A few weeks ago I was being told I made up lies about King David as my mother told me years ago David Got syphilis in his lifetime. She found the scripture for me and I wanted to state that I never lied about King David.

David Admits he sinned Psalm 38:3 "There is no soundness in my flesh because of thine anger; neither is there any rest in my bones because of my sin"

David describes his symptoms 38:7 "For my loins are filled with a loathsome disease: and there is no soundness in my flesh"

Sounds like syphilis to me.

God is in charge of diseases to. King David did not have syphilis.

Isaiah 45
7 I form the light and create darkness, I make peace and create calamity; I, the Lord, do all these things.'

Deuteronomy 32
39 'Now see that I, even I, am He, And there is no God besides Me; I kill and I make alive; I wound and I heal; Nor is there any who can deliver from My hand.

If you read Psalms 38:13 & 14 you could come to the conclusion that David was deaf. But he wasn't ! Nor did he have a disease. Take note, that the word "disease is in italics. This tells you that it was added by man. The word "loathsome" should read "loathsomeness" = meaning = stink

Look at Numbers 11:19 & 20 - God is saying that you will eat for a month , until your nostrils (smell for food) will stink (loathsome). When one is hungry, then food smells so good, but when you are over full, then food stinketh (turns you stomach). The same is true with Psalm 38:7 , in that he had many wives and had much sex life, and it was thought of by David, as being an over abundance to the point it now stinketh.

While we will never know for sure and everything is open for interpretation--

Jeff Joseph has a valid interpretation given the fact:

* While many ancient cultures (no pun intended) recognized some medicinal effects of some molds, penicillin was not discovered until the ~1920s. and latex contraceptives were not invented yet (late 1800s). While its possible that king david had access to infection treatments, isn't mold and mildew at least in houses considered unclean?

* David had 6 wives and 'numerous' concubines (2 Samuel 5:13; 1 Chronicles 3:1-9, 14:3)

Can't take credit for the above, just pieced together...

Many theorize and diagnose ailments of historical figures using symptoms from doctor logs, personal diaries, etc.... Some suggest Lincoln had Marfan's (sp.?) syndrome. Some interesting discoveries have been made about Napoleon's death.

While some symptoms of syphillis include mental degeneration, I'm not going to go as far as to say that is why David was caught dancing naked... wink.gif

Psalms 38:13 & 14
This is referring to David acting as if he we being willingly deaf and not listening to God by sleeping around when he knew should not be doing that. See David was admitting that he was stupid for what he did and part of why God delivered him was because everytime he screwed up he repented and actually ment it.

The purpose of this being written is telling us not to make the same mistake David did in the first place. So you won't have to go and repent if you don't commit the sin in the first place.

If David did not get syphilis then why would all his lovers stay away from him? The answer is they didn't want to get infected from him.

You are reading WAAAAAAAAAAAY too much in that verse. How can you jump to such a conclusion? Were you there? Are you a doctor??? Did you diagnos David? Your accusations are grievious and unfounded. Not only that, but the point you are attempting to prove serves no good purpose.

Sorry Jeff, its all conjecture on your part !

Jeff, look at Psalm 38:8 & 9 - "I am feebel and sore broken: I have roared by reason of the disquietness of my heart" - "Lord, all my desire is before thee; and my groaning is not hid from thee" and now verse 10 - "My heart panteth, my strength faileth me: as for the light of mine eyes, it also is gone from me" <-- David is not getting weak, nor blind, literally. What David is saying, is that he lets his desires make his strength fail and his eyes don't see his desires as being wrong. His lovers and his friends and kinsmen stand far from him. David was a great King with a lot of power. If he said off with someone's head, they would loose their head. So people did not want to wrong David in any way. However, they also want to stop David, or correct David, but would not try. They just stayed far from David. However David's enemies wanted to do harm to David, and David wanted God to forgive him and watch over him, so that his enemies who want to render evil for good would not harm him. Now read Psalm 39:1 thru verse 3 which reveals exactly the reason for everything said in chapter 38

Right on Mysteryman.....context!!!

I noticed how you avoided answering the scriptures I gave and worked your way around them with your "worldy philosphical context". If you want don't want to listen then go right ahead.

Jeff:

If David had syphilis, then why would his "kinsmen" and "friends" stay away from him ? David was not having sex with his kinsmen nor his friends !
Come on Jeff, open your eyes and see what is written, instead of what you want to see ! There is too much of this type of reading the Word of God !

Who do you think deceives ?

First I wanted to say I have thouroly reda Psalms 38 and 39.

Because he was diseased and they all knew it. Most of them probably thought they would get infected being to close or touthing him as many people probably didn't know what was wrong with him. If he did not have syphilis then why is he telling God in Psalm 39 if he doesn't help him he will die from this?''

8Save me from all my transgressions;
do not make me the scorn of fools.

9 I was silent; I would not open my mouth,
for you are the one who has done this.

10 Remove your scourge from me;
I am overcome by the blow of your hand.

13 Look away from me, that I may rejoice again
before I depart and am no more."

It cleary sounds to me like David sinned and hes admiited this to God. Then hes suffering and begging God for mercy. His friends and lovers are all afriad to come close to him for fear being infected from his sores and puss coming out of him. It tells what his suffering is like wich sounds very much like syphilis. David admits if God does not spare him he will die.

Ulitmatley God frees him because David went on living and did not die from this disease.

I am not going to continue with your ignorance. I already told you that the word "disease" is in italics. That is clear that it was added later by man within the translations, and is not a part of the original manuscripts.

These scriptures (context) is not about David's disease. Its about his enemies and the respect of the power of David as King. David knows that the enemy of David can use this against him, and will do so, if God does not step in to help David.

Your totally missing the message here Jeff !
