& Belle's portrayal of the claimed morality in this movie is hypocritical, and a diversion from the actual message in that department, I will explain: So yes, belle does dismiss Gaston for his "conceitedness" -- but does this naiveté excuse the fact that everyone else values belle AND gaston on their looks?

The three Bimbettes: "there he goes, isn't he dreamy?"
LeFou: "no ones got a swell cleft in his chin like gaston"
Belle's father: "how about that gaston? Hes a handsome fella"
Bimbettes "For there's no one as burly and brawny"
Gaston: "As you see iv'e got biceps to spare..."

Town singing: "it's a pity and a sin, she doesn't quite fit in, she's a beauty and a funny girl..."
(would they think it was a pity if she was deformed?)
Beast: "Ahh.. its no use, she's so beautiful and I'm... WELL LOOK AT ME!!"
Gaston: "She's the most beautiful girl in town... that makes her the best"

And come, the title is BEAUTY and the beast. I know this comes from a French fairy tale, yet that is no deterrent for the implications of this movie. That it is something remarkable that a beauty could come to love an ugly. That belle is an image perfection, innocence and intelligence. That belle turns down the perfect man of the village everyone else admires, yet gets the perfect model boyfriend with a subservant attitude anyway. I see this same message portrayed more subtly in Pocahontas, where she teaches the arrogant seaman her spiritual native wisdom and turns him into a loyal, admiring companion. She turns him into her dog lol.

Ne way, in b&tb, Its almost like Disney is saying: "this is the proper way to judge people... but that's not what anyone thinks." Keep in mind that in the end, the prince/beast ends up looking like a brother of gaston. Large prominent chin, high cheekbones, sculpted nose, tall frame, blue eyes even.

Back to gaston being dismissed by belle for arrogance. How can this be taken in context without noting the beast/princes arrogance? The beast who is "ashamed of his monstrous form" the beast who feels free to vent this anger on a young woman, attempting to force her to love him.

Yet with this, the crux of the story is that belles innocence, charm, and beauty (her looks do play a huge role in the beast's personality transformation, that is undeniable) turn an ---- into the perfect man. The role of perfection the gaston almost fit... the role that was good enough for everyone else- except belle.

This idolization of belle I believe is aimed at young girls in particular. I see this in belle's pedomorphic features: her huge eyes, small build, small pointy jaw, high voice, childish demeanor. And also in the scene at 4:51 early in the movie where belle nonchalantly strolls past a young girl playing jump rope and pats her on the head. Afterwards, the little girl turns her head and watches belle walk by. This little thing I believe is in the movie unnecessarily, to give additional standing to place belle in the minds of young girls as "someone who is kind to them as their sense of self" "someone to admire", and more obviously, a "role model". (lol: "model") And in this a relationship is established subtly between belle and young girls- keep in mind that while belle, in her perfect innocence, does not seem to notice that everyone values her on her looks, the young girls watching will.

Lets take the flagrant objectification of women in our society out of the equation for a moment- just focus on b&tb. So cutting out other variables that would otherwise support narcissism in women in our society- if b&tb ALONE was a key influence in a young girls life, then what is she supposed to do? Forget that everyone seemingly values her on her looks as belle does not seem to know? That she can turn down any man but the one she thinks she can force into the perfect man if she behaves properly?
No, if girls are copying belle's example- they will judge others and themselves subjectively to maintain and achive an objective image = internal conflict. Owch,

So to say: what do young girls walk away with inside themselves? The values CLAIMED or the values SHOWN?

It is funny that you should post this Dennis. A week or so ago my grandchilden were watching Mulan while I worked on the computer. It kept grabbing my attention with phrases like...."on the dark side of the moon," "you must bow down to me," "I'm on the rock," etc.

It was wrapped in pink ribbons...good vs. evil but it had an underlying poison about it.

Thanks for the link Dennis, I was suprised at how much stuff there is hidden in there! I wonder if it is deliberately put in or whether someone did it at the end?
To illustrate, let me just compare to our Aussie Ikea catalogue. It was released with a huge booboo, a disgruntled employee had changed one of the pics very subtley, so that the dog on one of the sofas had a big you-know-what. I am sure Ikea didn't notice, and the catalogue was released before they realised. How embarassing.
So is the work with all the hidden "sex" words done by sad little boys on work experience, or is it deliberate on the part of disney?

my children watch this stuff, and i point it out to them,,,,,,,,,,that way,,,,,,,they can see that the world is full of deceptions, lies, sinners, tricksters, etc

I was talking to my 5 year old boy about some of the signs, he then got very passionate about good signs and started trying to draw the cross in flourescent pen over the walls, it felt bad to stop him! He also tore up old skull and bones things with a vengence!
With the disney films, I don't know how far to take it. Problem is I like some of the films and have to wonder now whether we just get rid of them?

Pray for them... I used to be the one who'd watch desperate housewives, all sorts of stuff on the TV... that was until relatively recently. DH would go out of the room, but now I see what's going on. All the best x
