fresh. I also need wisdom on what to do and what not to do. I ask God to help keep my heart and motivation right in doing this. I never want this to be motivated out of fear and selfishness. God will take care of His children, however, His children may be taking care of many others. What I store and prepare is not mine, it is God's.

2. Research - I bought a big book on self sufficency, storage, and preperation. I also have been talking to people that have more experience (I live in the middle of Mormon country so there are many around) and asking them for advice and ideas. There are a lot of good resources out there. The link I posted in my first post is the best site I have seen so far. They have a lot of wisdom and a solid Christian perspective.

3. The Plan - We have figured out a rough plan of what we need and what we can store. We have some decent storage area, but can't afford to stock it to its entirity in one swoop. We are not stressing about how much or how little we have. We just pick up a little extra each time we go to the store and when we get some extra money, we go and get one of the higher priced items on the list. I have been suprised how quickly things accumulate. We are also trying to keep in mind having to live without some of the amenities that we have right now (i.e. Electircity, clean water, gas, communication, etc.).

4. Maintaining - Label and rotate. We use what we have in storage and then when we go to the store, replace what we took out. It keeps things fresh and keeps us up to date.

5. Supplies - We are also storing up non-food supplies. Life is a little less cheerful when you don't have any TP.

6. Other people - A lot of the mainstream Christians that I have talked to have actually been pretty open to this once I explain the reasoning behind doing it. (suprisingly, there are a few that have already been doing this for years and never said anything about it) There are some that have scoffed, and with those, we just just moved on.

7. The Church - This is a difficult part, but it has been worth the effort. The church that my family and I attend has been very open to this is taking on a role to store and prepare as well. We are blessed with a group of people that understand the times that we are living in and that our role as salt and light in this world is a very real and profound truth.

Bottom line - Do what you can with what you have. God is not concerned with quantity, just faithfulness and obedience.
His love abides

Hey Don, Great info. I found a website that shows a picture of that altoids box kit. I was amazed all that fit in there. We have always been campers and when we lived in Florida and my kids were little I tried to keep a bag packed incase there was a fire or a weather emergency. I figured at least I had some clean clothes, food, etc....

Some really great info from all of you guys. Tried and true shared from friends. The Lord led me last year also to stock-up and pay-off everything possible. HE sure does take care of HIS children. Praise the LORD!!

Oh and I just love those wind-up radios. I must be a kid at heart because they just amaze me. biggrin.gif

Maybe we could pin this up so that it doesn't get lost?
There is a lot of good info on this thread.

What do you think?

Soooo many great ideas and input!

After one of the hurricanes I was able to get some MRE's from people who had not used their's, many people just wanted to through them away, so I was able to get a few. One of the things I realized when I tried to stuff all the supplies into the kit was that it got real heavy. I was at first just using a regular backpack that most kids use. Then it grew to the tote bag. So I'm trying to think lite now, but it's amazing how just the basics can get so heavy. I guess I need to work out more with my little weights. smile.gif I've also learned that sometimes the water leaks from the bottles. So I've learned to put everything in air tight plastic bags. After one of the articles on emergency preparation, it mentioned that you should check your bag every season, one, to make sure you have the right kind of clothes in it, (it would be no fun if you've only pack summer stuff, and the emergency happens in the winter, or the other way around.

Don, you have some great ideas with some of the little tins. I'll have to try a few.

I've tried to put a basic kit together and a more extensive supply as well. When I first started doing it I made the mistake of not marking everything with a date, so I could keep track of how long I've had the food. Now I know better. Like everything it's a learning process.

All of you have such great faith and great ideas, you've just blown me away! How the Lord had made you all so aware and has helped you to get you ready! And I don't sense any fear from any of you, which we shouldn't be, because God is taking care of us already. I just think this is so awesome!

Praise God for He has given eyes to see and hears to hear!
