Hmmm. Personally I don't have any portraits of Christ hanging my wall or something like that. I imagine incidental portrayals of Christ, like an illustrated Bible, books magazines, etc are fine.

What's important is that a graven image not be taken to heart For example a picture of Christ is a piece of paper and is not Christ himself. Anyone can throw away a piece of paper or burn it. But to regard it as sacred is not a good thing, i.e. to object to someone throwing away a picture of Christ believing it is a sacred thing would not be right.

Same for someone who believes they are committing blasphemy or sacrilege by destroying a graven image.

If you understand this and are not weak in your faith in Christ then you're probable fine to have something like that in your house. A crucifix or a portrait, not taken as a sacred object, may also testify to a guess in your house that you are a believer in Christ if he or she haven't figured it out (though the fruits that you bear should do that happy.gif )

Anyway this is a lot similar to the topic of foods offered to idols discussion. Read Corinthians 1:8 as it is a similar theme.

May the Spirit of God guid you.

I think a picture is ok as long as you're not worshipping it--that's when it becomes an idol. Otherwise it reminds you of the Lord, and to me, that's fine. I have pictures in my house, like the one in my avatar.
RosielovesJesus
We have a picture of Jesus knocking on a door. It is a constant reminder that He wants to be in our lives-every aspect of our lives and that we should make Him center of it. My son has it hanging in his room and it gently remindes us of who we belong to and shows others that come in our home that we follow Him.

We have praying hands, crosses, Noahs ark cloth wall hanging and angels. We don't worship them, we just love to decorate with heavenly reminders. Our praying hands has a beautiful verse about how important it is to start the day in prayer-how important the middle of the day is for prayer and the end of the day.
So I guess you would say pray without ceasing.

I have a chalk board in the kitchen and I have wrote when will this world see that we need Jesus. So you could say that I bombard people with Jesus when they walk in the house and He is the best conversation (peace-play on words) than I could ever think of.

My step grandmother had a picture of Jesus that when you walk by He changes into the Jesus knocking on the door with a light overhead. She passed away and my grandfather gave it to us. So it is a keep sake from my step grandma and just a beautiful reminder of God's love and the love she gave to me.

If the image isn't used for worship, I would say it isn't a big deal...when you start talking to that instead of going to church, I would say get rid of it.

I always questioned Jesus pics.
I certainly wouldn't be surprised if Jesus looked nothing at all from
those pics.

My son-in-law pastors a Reformed Church in Nebraska ... RCUS.

This denomination, unlike many Reformed Churches that have gone liberal (what churches haven't !) is quite conservative in their doctrine.

This denomination does not display pictures of Jesus in any form, even in their books for children. They also uphold to the 6 day creation as being 6 days.

I think it would be wise not to have picutes of Jesus ... attempting to make Him appear as man would envision.

What’s the use of having a picture of Jesus when no one today knows what Jesus looked like? It is sad that people need pictures icons and crosses and stuff.

I 100% agree with Adstar on this one!!!

no, it is not okay. why is it that you should not put a face on God???

how many of us really believe that we know what Jesus looks like? I'm sure the majority of our brothers and sisters would hone in on the universal image we all have of Jesus.

and therein lies the danger.......

Satan has many many tricks up his sleeves to deceive the majority during the coming tribulation.

my brothers and sisters, i ask you who has the ability to setup an image and develop that image through time?????

I agree. I do not worship my pictures. These are the things I like to decorate my home with. I figure why not decorate with my faith. .

This is something my husband and I agree on, so for me it is a done deal.
We are one and this one thinks it is okay. We are not bowing down to the pictures.
We only worship God.

And shy1 I for one love your picture in your avatar.

I have a beautiful picture of Jesus looking over the world and shedding a tear on my desktop. Every time I get on my computer it reminds me how very much He loves us...not the picture...my Savior! If I believed the picture was Jesus or even a depiciton of how he actually looks, then I would see a problem...JMHO

you may not make an image because jesus is the image of God which he has chosen for man to be worshipped. and jesus is also the one who carried all sins as a son of man. all these things are in the same commandment.
Crankitup
No man-made image of Jesus can come anywhere close to representing His glory. If anyone wants to be inspired with a picture of what Jesus looks like now, then read the relevant passages in Revelation. They are all the inspiration you will need.

Most of the images of Jesus in the religious world though focus on his crucifixion & death. In fact many of our Catholic friends may say "Well I like crucifixes because they remind us of his death & suffering." I'd rather focus on the fact that He is alive and risen. In any case, Jesus at the last supper said that the partaking of the bread & wine in communion was to be his remembrance. Furthermore, it's nonsensical to have a cross with a statue representing Christ on it with his head tilted to one side and a few scratches and superficial wounds. The reality was much different. Before he was nailed to the cross Jesus was whipped with something resembling a cat-o-nine tails that had pieces of stone & bone/wood in the ends of the straps. They marred him with this instrument to a point beyond human likeness in fulfillment of the Isa 52 prophecy.

Rev 1:12 Then I turned to see the voice that spoke with me. And having turned I saw seven golden lampstands, 13 and in the midst of the seven lampstands One like the Son of Man, clothed with a garment down to the feet and girded about the chest with a golden band. 14 His head and hair were white like wool, as white as snow, and His eyes like a flame of fire; 15 His feet were like fine brass, as if refined in a furnace, and His voice as the sound of many waters; 16 He had in His right hand seven stars, out of His mouth went a sharp two-edged sword, and His countenance was like the sun shining in its strength. 17 And when I saw Him, I fell at His feet as dead. But He laid His right hand on me, saying to me,[c] “Do not be afraid; I am the First and the Last. 18 I am He who lives, and was dead, and behold, I am alive forevermore.

No, its God the Fathers decree to worship Jesus, because of all people, Jesus has the LEAST ego and cares the LEAST about getting honor and worship.

A very fundamental word in this passage is graven. It is amazing how I see people just skip over this word like it doesn't exist. There is no problem with having a picture of Jesus in your house. If it is a remeinder for you and brings you to reflect and think apon him then it is a very good thing. If you worship the image, believing that the picture itself is God then you have a problem. Don't get cought up in the leagalism. It is about you and God. 1dsz5e4.gif

I agree with you Kansas Dad and Rosie. biggrin.gif

I have a picture of Jesus at the Wailing Wall in Jerusalem with his arms around a elderly Jewish man sitting on a box, another Jewish man is standing next to the Wall wearing his prayer shawl, and of another Jewish man dress in black with the curles at his temples is standing next to the Wall.

I like it for several reasons. (1) Jesus loves the Jewish people. (2) Salvation come from the Jews( our Lord was Jewish).(3) I was at the Wailing Wall in 1986 (4) We need to pray for Israel and the Jewish people (5) It is a beautiful painting done by a women who never painted in her life. The Lord placed it on a ministers heart to give the woman the paints and materials. She has other paintings as well. (6) I like to decorate my home with angels and crosses from other countries, and pictures I have taken in Israel. (7) I had several angels experiences when I almost died several times. I do not worship angels. It is just a reminder they are with us, watching over us and ministering to us. (8) When you look out my frontroom window you will see a three foot tall angel standing with wings spread out, in a praying posture on a pedestal near a pink dogwood tree. At night a spot light shines on her and when it snows it looks like a snowglob. Everyone who sees it likes it very it is so peaceful looking. If someone made male looking angel I'd have one.....so far no one makes them around here. So I have a female one. We can get our tails in a knot about male and female angels too. I hope we don't. I have heard of many stories of male and female angels helping people. The angels that came to me were male....I saw neither of them...they spoke to me and told me what I was to do...in order to live.

I do not worship pictures of Jesus. They are reminders of his love for us. They are comforting to look at. They are converstaion starters. I don't know of anyone who has pictures in thier homes of Jesus....worship his pictures. I also do not worship angels....and I know they are around me....and you. They watch over us all. Jesus came to me once too, when I was dying. Funny, I can't tell you what he looked like only that the love in His eyes was so strong...I wanted to go with Him. But, He said it wasn't my time. So with these pictures in my home I get a chance to witness to others about what the Lord has done for me....and what He will do for them. I am a miracle walking and talking...if it wasn't for Jesus and His angels I would not be here today....and that's a fact!!! wub.gif

We must be careful not to be legalistic. Having a Legalistic spirit pushes people away. Jesus didn't like it in his time either. sad.gif

I have the same pic you have Rosie, of Yeshua knocking on the door.

So...gonna offer a different perspective.

I don't think it is an issue to have religious items in your house, for a couple of reasons:

1. We are created in His image...so, I really do not think it is far reaching for us to believe He may indeed look like us, and we like Him. Just something to consider.

2. Crosses and crucifixes could be construed to focus on His death...but, speaking personally, when I see a cross, it humbles me greatly. Therefore, I have a cross in my house. I certainly do not think it is a bad thing to be reminded of His sacrifice, and humbled by the cross.

Of course, like others have said, if we fall on our knees in front of a picture of Him, or in front of the cross, then yes, that is an issue. Anyhow...just my thoughts.

Hi,

It sounds like you have a beautiful sanctuary...with reminders. In Isaiah 53
it speaks of Yeshua as one ;"he hath no form nor comeliness; and when we shall see him, there is not beauty that we should desire(spiritually discerned).
He is despised and rejected of men; a man of sorrows, and acquainted with grief; and we hid as it were our faces from him; he was despised, and we esteemed him not". vs2,3

I was in Israel in 1988 and baptized in the Jordan...my first.

Pray for the peace of Jerusalem.

indeed i wonder if there exist any pics of Jesus which fit the description:

It is a typical Anabaptist wiew that making the picture of anything is incorrect, though, quite frankly, some of the most beautiful and exacting colored pencil picture that I havae seen are from them. My friends make their own cards to send to friends and family and teach their children to draw. One of their most detailed instructions is that color and type must be as God created it.

I never have been able to get a good answer on that one. I asked because I wondered the very same thing....trying not to do the wrong thing, I wasn't trying to put anyone on the spot just get answers to things prickling my own conscience....and who better to ask than fols that have a problem with their pictures being taken and such?

I still feel weird about it. I have a brother that will wreck your camera, I don't care how much it costs, if you take his picture. But I think that was a case more about the police....

I keep picture people give me that are special, but my walls are pretty bare. My sons are too. My daughter doesn't have a rpoblem with it and having pictures even tweeks her senses of justice and compassion. I don't disagree with her.

Question.....if we find out that it is wrong, would we throw them all away?
Perhaps that is the better question.

If God says to me it is wrong and I hear Him and know its Him of course i will throw it away.

Hi,

The etchings of Gustave Dore are shared on this forum and they are
inspired and inspiring...

I don't think we should look to outside doctrine of groups...but look
to the doctrine of our hears...prayfully. Where we have liberty, maybe
others do not. And where we are held accountable for what we
have learned then we must obey no matter how small, true?

I am learning all the time, when in doubt throw it out! That's not to
say I didn't always know why, and sometimes I don't want the
question going around in my head...I was told that if I could be trusted
with a little(thing) then I would be trusted with more(things of God). Do you know what I mean? When I have to make big decisions, then
hopefully I will discern the Fathers heart and do it, if not immediately,
sooner than later...oh, the spirit is willing but the flesh is weak.

Blessings,
Signet

May the Spirit of God guid you.

my partner lives in the phillippines and when i was in the phillippines i saw things that blew me away not only did i see pictures or statues of jesus i saw posters of this girl child that is to be jesus daughter plastered on every building and on the posts and each poster of this girl child that is to be jesus daughter had roses next to the posters

you even had sevral buisness making symbols of mary and statues of mary every community or village or farming community you go into you see jesus face even on the houses though sevral of our new members do have pictures of jesus in their homes as my partner has just started 4 new bible study groups and these bible study groups are run from these new members homes as i was told they use to be catholics but are born again christians i said nothing when i sat in the bible studys

as the langauge was hard to pick up only one farmer could speak english which it was good talking to some who could speak english and he is aware of idol worship and what god says about this

though my partner and her family and the members in her church do not have this in their homes as she told me when she gave her life to god she got rid of what she had of jesus and burnt it then the he family did the same her brother was the last one as he has only just given his heart to the lord and burnt what he had
