1864 Presidential Campaign
By 1864, the Country had grown weary of the long and bloody Civil War. Hundreds of thousands of the countries' best and bravest young men had fallen on the fields of Bull Run, Antietam, Shiloh, and countless more. Many began to think that the war was not worth it, and the price of freedom too great. The Republican Presidential Candidate Abraham Lincoln thought no price was too great for the abolition of slavery and the creation of a society in which a man was not judged by the color of his skin. Unfortunately, after four long years of war, Lincoln's support was dropping fast, and people were looking for a way out of the war.

With this backdrop, the Democratic Party chose General George McClellan to be their Presidential Candidate at the Chicago National Convention in 1864. The Democratic Party Platform presented a plan of "Compromise with the South", which became known as "The Chicago Platform". While on its surface the Chicago Platform was seductive in that it promised an immediate cessation of hostilities, and a restoration of the union. What was unsaid in the platform, but clearly implied, was that the "compromise" would be to agree to make permanent the institution of slavery in exchange for an end to the Civil War and restoration of the Union. In other words, the Democratic party was ready to "Sell Out" the enslaved, in order to stop further loss of white lives. This is reflected in McClellan's acceptance speech, where he stated:

The reestablishment of the Union, in all its integrity, is and must continue to be the indispensable condition in any settlement.

If reestablishment of the union was the only "condition" that was "indispensable", then clearly the issue of abolition of slavery was dispensable, and the possibility of Slavery being permanently institutionalized in our country was on the negotiation table. Thomas Nast exposed the hypocrisy of the Democratic Platform with his stunning illustration entitled "The Chicago Platform", which is shown above. In this illustration, Nast wrote out the "words" of the democratic platform, and wrapped the words around dramatic illustrations indicating what the words really meant. In effect, Nast "decoded" the words of the platform in his illustration, to clearly communicate what the Democrats stood for . . . continuation of the institution of slavery in exchange for an end to the war.

This is an incredible illustration, so I will present detailed views of the various inset illustrations for your research and perusal. Below, I show Close Ups of the various parts of this incredible illustration.

Illustration of a Slave Hunt

The Democratic Platform:

The 1864 Democratic Platform began with the words:

Resolved, that in the future, as in the past, we will adhere with unswerving fidelity to the Union under the Constitution, as the only solid foundation of our strength, security, and happiness as a people, and as a framework of government equally conducive to the welfare and prosperity of all the States, both Northern and Southern.

Nast wrapped these words around an image of their true meaning, showing men and dogs hunting down runaway slaves. The image to your left presents this portion of the illustration above.

Nast points out in this drawing that the "people" referred to were clearly the white people. That returning to the Constitution of that day meant a return to a country where Blacks were property, and had no rights. The "Prosperity of the Southern States" clearly was a Democratic Promise to make slavery a permanent institution in the country, in exchange for an end to the Civil War.

The next section of the Democratic Platform reads:

Resolved, that the direct interference of the military authorities of the United States in the recent elections held in Kentucky, Maryland, Missouri, and Delaware, was a shameful violation of the Constitution, and a repetition of such acts in the approaching election will be held as revolutionary, and resisted with all the means and power under our control.

In mid-term elections, the Government required that Citizens be loyal to the Union in order to vote, and the military was present to ensure free and fair elections, without intimidation from Treasonous Northerners, Confederate Sympathizers, and those enriched by the Slave Trade. The democratic party opposed this, and believed that those slave-sympathizers engaged in treason against the country should be allowed to vote, and be allowed to intimidate others. In the inset image below, Nast illustrates the free and safe elections, which were so offensive to the Democrats of the day.

The Chicago Platform went on to state:

"the Constitution itself has been disregarded in every part, and public liberty and private right alike trodden down"

The issue referred to here is that Abraham Lincoln had issued the Emancipation Proclamation in 1863, which freed the slaves. The Chicago Platform viewed this as disregarding the constitutional rights of Southerners. Specifically, the right to own slaves, to beat slaves, and to kill slaves. The Nast illustration captured this irony by wrapping these words around two illustrations . . . one shows Lincoln Freeing the Slaves, and the other shows the "old way", in which blacks were owned, beaten, and tortured at the whim of whites.

The Chicago Platform further reads:

that the aim and object of the Democratic party are to preserve the federal Union and the rights of the States unimpaired

Nast's Illustration then points out that the "Rights of the States Unimpaired" was a nice way of saying, "States may Continue to practice Slavery, with all its associated brutality, unencumbered by the Federal Government". The illustration shows a slave auction. At the slave auction, a black family is being sold. The Mother is being sold separately from the child and Husband. Clearly, the family was being split apart and sold separately. In the second image, a black man is shown tied to a tree and being brutally beaten by two men with whips. Other slaves are forced to watch the brutality, I suppose as a warning to them. All this was accepted practice in the United States of the 1850's and 1860's. The Democratic Platform of 1864 was strongly supporting continuing this practice as "Business as Usual".

This part of the illustration, which is the lower left of the original leaf, shows other implications of compromising with the south, as the Democrats wanted. Slave hunters are shown moving North, and attacking Northern families that are harboring runaway slaves. Union Generals are shown bowing to Jefferson Davis, paying homage to the Rebel Leader. Southern Rebels are shown drinking and celebrating over the graves of Union Soldiers, who had died in a useless war. Perhaps most inflammatory, is the illustration suggesting that if the Democrats were successful, Jefferson Davis could potentially be a strong candidate for President of the United States in 1868.

Buffalo Soldiers Returned to Slavery

While totally undermining the Union Army, and what it was trying to do, the Chicago Platform went on to allege its support of the individual soldiers and their families.

Resolved, that the sympathy of the Democratic party is heartily and earnestly extended to the soldiers of our army and the seamen of our navy, who are and have been in the field under the flag of their country; and, in the event of its attaining power, they will receive all the care, protection, and regard that the brave soldiers and sailors of the republic have so nobly earned.

Nast's Illustration pointed out the Hypocrisy of alleging to support the Soldier, while undermining what they are fighting for. The words above are wrapped around a picture of Black Buffalo Soldiers in the Union Army being captured and returned to their Slave Owners. Since this would be the outcome of the Democratic Platform, the Nast illustration points out that the Democrats "sympathy" must have only extended to the White Soldiers, as the Blacks would have been returned to Slavery.

This Nast Illustration entitled "The Chicago Platform" was published on October 15, 1864, shortly before the 1864 Presidential Election. It was printed in Harper's Weekly, the most popular illustrated newspaper of the day. Harper's Weekly was read by approximately 1,250,000 people each week. This was a reasonable fraction of the voting public of the day. At the point this illustration was published, few thought that Abraham Lincoln had much of a chance of winning a second term as President of the United States. The country had grown weary of the cost of the war; both the monetary and human cost, and was being won over by the promise of the Democratic Party to end the War, to end the pain, and to end the suffering. This seductive message had began to gain traction, and our country was on the verge of accepting Slavery as a Permanent, and Protected National Institution.

The Thomas Nast Illustration of "The Chicago Platform" helped to raise the righteous indignation of the Nation. It helped to remind us what we were fighting for, and why so many had suffered and died. It helped remind us that as a Nation we could only be Truly Free if we were All Free. It showed that if we gave up before we won, all had died in vain, and their sacrifice was for nothing. It helped us to realize that there was a purpose, and that the victory had yet to be won. It helped give us the strength to fight on.

With the help of Thomas Nast, and his Powerful Illustration, Abraham Lincoln did win the 1864 election. The Union was restored, and Slavery was abolished, once and for all. The Nation was put on a new path of freedom and justice for all. This illustration helps to show the "power of the pen", and that Thomas Nast was a Master Illustrator whose Pen helped shape our Nation, and the freedoms we still enjoy.

The selling out of freedoms (for a certain segment of the population then) for security?

I do find it ironic that the position of the Democratic party was at one time in favor for institutionalizing slavery in return for the peace and unity of the Union, that same party who now has the first African American as president.

I wonder if Obama is the ultimate Democratic apology.

People should not forget it was a Whig that ended (black) slavery in America.

Yes, that's it HB ~ YAY~

Yes, the Whig party that Abraham Lincoln was a party of helped end slavery. But also, Lincoln was a Republican. He was a leader of that party in Illonois...

To me, that article that I posted sounds a lot of what took place in this election. Obama turned it around and used his own kind of flattery and imagery to gain the sympathies of his supports.

To me it is akin to double speak. Saying one thing but underlying there is a hidden message. John McCain began to pick up on this in the campaign....He was warning the people to pay attention to Obama's speech.

I just found it interesting...

Like Lincoln and FDR, Obama faces nation in crisis

WASHINGTON – All presidents are tested. Few walk into the Oval Office when the nation is in the throes of multiple crises.

Like Franklin Delano Roosevelt, President-elect Obama is facing a banking emergency.

Like Abraham Lincoln, Obama is trying to patch up national divisions. To ready himself for the job, Obama said Friday he is reading some writings by Lincoln, "who's always an extraordinary inspiration."

And like Richard Nixon, George W. Bush and others, Obama will be commander in chief over U.S. troops in combat.

"With two wars and an economic crisis, this is one step away from what Lincoln or FDR faced," said Terry Sullivan, associate professor of political science at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. "The question is `Which direction is the nation going to go?'"

While the challenges Obama faces are daunting, they also give him the opportunity to shape history in a big way.

"My 88-year-old mother asks me regularly, `Why would anybody want to be president now?' said Sullivan, who manages the Presidential Transition Project at Rice University. "My answer is 'Every one of them wants to be FDR.' This is their chance. What makes fame in the American presidency is a great challenge and succeeding." Or, Sullivan added, facing a great challenge and failing.

In fewer than 11 weeks, Obama will inherit not just the economic crisis and the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, but also the ongoing threat of a terrorist attack, a resurgent Russia and nuclear proliferation in hot spots across the globe.

"We are in an almost unprecedented situation, at least in modern times," White House chief of staff Joshua Bolten said in a C-SPAN interview Friday.

Knowing his opening moves will be widely scrutinized, Obama tried to roll back expectations on election night.

"Our climb will be steep," he said. "We may not get there in one year or even in one term."

Yet he remained upbeat as did Roosevelt, who took the reins of a nation in the depths of the Depression. FDR used his optimism to lift up the downtrodden and refresh the American spirit. "The only thing we have to fear is fear itself," he said at his inauguration in 1933.

When Roosevelt died in 1945, by then a wartime president making secret plans for an atomic bomb, Harry Truman told reporters, "I felt like the moon, the stars and all the planets had fallen on me."

In an earlier conflict, when the country was on the brink of civil war, Lincoln took a hands-off approach during a four-month lag between his election and inauguration, staying mum so as not to inflame tensions in the North or the South. After Lincoln was elected, but before he took office, South Carolina announced its decision to secede from the Union. Six more states then seceded and together formed the Confederate States of America.

During the transition, Lincoln maintained what became known as an attitude of "masterly inactivity," said Harold Holzer, who recently wrote the book "Lincoln President-Elect." Lincoln didn't want to do anything that would upset the South, lose him the support of abolitionists in the North or the northern Democrats whom he needed on his side if there was going to be a fight to save the union.

"He thought the best way to deal with it was to be silent," Holzer said.

Like Lincoln, Obama used his first speech as president-elect to try to mend fences — and he did it by quoting Lincoln's conciliatory first inaugural address, which was given at a time of such national turmoil that Lincoln traveled to Washington in secret for safety.

"Let's remember that it was a man from this state who first carried the banner of the Republican Party to the White House, a party founded on the values of self-reliance and individual liberty and national unity," Obama said of Lincoln, another lanky lawmaker from Illinois.

"As Lincoln said to a nation far more divided than ours, we are not enemies but friends," Obama said. "Though passion may have strained, it must not break our bonds of affection."

To reach out to his critics, Lincoln even allowed a reporter from an opposition newspaper, a journalist named Henry Villard, to virtually move into his office in Springfield, Mo., to chronicle the transition.

"That's the equivalent of Obama picking up the phone and asking Sean Hannity to move in," Holzer said of the conservative television personality.

Roosevelt, who picked members of the opposing party for Cabinet spots, was as noncommittal as Lincoln as he was about to be sworn into office amid a banking crisis. When Herbert Hoover asked him to sign on to a bank holiday — a temporary closure of banks — three days before inauguration, Roosevelt famously looked up and said, "The drapes look very pretty. I'm sure Eleanor will want to keep these just as they are."

That made Hoover furious. Soon after taking the oath of office, Roosevelt declared the banking holiday on his own.

In his first fireside chat in March 1933, FDR said: "We had a bad banking situation. Some of our bankers had shown themselves either incompetent or dishonest in their handling of the people's funds. They had used the money entrusted to them in speculations and unwise loans. ... It was the government's job to straighten out this situation and do it as quickly as possible, and the job is being performed."

Sound familiar?

"He wanted to do it himself. A clean slate is what Lincoln wanted. It's what Roosevelt wanted," Holzer said. "The lessons of history are there. The most successful transformative presidencies were patient between the election and the inauguration."

Maybe history is repeating itself in that regard. When President Bush announced before the election that he was hosting a global economic summit in Washington on Nov. 15, the Obama camp said the presidential hopeful wouldn't be there. "He understands there is only one president," an Obama adviser said.

It's early in the transition to draw many conclusions, but Obama's style as a candidate and a legislator was to proceed in a measured, disciplined fashion.

"Obama is an empty vessel into which the American people can be expected to pour their inexhaustible supply of hope — in just the same way that they did in 1932," said Bruce Kuklick, professor of history at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia.

Obama supporters who spontaneously flocked to the White House into the wee hours after his election Tuesday night were anxious for Obama to move forward. Gazing at the illuminated Executive Mansion where Bush slept, one waved signs that said: "Why wait? Evict Bush now."

For some, jubilation was tempered by recognition of the enormity of the tasks Obama faces.

"It's not just about him," said Rachel Reclam, of Olympia, Wash., an international affairs student at George Washington University. "He inspired people, but I'm not expecting miracles. The financial crisis, the war in Iraq, the health care crisis are not going to be over tomorrow."

This election is bringing out the manifestations of the heart. Here is a real-life situation that happened to a friend;
This person delivers whole-sale food to various restaurants, convenient stores and grocery stores. So he is going out of the store (yesterday) and holds the door for a lady and she stops and say's "Yeah, you better get used to that!"

Obama is NOT the problem here...it is an enemy like cancer that has been slowly eating away at people's hearts and minds and it has to come out.

To crush under his feet all the prisoners of the earth.

It is not that far of a leap to see where this was going to go when the nation elected a man who sat under the preaching of Jeremiah Wright (who IS NOT a Christian even though he professes to be one) and who said....

"If God is for White people than G-d d_ mn America"!

I ask you..... where are the cries against that statement???????????

I didn't see any African Americans speaking out against that statement and calling it racist.

But I sure did see a lot of white people speaking out against other white's, like myself, just because we don't like Obama.

And again... I can assure you that it has NOTHING to do with the color of his skin. It has everything to do with his policies and his associations.

I don't like Hillary Clinton either...but nobody calls me a racist for not liking her!!!!

I find comments that some of these Democrats are making to be HIGHLY ignorant and insulting.

Oh and this; Christians ought to just not even vote period. Perhaps if being that this nation is 1/3 Christian and we all stopped voting for a man and rather cast our sure vote to our Heavenly King; then He might come and be our King wink.gif Soooooooner.

"The King's heart is like channels of water IN THE HAND OF THE LORD: HE TURNS it wherever HE desires. Every man is right in his own eye, But the LORD WEIGHS THE HEARTS.

Let us all pray, the enemy hates it when you don't call out to God for Help...Ask him to HELP YOU PRAY, to take away all bitterness or doubt, and fear, so that you are then able to allow the HOLY SPIRIT to strengthen you and give you peace.

Don't you know that the ENEMY WORKS WITH FEAR and hopes to put you in a state of hopelessness and complacency?

PRAISE JESUS, walk by Faith and not by Sight...Yes Jesus said will there be Faith found on Earth when he returns.....We are to be soldiers for Christ, to pull them out of the FIRE and into the LIVING WATERS of our Redeeming Savior and LORD...Yes the LORD is ALWAYS there for your doubts, fears, anxieties, worries...even if some of the most horrible things that our fear imagines may happen, it is not time to give into fear for it only feeds the FLame....CRY OUT TO JESUS, for his PEACE and LOVE and GRACE HAS OVERCOME THE WORLD...and GREATER IS HE THAT IS WITHIN THEE THAN THE ONE whom is walking to and for to devour...GREATER IS OUR LORD JESUS CHRIST, for we are covered in the Blood of a MIGHTY GOD, whom is JEALOUS FOR HIS PEOPLE...so when the enemy comes...HE WILL STRENGTHEN YOU IN PEACE and the PEACE OF GOD WILL BE YOUR ARMOR AND COMFORT...HE IS THE COMFORTER, turn to HIM for this WORLD's evil only wants to cause hopelessness and lack of Faith in the children of God.

It's is no mistake that you wrote this post...for the LORD lead me to this just yesterday.

By the President of the United States of America

States of America:

A Proclamation

For a Day of National Humiliation

Fasting and Prayer

Whereas, the Senate of the United States, devoutly recognize the Supreme Authority and Just Government of Almighty God, in all the affairs of men and of nations, has, by a resolution, requested the President to designate and set apart a day for National prayer and humiliation:

And whereas, it is the DUTY OF ALL NATIONS, as well as of men, to own their dependence upon the overruling power of God, to confess their sins and transgressions, in humble sorrow, yet with assured hope that genuine repentance will lead to mercy and pardon: and to recognize the sublime truth, announced in Holy Scriptures and proven by all history, that those nations only are blessed whose God is the Lord.

Abraham Lincoln....the proclamation is preserved in the Library of Congress as Appendix number 19 in volume 12 of the United States At Large. It was initiated by a resolution of the United States Senate, and was officially declared by President Lincoln on March 30,1863

DO THEY STILL PRAY IN CONGRESS NOW?

ARE WE NOW as a NATION and nations throughout the world NOW TO PROUD to PRAY...and GIVE GOD THE HONOR and GLORY? I pray not. I pray they come together NOW, for God is a merciful God.
