Terror goes five star

New Delhi Nov 27: Terrorism has emerged in a new form where 5-star hotels and urban areas are being made the target by jihadi forces. The fresh series of terror acts is clearly targeting foreign nationals from Britain, Israel and the United States. The Mumbai terror attack is reminiscent of the massive bomb blast that hit the Marriott Hotel in Pakistan’s capital, Islamabad, in September this year. The blast created a 20-feet-deep crater, and destroyed the entire front section of the hotel killing at least 40 people. The explosion — a suspected suicide bombing —bore the hallmarks of Al Qaeda, given the scale and the target of the attack, security officials said.

The Marriott had previously been the target of militants. Last year, a suicide bom-ber killed himself and one other in an attack on the hotel. The Marriott is a prestigious hotel in the capital city of Pakistan, popular amongst foreigners and the Pakistani elite. The hotel is located near government buildings and diplomatic missions. The 2005 bombings in Bali, Indonesia, were also a series of terrorist suicide bomb attacks targeting foreign nationals.

The bombings took place near Jimbaran food court and Kuta Town Square. Another two bombs exploded at Warungs along the Jimbaran beach, one of which was near the Four Seasons Hotel. These areas are generally popular with Western tourists. The 2002 bombings in Bali had killed at least 200 people, 164 of whom were foreign nationals, and 38 Indonesian citizens. The attack involved the detonation of three bombs: a backpack-mounted device carried by a suicide bomber and a large car bomb, both of which were detonated near popular nightclubs in Kuta.

Forces, militants battle it out

New Delhi Nov. 27: The government has made it clear that it is in no mood to negotiate with the terrorists who have held more than 70 people hostage at Mumbai’s five-star Taj Hotel, Trident Hotel and Nariman House since Wednesday night. The union home minister Mr Shivraj Patil, who flew to Mumbai at 3 am on Thursday morning, accompanied by the National Security Guard director general Mr J.K. Dutt and 200 NSG commandos on board, conveyed to the Maharashtra government the Centre’s stand that no negotiations will be offered to the terrorists, a senior home ministry official said on condition on anonymity.

The official said that the Centre and security agencies are “well-prepared’’ for “operations’’ launched against the terrorists to continue till early Friday morning. About 800 Army personnel, 400 NSGs, 40 Marine commandos, 600 Rapid Action Force personnel besides the Mumbai police continued to remain engaged in a fierce gunbattle with the militants on Thursday. A senior home ministry official confirmed that the terrorists had used the sea-route to enter Mumbai to fulfill their agenda.

Though the government is not looking at any “time frame’’ for the operations to continue, it was indicated that the terrorists who had laid no demands before the government so far, were only trying to prolong the agony of the Indian government. “At the moment, the Centre’s stand is very clear. There will be no negotiations with the terrorists. Mr Patil has conveyed the Centre’s line to the Maharasthra government,” the MHA official said. Sources at the MHA revealed that the “explosions’’ witnessed at the five-star hotels, where rescue operations had been launched by security forces to free the hostages, and were being carried out by the expert NSG team, were part of a strategy to distract the militants holed up in the hotels.

“These are called ‘stun explosions’ which are part of a strategy to distract the enemy during an operation,” a security official said. “The current operation is emerging as the biggest operation against terrorists in which different security forces have pitched in to drive the militants out,” said an MHA official. Earlier, security forces had successfully conducted counter-offensive operations like, Blue Star, Charar-e-Sharif, Akshardham and Parliament. Mr Patil, who rushed back to the capital on Thursday to attend the special Cabinet meet, briefed the Cabinet on the situation in Mumbai.

Mr Patil parried questions on whether it was an intelligence failure and said that the Centre has gathered “information’’ on the terrorists, which will be shared after it is “confirmed’’ and at the “appropriate time’’. He also said that the terrorists had left by the time he reached the terror sites. “Before I could reach there, the terrorists who had attacked one of the hospitals, the Cama Hospital, had left and those who attacked the railway station had also left,” Mr Patil said.

‘Terrorists wore jeans’

Mumbai, Nov. 27: A British national, who escaped from the clutches of terrorists who took guests hostage at the Taj hotel in Mumbai, on Thursday said the militants were young men of not more than 20-25 years of age. “They (terrorists) were not more than 20-25 and were dressed in jeans and T-shirts and were aggressive in their demeanour. They kept screaming that they wanted anyone with a British or an American passport,” the witness said.

“There were 15 of us and I was really scared since I am a British national. Two of the terrorists, while screaming constantly, took us up the stairs — to the 18th floor. Luckily for us, the room was full of smoke and two of us escaped from the stairs. Another three escaped after us but I have no idea about the others. I think about five to seven people are still on the roof,” he said.

The terrorists, according to the witness, carried a machine gun and one rifle. The attack in Mumbai began Wednesday night, when militants attacked Taj Mahal Palace and Tower Hotel, Oberoi Trident Hotel, Metro Theatre and the Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus railway station. At least 101 people, including a foreign tourist and four top police officers, were killed and over 250 injured.

Taj GM’s wife, sons killed

Mumbai, Nov. 27: The wife and the two sons of Taj Hotels general manager Mr Karambir Kang were killed in the terrorist attack on the hotel. A relative of the family, which is from Mohali, said while Mr Kang was not in the hotel on Wednesday, his wife Neeti and sons Uday, 14 and Samar, 5, in the terrorist strike. The three deceased were residing in the accommodation provided to them at the hotel and became targets of the terrorist bullets, a relative of the Kangs told reporters in Mohali.

Two MPs — Mr Lal Mani Prasad and Mr Jaisingrao Gaikwad Patil — who were at the Taj hotel are safe in their rooms, said Parliament member Mr N.N. Krishnadas who was himself rescued from there by commandos on Thursday. “They are safe in their hotel rooms,” Mr Krishnadas, an MP of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) from Kerala, said. “They are expected to join us after the entire operation is over,” he added. Meanwhile, Adani group chairman Mr Gautam Adani, who was in a restaurant at Taj hotel described it as the “most horrible experience of his life.”

“We were having dinner at the Chambers’ which is a restaurant on the first floor of Taj on Wednesday evening,” Mr Adani said. Top managers at Unilever and its Indian subsidiary Hindustan Unilever (HUL) had a narrow escape on Wednesday night after terrorists attacked the Taj. All of them were safely evacuated from the hotel. The key executives were attending a farewell dinner for the outgoing group ceo of Unilever, Patrick Cescau, when the terrorists opened fire.

European MP escapes siege

London Nov. 27: A British member of European Parliament, who was in Mumbai as part of a EU trade delegation, was caught in the terrorist siege at Taj Mahal hotel in Mumbai on Wednesday. Conservative MEP Sajjad Karim, who represents northwest England in European Parliament, was in Mumbai with EU international trade committee which comprised MEP Erika Mann, Daniel Caspary, Jan Masiel, Béla Glattfelder, Syed Kamall, and Ignasi Guardans Cambó. Mr Karim, the first British Muslim to become an MEP in 2004, told the BBC that he had fled to a basement away from terrorists in the hotel. “I was in a room that was completely sealed off but I could hear what was going on. The security forces fought them floor by floor, and room by room,” he said.

“I was in the lobby of the hotel when gunmen came in and people started running. There were about 25 or 30 of us. There was a lot of commotion. Some of us split one way and some another. A gunman just stood there spraying bullets around, right next to me,” he recalled. “I managed to turn away and I ran into the hotel kitchen and then we were shunted into a restaurant in the basement,” he added. Mr Karim, who lives at Simonstone in the Ribble Valley, said: “I left the Taj at 5 am and was taken to a secure place. The situation in the city is still ongoing but certainly at the Taj I think it is over.”

Families suffer as city bleeds

Mumbai Nov. 27: The attacks on the city on Wednesday night left the city shocked, scared and scarred. But one-year-old Shubham has no clue as to what has been going on in the city for the past two days. He does not know anything about terrorism, hostages or bomb blasts. Sarjerao Bhosle, 26, the security guard of the Oberoi Trident Hotel, who was the only earning member of his family, succumbed to bullet injuries. If that wasn’t tragic enough, Bhosle was Shubham’s only parent. Apart from Shubham, Bhosle is survived by his mother and younger brother Bajirao. Bhosle lost his wife to an illness after the child’s birth and his father to a natural death a couple of years ago.

Pandurang Patil, a neighbour said, “This boy (Bhosle) had gone through many things. Since the age of 22, he was handling the whole family single-handedly. It was his father’s death anniversary. Unfortunately, he died on the very same day too.” Meanwhile, Sushma Yadav, 21, had been living in Gujarat, where her husband works, for the past many months. On Wednesday, her husband accompanied her to Mumbai from where she was to travel to UP with some relatives. She was pregnant and also had a four-month-old child, Sheetal, to take care of.

The terrorists attacked when her husband Akhilesh Yadav was buying the tickets. All three suffered injuries. While Sheetal was hit on the shoulder and Akhilesh in the head, Sushma was shot in the right foot. According to reports, Akhilesh and Sheetal are in critical condition. Family tragedies seemed to hit the city thick and fast as six members Mohammed Ansari’s family lost their lives and two were badly injured during the terror attack in the Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus (CST). The six members of Mr Ansari's family who lost their lives are nephews, Murtaza Ansari, Sarfaraaz Ansari, brother Mohammed Ilyas Ansari, brother-in-law Abbas Ansari, son-in-law Arif Ansari and sister Rakila Khatoon Ansari. His other two nephews Mahboob Ansari, 19, and Afroz Ansari, 12, are severely injured.
