Hindu-Christian Violence Kills 9 in India's Orissa State

Pasricha report - Listen (MP3)
In India's eastern Orissa State, spiraling violence between Hindus and Christians has killed at least nine people. From New Delhi, Anjana Pasricha reports on the religious tensions gripping the region.
Smoke rises from a church torched by hard-line Hindus in Muniguda in Phulbani District of India's Orissa state, 26 Aug 2008
Authorities issued shoot-at-sight orders and police staged marches Wednesday in Orissa's Kandhamal District, the region worst-hit by violence between Hindus and Christians.
Kandhamal is a primarily tribal area, where Christian missionaries have worked for decades. Almost 20 percent of the district's people are Christians.
The clashes erupted after the killing of a Hindu leader, Swami Laxmanananda Saraswati, and four others on Saturday by unidentified armed men. The Hindu leader had been leading a drive to reconvert local residents from Christianity to Hinduism.
Since then, angry Hindu mobs have attacked and damaged churches, Christian homes and an orphanage. Some of the victims were burned to death, when rioters set fire to their homes.
Police say rival groups from both communities have attacked each other with axes, sticks and guns, despite a curfew. New clashes occurred Wednesday.
Home Minister Shivraj Patil says the federal government has asked state authorities to protect all communities.
"We asked them to take stern action to protect the properties, the churches, the life and limbs of people and properties and houses of other people also," said Patil.
Police say the Hindu leader was killed by local Maoist rebels. But Hindus blame Christians for his death. He belonged to a hard-line Hindu group called the World Hindu Council.
This is not the first time that tensions have run high between Hindus and Christians in Orissa. In 1999, a Hindu mob killed an Australian missionary and his two sons by setting fire to their car.
Hard-line Hindu groups accuse Christian missionaries of trying to convert illiterate tribal or Hindu villagers by alluring them with promises of free education and medical care, a charge denied by the missionaries.
Christian organizations in India have asked the government to end the violence. Christians make up about two percent of India's population, which is predominantly Hindu.

Indian Christians Come Under Attack from Hindu Extremists
Contact: Loralei Coyle 202-682-4131, 202-905-6852 cell, lcoyle@ird-renew.org; Radio Interviews: Jeff Walton, jwalton@ird-renew.org; both with the Institute on Religion and Democracy
WASHINGTON, Aug. 29 /Christian Newswire/ -- Anti-Christian violence in India's Orissa State was further inflamed this past Saturday after suspected Maoists murdered a Hindu leader and four of his disciples. Radical Hindus, seeking to rid India of Christians, accused the tiny Christian community of the murders.
Reports from Compass Direct News Service say that Hindu extremists paraded the leader's body through villages to anger crowds and shouted, "Kill Christians and destroy their institutions."
Violent mobs have since destroyed churches, homes, orphanages and convents. Woman and young girls have been raped, while pastors, priests, nuns, and Christian lay people have been killed. On Friday, word came from Phulbani District--one of the worst affected areas of Orissa State--that the extremists have compiled a hit-list of Christian leaders to kill. They have already slain five pastors by sword and killed more than twenty-seven other Christians. The extremists have taken an oath to convert Christians to Hinduism by force or to kill all who will not renounce their faith in Christ.
In December Hindu extremists went on a ten-day rampage in Orissa State that began on Christmas Eve. The mob of nearly five thousand burned and destroyed 730 Christian homes and 102 churches in 83 villages. In that attack, at least four people were killed, and thousands fled.
IRD Director of Religious Liberty Programs Faith J.H. McDonnell commented,
"Reports IRD has received from Orissa State reveal that villages are empty. Christians have been forced to flee to the nearby mountains for safety.
"The gruesome violence is surreal in light of the natural beauty and seeming 'normality' of the area. It is all the more horrific that such barbarous actions and irrational cruelty could be occurring in a place whose tourism web sites urge you to visit Orissa's 'fun-filled fairs and festivals,' and 'drench yourself in fun' on Orissa's 'pristine beaches.'
"Our source says that neither the state nor central government, the Army or police forces, have been able to protect the Christians and bring them out of the mountains to a place of safety. He says that the extremists are 'openly moving in thousands with swords, axes, guns, grenades, sticks, spears, etc.,' and that the only way to help the Christians at present is to drop food packages and other relief aid by helicopter into the dense jungle."

Chinnim,
My prayers always go out to all of the Christians in India and other persecuted Nations. I went to India Nov 2005 and experienced some of this hardship first hand. I must say as an American, one can not fully understand the scope of the persecution until you are faced with it. I know that God will work through this as He always does. Thank you for enduring and trusting in our Savior for the sake of the little ones, the sick and the widowed.
In His Loving Hands,
Dee

INDIAN CHRISTIAN GROUPS CALLED FOR A DAY OF PRAYER AND FASTING
By Michael Ireland
Chief Correspondent, ASSIST News Service
ORISSA, INDIA (ANS) -- A Christian human rights organization has been monitoring the situation in Orissa, India and receiving status reports from those affected by what it calls "this massive outpouring of hate."
The Washington-DC based human rights group, International Christian Concern (ICC) www.persecution.org , received the following first-hand report from a believer in hiding in Kandhamal District, Orissa, India which contradicts the claims of the Indian government that the situation is under control.
Yesterday, ICC spoke with a Christian taking shelter in the middle of an area where Hindus are on a rampage against Christians. When ICC asked him how he was doing, he responded, "By God's grace I am still alive, but I do not know what will happen tonight."
ICC says that according to this eyewitness account, the last three days of violence have resulted in the deaths of 18 Christians that he knew of alone, including pastors, nuns, and Catholic priests. In addition, he said that Hindu radicals have demolished at least 75 churches and hundreds of houses belonging to Christians.
The ICC report says: "While the Indian government maintains that the situation is under control, our eyewitness says it is anything but. The main towns have received additional police protection, but in the rural areas there is nothing to stop Hindu mobs from looting, killing, raping, and destroying. In addition, the police have had their hands tied. The local government has prohibited them from firing on any mobs."
ICC spoke with this source at about 9:30pm local time (in India). At that moment, everything was quiet, but he said that the Hindus usually attack between 11pm and 4am. He said their only defense against another rampage is divine assistance.
Samuel Wallace, ICC's Regional Manager for South Asia, said, "It looks like the only defense these Christians have is God himself, because the Indian government has proved itself unable to stop the violence."
National Organization of Indian Christians Denounces Violence in Orissa
Meanwhile, in New Delhi, the National United Christian Forum (NUCF), a joint initiative of the Catholic Bishops Conference of India (CBCI), the National Council of Churches in India (NCCI) and the Evangelical Fellowship of India (EFI) to promote national level united action to address the critical concerns confronting the Christian community in the country, has denounced the communal violence that has erupted over the gruesome murder of a VHP leader -- Swami (a Hindu fundamentalist) and four others in Kandhamal district allegedly by Maoist groups (Terror groups).
In a statement released to the media, the group says: "While condemning the dastardly act of murder we appeal to one and all to maintain communal harmony and peace."
The statement goes on to say: "The Christians were not at all involved in the incident. Nevertheless, there have been already over 45 instances of violence, including the burning alive of at least five persons and over 300 in Rupagaon, Kandhamal."
Appealing to the Christian community, Archbishop Vincent M. Concessao, NUCF President, said, "As a mark of our solidarity with our suffering brothers and sisters and as a protest against all acts of communal violence and atrocities on the Christian community and other innocent people we request all our Christian schools, colleges and other educational institutions to be closed on Friday, August 29, 2008, and we wish that everywhere peaceful marches/rallies be conducted with black flags' demonstration in a truly prayerful spirit."
The group is also declaring Sunday, September 7, 2008 as a Day of Prayer and Fasting.
"We hope that all our dioceses, our churches, parish communities and all church institutions/organizations will hold prayer services and memorial gatherings on this day, highlighting the need for our solidarity with all the victims and pray for all our Missionaries in India, who are facing most trying and difficult times for the sake of the Gospel.
"We appeal to the Central and State governments to take strong measures to curb violence caused by any group in the country and urge all political, social and religious organizations to desist from spreading communal hated which has already taken a heavy toll in our country."
In a report obtained by ANS from Evangelical Fellowship of India News Service, the group details the list of Christian victims in the violent aftermath of the Hindu Swami's killing.
The list is published in full below.
