Speaking in Tongues: A Sign for Nonbelievers

What advantage would one gain if a word is spoken and no one understood what was being said? The word spoken would not benefit anyone, correct? Some individuals in the church community believe unidentifiable speech is a sign from God, even saying that it is a requirement for salvation. Yet, I Corinthians the 14th chapter in the 33rd verse it states, “God is not the author of confusion.” What is the opposite of confusion? Something that is clear or easy to understand. After reading through this study, one will see that there is no confusion in the Bible on the above topic. But, those that do not read the Bible and tell others that they must speak in an unknown tongue to receive salvation; they are in the state of confusion.

Let’s begin this study in Acts the 2nd chapter, at the first verse and see if we can get a clear understanding of what happened on the day of Pentecost.

And when the day of Pentecost was fully come, they were all with one accord in one place. And suddenly there came a sound from heaven as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting. (Acts 2: 1-2)
Here the apostles are observing the Day of Pentecost, and suddenly a rushing mighty wind came in to the house. So, what exactly is this rushing mighty wind? It has to be some type of note worthy information or it would not be in the verse. Let’s see if we can find an example in the Word of God, of a “rushing mighty wind.”

In the next set of scriptures David inquires of God, asking, should he go out to war against the Philistines? Take note of what takes place after the Lord informs David what he should do.

And the Philistines yet again spread themselves abroad in the valley. Therefore David inquired again of God; and God said unto him, Go not up after them; turn away from them, and come upon them over against the mulberry trees. And it shall be, when thou shalt hear a sound of going in the tops of the mulberry trees, that then thou shalt go out to battle: for God is gone forth before thee to smite the host of the Philistines. (1 Chronicles 14: 13-15)

Note what’s being stated, “When thou shalt hear a sound of going in the tops of the mulberry trees, that then thou shalt go out to battle.” In other words, when you hear a rushing mighty wind in the top of the mulberry trees go out against them. Let’s take a look at another example before we find out who, or what this wind is. Take note!

The wind bloweth where it listeth, and thou hearest the sound thereof, but canst not tell whence it cometh, and whither it goeth: so is every one that is born of the Spirit. (John 3: 8)

Jesus gives an excellent example as usual. Everyone that is born of the spirit is like the wind, we can hear the sound of the wind, but we cannot tell where it came from or where it’s going.

In other words we cannot see the wind nor can we see a spirit, unless they want to be seen. But, Acts the second chapter tells us exactly where the rushing mighty wind came from and that was Heaven. So, we have just learned something, meaning a spirit is like the wind.

In other words we cannot see the wind nor can we see a spirit, unless they want to be seen. But, Acts the second chapter tells us exactly where the rushing mighty wind came from and that was Heaven. So, we have just learned something, meaning a spirit is like the wind. Now, let’s look at the third verse in Acts 2.

And there appeared unto them cloven tongues like as of fire, and it sat upon each of them. (Acts 2:3)
So, once the wind came in, there appeared unto them cloven tongues of fire and it sat by each one of them. Cloven tongues like as of fire? What could that possibly be? Let’s cut to the chase and find out exactly what this is. Take note.

Bless the Lord, O my soul. O Lord my God, thou art very great; thou art clothed with honour and majesty. Who coverest thyself with light as with a garment: who stretchest out the heavens like a curtain: Who layeth the beams of his chambers in the waters: who maketh the clouds his chariot: who walketh upon the wings of the wind: Who maketh his angels spirits; his ministers a flaming fire: (Psalms 104: 1-4)

Remember, Jesus states in St. John the third chapter in the 8th verse, “The wind bloweth, thou hearest the sound thereof, but canst not tell whence it cometh: so is every one that is born of the Spirit". In Acts chapter 2 in the 3rd verse it states, “And there appeared unto them cloven tongues like as of fire. The 104th Psalms states, “Who maketh his angels spirits; his ministers a flaming fire". Therefore, the rushing mighty wind and the tongues of fire, were simply a large number of angels coming into the house. Now, let’s return to the 2nd chapter of Acts and pick up where we left off.

And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance. (Acts 2: 4)

They were filled with the Holy Ghost and began to speak with other tongues. Here is the key, “the spirit gave them utterance". Remember the angels are the spirits that arrived in the house in the form of fiery tongues. So, it was the angels that gave them the act of speaking. Note this in the above verse, “They were all filled with the Holy Ghost.” Does this mean something entered their bodies? No! Here is an example of a spirit (or angel) giving an individual utterance.

And when they had prayed, the place was shaken where they were assembled together; and they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and they spake the word of God with boldness. (Acts 4: 31)

Note what the verse states, “they were all filled with the Holy Ghost.” Once they were filled with the Holy Ghost, what did they do? They spake the word of God with boldness! Therefore in the case of Acts 2:4, the “Holy Ghost is the Word of God. Let’s return to Acts chapter 2, pick up where we left off.

And there were dwelling at Jerusalem Jews, devout men, out of every nation under heaven. Now when this was noised abroad, the multitudes came together, and were confounded, because that every man heard them speak in his own language. (Acts 2: 5-6)

Note what the verses states, “Every man heard them speak in his own language.” Here is more note worthy information in the above verses. There were dwelling at Jerusalem Jews, devout men, out of every nation under heaven. In other words, there were “Jews” only in this assembly from every nation under heaven. Now, read the next two verses carefully and see the tongue or language that was spoken was understood perfectly.

And they were all amazed and marveled, saying one to another, Behold, are not all these which speak Galileans? And how hear we every man in our own tongue, wherein we were born? (Acts 2: 7-8)

How did every man hear them (Apostles/Galileans) speak in his own language (or tongue)? Suddenly there came a sound from heaven as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting. And there appeared unto them cloven tongues like as of fire, and it sat upon each of them. And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance, and they spake the word of God with boldness. Therefore the angles were the interrupters for the whole assembly. That’s why a cloven tongue sat by each one of them. So, Peter stood up as the spirit gave him utterance and quoted the Word of God to the Israelites that were present. Peter quoted the Prophet Joel, take note!

And they were all amazed, and were in doubt, saying one to another, What meaneth this? Others mocking said, These men are full of new wine. But Peter, standing up with the eleven, lifted up his voice, and said unto them, Ye men of Judaea, and all ye that dwell at Jerusalem, be this known unto you, and hearken to my words: For these are not drunken, as ye suppose, seeing it is but the third hour of the day. But this is that which was spoken by the prophet Joel; And it shall come to pass in the last days, saith God, I will pour out of my Spirit upon all flesh: and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams: And on my servants and on my handmaidens I will pour out in those days of my Spirit; and they shall prophesy: And I will shew wonders in heaven above, and signs in the earth beneath; blood, and fire, and vapour of smoke: The sun shall be turned into darkness, and the moon into blood, before that great and notable day of the Lord come: And it shall come to pass, that whosoever shall call on the name of the Lord shall be saved. (Acts 2: 12-21)

ozell

Let’s see what Peter quoted.

And it shall come to pass afterward, that I will pour out my spirit upon all flesh; and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, your old men shall dream dreams, your young men shall see visions: And also upon the servants and upon the handmaids in those days will I pour out my spirit. And I will shew wonders in the heavens and in the earth, blood, and fire, and pillars of smoke.

The sun shall be turned into darkness, and the moon into blood, before the great and the terrible day of the Lord come. And it shall come to pass, that whosoever shall call on the name of the Lord shall be delivered: for in mount Zion and in Jerusalem shall be deliverance, as the Lord hath said, and in the remnant whom the Lord shall call. (Joel 2: 28-32)

Peter quoted the Prophet Joel! If we were to read the remaining of this chapter we would see that Peter also quoted the Prophet David (Psalm 16:8-11) beginning at the 25th verse and ending at the 28th verses of Acts chapter 2. He did not speak an unidentifiable language; he uttered clear speech and every man understood what he said. So, let’s recap what we have just learn.

In the 1st verse of Acts chapter 2 we see the Disciples observing the day of Pentecost.

Notice they continued to keep the High Sabbaths after the death and the ascension of the Lord. If an individual call them self a follower of Christ one should also observer this day along with the other High and Holy Days. In the second verse we saw the angels come into the house. In the third verse the angles took the form of cloven tongues of fire, and sat by each one of them. In the fourth verse the angels gave them the word of God and they spoke it with boldness.

Now, that we see that the words spoken by the apostles was a language that was understood clearly, let’s see what our beloved brother Paul have to say about this subject. We will begin in the 14th chapter of first Corinthians at the first verse. Pay close attention to the first verse!

Follow after charity, and desire spiritual gifts, but rather that ye may prophesy. (1 Corinthians 14:1)

Note what Paul says, “but rather that ye may prophesy.” What did Peter do in Acts 2? He prophesied and gave those that were in the assembly edification! Let’s continue.

For he that speaketh in an unknown tongue speaketh not unto men, but unto God: for no man understandeth him; howbeit in the spirit he speaketh mysteries. (1 Corinthians 14:2)

Note Paul states, “he that speak in an unknown tongue speak not to men but to God.” What could Paul mean by this? Let’s go to Genesis chapter eleven and find out.

And the whole earth was of one language, and of one speech. And it came to pass, as they journeyed from the east, that they found a plain in the land of Shinar; and they dwelt there. And they said one to another, Go to, let us make brick, and burn them thoroughly. And they had brick for stone, and slime had they for morter. And they said, Go to, let us build us a city and a tower, whose top may reach unto heaven; and let us make us a name, lest we be scattered abroad upon the face of the whole earth. And the Lord came down to see the city and the tower, which the children of men build. And the Lord said, Behold, the people is one, and they have all one language; and this they begin to do: and now nothing will be restrained from them, which they have imagined to do. Go to, let us go down, and there confound their language, that they may not understand one another's speech.

So the Lord scattered them abroad from thence upon the face of all the earth: and they left off to build the city. Therefore is the name of it called Babel; because the Lord did there confound the language of all the earth: and from thence did the Lord scatter them abroad upon the face of all the earth. (Genesis 11:1-9)

Ahhhh, now we should understand what Paul meant when He stated, “He that speaketh in an unknown tongue speaketh not unto men, for no man understandeth him.” Paul simply meant, “he that speaks in a language that is not known to the individual that is being spoken to, will not understand what’s being said.

ozell

We will see this more perfectly as we continue in the 14th chapter of first Corinthians. Let’s take another look at the 1 Corinthians 14:2.

For he that speaketh in an unknown tongue speaketh not unto men, but unto God: for no man understandeth him; howbeit in the spirit he speaketh mysteries. (1 Corinthians 14:2)

Note what Paul states at the end of this verse, “howbeit in the spirit he speaketh mysteries.” Remember, the subject is speaking to someone in a language that’s not known to the individual that is listening. The word spirit in this verse is the key. Note Paul states that God understands what’s being said because God changed their language (Gen 11:9). So, what does Paul mean by all this? Let’s read further and see if we can figure this out.

But he that prophesieth speaketh unto men to edification, and exhortation, and comfort. He that speaketh in an unknown tongue edifieth himself; but he that prophesieth edifieth the church. (1 Corinthians 14:3-4)

Paul states in verses two, “he that speaketh in an unknown tongue speaketh not unto men, howbeit in the spirit he speaketh mysteries.” In the two verses above we have a little more information. Paul states in the 4th verse, “He that speaketh in an unknown tongue edifieth himself!” In other words, if an individual speaks in a foreign language (or tongue) to another individual, the person that is speaking imparts wisdom to him or herself, not the individual who is listening.

Therefore the words uttered are a mystery (something not understood) to the person who is in an earshot.

Let’s continue in this chapter.

I would that ye all spake with tongues; but rather that ye prophesied: for greater is he that prophesieth than he that speaketh with tongues, except he interpret, that the church may receive edifying. Now, brethren, if I come unto you speaking with tongues, what shall I profit you, except I shall speak to you either by revelation, or by knowledge, or by prophesying, or by doctrine? (1 Corinthians 14:5-6)

Note what Paul says, “I would that ye all spake with tongues; but, rather ye prophesied for greater is he that prophesieth than he that speaketh with tongues, except he interpret”. Thus if there is no interpreter, the language spoken will not profit the hearer. Remember, Paul is the Apostle to the Gentiles. So, being that Paul was a Hebrew Israelite and his native tongue (or language) was Hebrew, he interpreted the word of God in the Corinthian’s natural tongue. Thus he edified the church.

In the next few verses Paul gives examples of some things that gives clear and unmistakable illustrations, and if the warning is not understood its sound is good for nothing.

And even things without life giving sound, whether pipe or harp, except they give a distinction in the sounds, how shall it be known what is piped or harped? For if the trumpets give an uncertain sound, who shall prepare himself to the battle? (I Corinthians 14:7-8)

PAY CLOSE ATTENTION TO THE NEXT THREE VERSES!

So likewise ye, except ye utter by the tongue words easy to be understood, how shall it be known what is spoken? for ye shall speak into the air. There are, it may be, so many kinds of voices in the world, and none of them is without signification. Therefore if I know not the meaning of the voice, I shall be unto him that speaketh a barbarian, and he that speaketh shall be a barbarian unto me. (I Corinthians 14:9-11)

That was extremely clear don’t you think? Thus far we have seen that Paul reiterates that if a word is spoken in the church, all should understand what is being said. And if one speaks in a foreign language, have another to interpret or it will not profit the assembly. (For God is not the author of confusion, but of peace, as in all churches of the saints.

1 Corinthians 14: 33) Let’s take a look at one more set of verses. Pay close attention to what is being said.

In the law it is written, With men of other tongues and other lips will I speak unto this people; and yet for all that will they not hear me, saith the Lord. Wherefore tongues are for a sign, not to them that believe, but to them that believe not: but prophesying serveth not for them that believe not, but for them which believe.(1 Corinthians 14:21-22)

In conclusion, tongues are for a sign to them that believe not. For the Bible tells us that "an evil and adulterous generation seeketh after a sign" (Matthew 12:39), but prophesying is for believers of the Bible.

May the Lord add a blessing to the reading of His word, in Jesus' name A-men.

It just can't be more clear to me, yet my cousin insists that until I speak Jibberish, I'm not yet saved. I told her these verses in a simplified version over the phone. When her and I pray for our families, she also prays in Jibberish, yet we have both seen those prayers answered in God's time.

you have to read between the lines to under stand why paul said what he said

this has caused grief and has caused division among us i read what paul had to say to the christians in cornith i have also heard christians say to new christians that speaking in tounges is of the devil which is rubbish

you need to understand the reason to what paul had to say concerning 1 corinthians 14

i use my spiritual language does that mean that i am disobeying what paul is saying to the cornith church ?

what paul observed was spot on he also saw that the men were arguing among them selves they were not discipled propely and it was paul who had to pull them up

no were in 1 corinthians 14 does paul say we should not speak in tongues when we come together on sunday morning

also look at acts when they were all together the holy spirit fell on them if this is not of god the disciples would not have spoken in tongues when the holy spirit fell on them

i also hear christians saying the reason i dont want to speak in tongues is due to not wanting to offend god as i do not know if by what i am saying is offending or cursing god

when i cant pray i speak in tongues for half an hour this helps me and ther are days i cant pray

also speaking in tongues prevents the enemy from understanding what your spirit is saying to god

If someone was trully speaking in tongues(tongues of fire) It would be just like Pentecost and everyone,,,, no-matter where there from or what language they speak would be able to understand....That is from God

All that blblbalallcblabbbclabvchdjgfb is a joke,,,,its people feeling holy,,,, or just unedifying in itself.....

i gave you scripture stating what paul also said and he said do not discourage any one from speaking in tongues

it cant be were one camp is right and the other camp is wrong

i tend not to just look at sevral passages and ignore al off 1 corinthians 14

if this was the case it would have been rejected and pastors and bible collages would be discouraging any one from speaking in tongues to the point were 1 corinthians 14 verse 39 would be taken out of all the translations or new translations would be printed

do some reading instead of just holding on to the early passages to were you see paul pulling the cornith church up why would paul blast the guys and then say what he said in verse 39 ?

its just like the serpent seed argument were satan was to have sex with eve i dont bite into that rubbish other wise it would be written and we would all see it for our selves to what really brought the fall in the garden

reading between the line is not a good idea when reading God's word. God say what he wants and means what he says.

I was recently at an event...The kind of event l don't normally attend. Two rows in front of me sat a man. He began to weep, I could tell the Spirit was coming over him. I don't do charismatic groups so it was unusual for me to be there and observe. He began to speak aloud in tongues and a few moments later some one gave what they thought was the interpretation..It was something generic and didn't match what l saw coming from this man.

Something l've always wondered about tongues:

People constantly talk to themselves. Can they hear the Lord speak even if he hollered into there spirits? What if tongues where simple a way to get certain people to turn off the internal dialogue long enough to hear God.....then tongues would be gibberish with a purpose.

Later in the hallway l introduced myself to this man...I notice he had hearing aids in both ears. He began to tell me about his life...non stop. I couldn't get a word in edgewise... even though politely waiting to speak. Even when l spoke he just rambled over the top of my words. He was rather rude.

Was this a confirmation to my thinking? I wonder. God loves this man. I have no doubt the Spirit came on him and he began to speak...But the interpretation wasn't there according to the witness l didn't feel in my spirit.. Some people are just hard of hearing when it comes to spiritual things but God gives them a lesser gift? I don't know that for sure but l've wondered about it.

We are not talking about the serpent's seed and just because you dont understand that trees represent people and the word seed means sperm is your bad not mine,,,I can care less on what you bite on....If we were to discuss it with hebrew and scripture along with idioms and figures of speech,,,you might understand,,,but sadly you dont understand any of those things,,,,,

So on to this topic,,,you are either lying or you just dont know the word ---- so please show where Paul said not to discourage anyone from speaking in babel....

I Corinthians 14:39 "Wherefore, brethren, covet to prophesy, and forbid not to speak with tongues."

We should desire to teach others. We are also not to forbid an interpreter to follow a teacher that is teaching in another language. But whatever method and process that the teaching takes, let it be done with order, and deliver the message with dignity.

You have been mis-lead to thing "tongues" means that babel that people are talking to God in a mystery where satan cant understand,,,,yeah I use to be a member of a pentecostal church dude,,,I know all about it.....

What a joke if it was really spiritual it would be like pentecost day and everyone would understand......

I totally agree,,,a bunch of people jumping around falling down and babeling,,,,there trying to act like there filled with the spirit and many of them are,,just not the right one,,,,like I said earlyier if It were real we we all understand it in our on language just like the day of pentecost......

I pray in what some call jibberish because it makes no sense to them and I have been blessed in speaking and I have had many prophetic downloads as a consequence. As in all things spiritual there is always another suspect and another adhoc disqualification based upon pretense and supposition of error. Yet God does move in this way. It is praying to God not to men in the first place....1Co 14:2 For he that speaketh in an [unknown] tongue speaketh not unto men, but unto God: for no man understandeth [him]; howbeit in the spirit he speaketh mysteries.

I am glad we have now among us a new edifier...telling us we are all wrong. I guess I am just one of those dispicable old gentile church types....having no hope or promise of salvation. Woe is me. An unknown tongue is just that...unknown..it is not a language from another earthly civilization....

I don't feel it is babbling. I also got baptised in the Pentecostal Church full of loving people and I came out of the water speaking in tongues. I go on faith that it is my 'babbling' that is actually dialogue with the Holy Spirit because we know not what to ask for... so the Holy Spirit speaks for us in a language that God can understand and speaks to the Lord what we really need. Like Maz, I also have been totally blessed by it and also given much knowledge. So I wouldn't discount it... I think you need to really understand it more.. even take a poll... smile.gif Just kidding! I didn't do too well with that! wink.gif

Regards and no offense meant.. just study it out and listen to what others have to say. smile.gif

Yes it is not babbling...it is an unknown tongue. That makes it sound like babbling to an unlearned ear. And the "words" are of a cadence and a timing and a sequence and at times of a repetition that takes on a symetry of communioin...I find my mind is always "purring" with it...almost continually...it is right now...and it is unto my edification...so I guess I have a "not real" mind...by someone else's estimation...but the lights are on and somene is home thankyou...
Humble Bob
Speaking in tongues by the Spirit is a gift from the Spirit that some people have and some people do not have. Each have different gifts from the Spirit.

I don't have the gift of tongues.
IrishRose
Well, that is true, Humble Bob... the gifts are not for everyone and the Lord gives to whom He desires. Amen!

See below, I have answered Nightmare's question about there being two types of 'tongues' though. smile.gif
NIGHTMARE
Yes tongues is a gift of God,,,,also it canted be faked it allows me to speak to every ear no matter what language they speak and here..... The tongues you guys are talking about is not that and you know it,,,,find one place in the bible where people spoke that babel nonsense that you are refering to,,,you cant.... All you will find is in the book of acts where they are speaking the tongues im talking about.....
IrishRose
There are two different types of 'tongues'.. one is a prayer language that you speak to God with, and that is not for others to understand. Then there is the gift of tongues with understanding, as when someone has a prophecy or word to speak in church and there is interpretation right after.... then the understanding follows. The tongues that are used to talk to God are not the "gift" that is used in a church setting or for others to understand. It is in the Bible that Paul spoke in tongues to edify. Then there are also the Gifts of the Spirit as well. There is a difference. One is private, one is public. Hope this helps!

Act 19:6 And when Paul had laid his hands upon them, the Holy Spirit came on them; and they spake with tongues, and prophesied.

That happened when I was baptized in the HS. Some pastors and laymen at a men's group figured I had been a Christian long enough to be baptized so they gathered around, layed their hands on me and prayed for the baptism.

Impartation of the HS comes by the laying on of hands, through others, to another, but, laying on of hands isn't always necessary.

When it happened to me, it wasn't like the loud stuff you hear or see people doing sometimes, just, the Spirit flowing. It was more of a sign for them I think that the HS had been imparted. I was thinking at the same time it was happening. It was odd because, my mind was observing what was happening and I was aware what was coming out of me wasn't from me, or, my mind I should say, but, something flowing through me. It was very quick and peaceful. I believe the pastor's did it correctly and in the right time.

All tongues is is a spirit speaking through someone. Of course, there are all kinds of spirits. I'm sure the enemy can mimick that. But, I don't think that people should steer away from it because of that. I've only seen the gift of tongues in a congregation a few times. I believe both times someone came with an interpretation though. Everything is supposed to be orderly.

wink.gif
IrishRose
Researcher, I felt the same as you... I didn't scream or yell, fall down or writhe on the floor. It was all done quite orderly and I felt like the Spirit was moving through me. It was peaceful, I felt so much love and a presence I never had or ever did before since then. I do believe that there is the good and the bad in this, like you said, the enemy can mimic anything... but I do believe that there is more good than bad, at least from what I have seen and I have seen a lot. smile.gif

And here is a Scripture that is NOT in Acts about tongues... you asked for proof. smile.gif

Mark 16:17 (New International Version)

17And these signs will accompany those who believe: In my name they will drive out demons; they will speak in new tongues;
LoisFaith2000

"Speak to one another with psalms, hymns and spiritual songs. Sing and make music in your heart to the Lord, always giving thanks to God the Father for everything, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ."
Ephesians 5:19,20 NIV

"Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly as you teach and admonish one another with all wisdom, and as you sing psalms, hymns and spiritual songs with gratitude in your hearts to God. And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him."
Colossians 3:16,17 NIV

“So what shall I do? I will pray with my spirit, but I will also pray with my mind; I will sing with my spirit, but I will also sing with my mind."
1 Corinthians 14:15 NIV

"My Beloved, it is time for My children to learn to sing their praises to Me as I have put forth in My Word. I am not speaking only of the hymns of old but also songs and hymns and spiritual songs which my Holy Spirit will reveal to you in an instant. I AM speaking of singing in the Spirit, the language of angels, a language of freedom, unencumbered by the bonds and languages of this earth. I urge you, and command you, to allow your hearts and voices to be free and to sing to Me in the Spirit. I promise you, you will find a freedom previously unknown to you, and a joy deep in your spirit

"As time goes on and unity grows in the churches, there will be times of wonderful praise when My children will sing to Me in the Spirit, singing a song none of them have ever heard, nor ever practiced, and that song will come instantly to them, spontaneously, and in that unity of high praise, I will come among them, and move among them, touching their hearts in special ways and do great signs and wonders for and among My people. They will sing unto Me symphonies of high praise, in tongues and in melodies yet unheard on this earth. When My children allow their voices to truly sing freely to Me, they will find a joy which will stay with them for the rest of their days.

"I know this is strange to you, My Beloved. The majority of My children still do not even believe in the baptism of My Holy Spirit, nor the gifts which come afterward. They are like a people with an empty weapon, using sticks and rocks and dead traditions against a 'nuclear' enemy. I say to you to be patient with them, for you are very much blessed if you have discovered the wonders of being filled with My Holy Spirit. I say to you, you have not even begun to see true wonders, and the time is coming when My Spirit will flow in ways which will show a prelude of what your Homecoming will be. Now, I say to you, walk with Me and be led of My Spirit and find that freedom which awaits you," says the Lord.

Amen! I went to a bible study in my early christian walk and a young man was teaching exactly what you are saying Rose...and I ended up marrying him! LOL

I speak in tongues, but I don't have the same degree of faith that my husband has in that department. What I have found though is when we pray in this manner, our faith is stirred and we are more apt to receive the comfort of God's Spirit along with understandings.

God bless you sis,

Some of the most gifted-tongue-speaking people I have ever met, also, were the most un-loving I have met! I believe in tongues; but, I don't think it is all that necessary. However, I have heard that when we get to heaven, and we don't speak in tongues, they will teach us. I also believe that the gifts are for the building up of the body of Christ. If we have a gift and don't use it, ??????
I mean that to enhance the gift, we must use it; because the gifts are without repentance. God doesn't take them back.

use that gift that is within you! If you have the gift of "helps".......use it!

Don't be a scoffer! A choice to enter in and partake of the blessing, or choose the curse. The Fruits and the Gifts in the Kingdom will be so present that they will be undeniable, bringing Love that exposes all darkness. Many will have a choice to enter in and deny themselves, or they will choose their own way bringing hardness of heart, continueing to mock the very gifts of God in the Word of God! These are they who proclaim...."only the Word/only the Word". Yet, they cut out so many scriptures, it is ridiculous. The Word is the roadmap to our desination and without each verse, how can we get there!

How many verses are you tearing out of your Bible???????

thanks sister

i am just seeing were this topic goes their have been debates over this very issue not just on christian forums

i sat in sevral lectures when i was young and i heard two proffesores argue this out in front of new christians and mature christians

i got invited to go by a close friend of mine and i said yes i would like to these guys wer very bright they went over acts they even went over the new testament and came back to what happend in the upper room

today we have christians that seem to like to doubt what happend in the upper room and their are christians also that tend to not guide new christians like i have been taught by my pastor and the spiritual mentors that took me into their home

when the spirit fell on me i freaked out no one prayed that i receive this gift but the people who came to my baptisem all prayed and every one of them speaked in tongues including my pastor and my spiritual mentors

i asked nightmare and ozell to tell my why paul said not to discourage anyone from speaking in tongues concerning what 1 corinthians 14 verse 39 has to say on this subject that ozell has brought up in his post

al i see is fear and doubt concerning what people are leaving

yes some people dont have this gift but ther are others that do have this gift given to them by god

we should not reject those that have received this gift

i also looked into this for my self my pastor was very open with me when i questioned him concerning speaking in tongues

we have new inmates who attend the bible study my father in law runs and the filapino prisoners are doing a study on this

when i shared my testimony to the prisoners when i was in the philippines early this year the lord moved in a power full way the young men that came down the front said the sinners prayer and the next day they were baptised we did not do it were the prisoners could not see what these brothers were about to do the warden turned up and the gaurds were there as well with there familys

the guys that gave their lives to god were all thugs and drug dealers one guy was up for rape and murder these dear brothers are using the gifts god has given them and they are not being told that speaking in tounges is of the devil

like i am hearing concerning weather we are to speak in tongues

this is one of my subjects i like discussing sit back and just watch what is put up hear concerning weather christians today are to speak in tongues or seek this gift

you cant focus on what happend in the past and say that is the true gift to what happend to the disciples

i am not educated like nightmare or ozell i did not go threw bible collage gods spirit challanged me when i was reading the bible in the prison farm i found my self in

i am in regular contac with a croation pastor who runs an aog church not far from where i am living know al the members that go to the aog church are serbians and croations there are also sevral greeks and italians and 7 irish people attending the sunday service he does the service in my language in the morning and an english service at the evening service

i lost my language and picked the australian language up i was only 6yrs old when we came to australia and i wish i never let go of my origonal tongue

the two men who heard me pray in my own language started to talk to me in croation i could under stand them but i could not translate to my pastor what they were saying though my pastor called up a friend of his and he met us and we were able to lead these men to the lord they said they heard everything i said when we were praying for the area and asking god for his favor i was only a new christian though my pastor wanted me to come out on out reach with him he ecnouraged me to use the gifts god has given me

i tend to avoid christians who doubt what we read concerning what happend in the upper room and as i said what happend in the upper room stil happens today we just need to be open and not put up walls

Look at it like this,,,,you say all speaking in tongues is -- is a spirit speaking through you,,,,,but the only spirit you want speaking through you is the holy spirit....Well that poses a big problem because when the holy spirit speaks through you,,,everyone can understand......

There are two types of tongues mentioned in the bible:::::

1 is just languages thats easy 2 is the one that was spoken in acts....Also I have spoken what you would call tongues, so I have played the game before....

thats your view but dont jump the gun or point the finger and come down on brethren like my self who have also studied and looked into it for our selves

i gave you scripture stating what paul also said and he said do not discourage any one from speaking in tongues

it cant be were one camp is right and the other camp is wrong

i tend not to just look at sevral passages and ignore al off 1 corinthians 14

if this was the case it would have been rejected and pastors and bible collages would be discouraging any one from speaking in tongues to the point were 1 corinthians 14 verse 39 would be taken out of all the translations or new translations would be printed

do some reading instead of just holding on to the early passages to were you see paul pulling the cornith church up why would paul blast the guys and then say what he said in verse 39 ?

its just like the serpent seed argument were satan was to have sex with eve i dont bite into that rubbish other wise it would be written and we would all see it for our selves to what really brought the fall in the garden

What a joke if it was really spiritual it would be like pentecost day and everyone would understand......

eyes to see ears to here.............

so when i came out of jail in 1988 and found my self in a unitting church you are trying to tell me that a demonic spirit is clinging to me
by you saying i have been mis lead tells me you only tend to hear what you want to hear and think we all should take a good look at what happend at penticost and if any christian tends to use these gifts it has to be like what happend at penticost where the non believers understood what the disciples were saying when the holy spirit fell on them

do you feel that i need your wisdom by what i am picking up nightmare you think that i dont understand what i am reading concerning the translations i have in my own home and what i have seen god do not just behind clossed doors but out side

i did not seek this or did i pray for this but when i got baptized it happend around midnight and my spiritual mentors who took me into there home told me not to reject this

i have ran into people like your self hear where i live where they have disrupted services and challanged the pastors

these christians who feel that this is not off god need to take a close look

what happend at penticost still happens today

and i use my natural language

for example i was out on out reach and i was praying with my pastor and sevral of the guys two men came up to us saying they wanted to give their hearts to the lord one guy said he wanted me to pray for them in croation as they were from my country since i have been living in Australia i lost my language and picked this language these guys heard me praying in my own natural language which blew me away as i can only understand my people when i hear a yugoslavian speak

so you tell me am i telling a white lie hear by what i have left since you feel that i am un educated and need to be pulled up to where i listen to you and denounce this

this is both to nightmare and ozell

what puzzles me you have the bible saying one thing and then humans saying another thing its like you tend to reject what god does in peoples lives and tend to focus on past events

i cant speak my natural language at all i lost it when i hear my people speak i find it hard to communicate to my own country men boy how i wish i never lost my natural language but when we moved to australia i had to pick this language up

this has happend sevral times were we have been praying and the spirit has fallen on me to were my country men have heard me pray in my own natural language only know am i learning to speak my natural language

when the spirit fell on me at midnight i freaked out i felt peace full but i rejected what was happening my two close friends who took me into their home told me not to be afraid

yes people can put it on we have plenty of con men but when gods spirit falls on a person like my self or what i saw when i was speaking in the jails in the philippines who are you to tell me that i am faking it ?

God bless from damo smile.gif

Dude its a joke,,,,everything is for edification of the church,,,you babeling does nothing for anyone, except probley makes you feel special....Im not interested in your jail storys, only the word of God......And we both know you cant prove what your saying form the bible,,,,,Paul is speaking about languages not babeling but believe as you will.....

Well then I see that thousands are believing a joke...that has a great punch line....

Nightmare

so is this how this topic is going to pan out were we have special people like your self and ozell telling the rest of us not to seek this gift due to it not being as genuine as to what happend in the upper room ?

i know what paul was saying i want you and ozell to tel me were in 1 corinthians 14 does paul discourage the belivers from seeking this gift and you have been given scripture passages

including what paul said in 1 corinthians 14 verse 39

all i see hear is you disagreeing by what has been said so far and you are with in your rights to disagree as wel as i am with in my rights to disagree by what you and ozell are leaving

Well since we have an expert and i am just a poor sap who has no brain you tell me should new christians seek this gift or should new christians listen to experts like your self and ozell ?

and i am being peace full hear by what i have said their is no anger in my responce to you ?

should i tell my father in law and the two deakons to discourage the inmates that have given there lives to god not to seek this gift because its not as genuine as what happend in the upper room

i can say the same when it comes to the hog wash you hold onto and dont educate me or tell me i dont understand as i said their was no sex involved to what happend in the garden show me biblical proof since you feel that what happend in the garden was due to satan having sex with eve

so how about you give me biblical proof to were paul was telling the cornith church not to seek this gift

i know as i said what paul was saying but if you tend to only stick to the verses that ozell is giving i will not listen

God bless from damo smile.gif
damo7
hear is what i looked at concerning what ozell and nightmare are saying yep spot on maz this is one big joke by the punch line

acts 2 the holy spirit comes at penticost

acts 19 paul in ephesus

and the famous punch line people like ussing to bring in confusion

1 corinthians 14 Gifts of prophesy and Tongues

you cant just stick to a certain passage and then look at this verse that ozell is mainly focusing on

1 corinthians 14

22 tongues then are a sign not for believers but for unbelivers prophesy however is for believers and not unbelivers

yeh typical when it comes to some ones testimony and how god has changed them and then in comes this critical attitude that i have been so use to and have seen the damage its done from with in to were folk like nightmare tell guys like my self its not genuine as to what happend in the upper room

oh so i must be ofending god every time i speak in tongues or use this to stir the sprirt

how foolish have we all been to fall for this and only know do we have experts trying to tell us that its not off god and we should discourage this and discourage others ussing this

so what happens if god tends to want to give us this gift do we tell god to go and talk to ozell and nightmare and say no thank as speaking in tongues is of the devil

have a look at this and you tell me why paul would say we are not to discourage any one concerning speaking in tongues

1 corinthians 14

39 Therefore my brothers be eager to prophesy and do not forbid speaking in tongues

so is this a game now to were people have played along and all of a suden have had their eyes opened to the truth ?

why do we focus only on certain passages and ignore the important one

It just can't be more clear to me, yet my cousin insists that until I speak Jibberish, I'm not yet saved. I told her these verses in a simplified version over the phone. When her and I pray for our families, she also prays in Jibberish, yet we have both seen those prayers answered in God's time.

we have a major job to do in correcting the wrong.

stay strong and fight the good fight.

satan has got a foothold on this earth.

yet we will prevail in JESUS.

hear is what ozell said we have a major job in correcting the wrong satan has got a foot hold on this earth

so the many who believe that this is of the lord how are you going to win us over ? what verses have you got to back this up ?

Jesus never spoke in tongues this is one thing i noticed when i was going over the new testament he had the holy spirit and all the gifts though apparently he did not have this one

this is also what i looked at

1 it must be an actual language 1 corinthians 14 v 10 acts 2 v 8

2 it must not be adressed to men 1 corinthians 14 - 2

3 it must only be adressed to God 1 corinithians 14 - 2

4 it must not be a sign for believers 1 corinthians 14 v 22

5 it is to be a sign to the unbelieving jews that the gospel is for all people 1 corinthians 14 v 21

6 it is to be a sign of judgment for the unbelieving jews Is 28 11 - 13 1 corinthians 14 v 21

7 it is not to be practised in private but publically in the pressence of unbeleving jews for whom it is destined acts 2 v 5 1 corinthians 14 v 22

i am no dummy or do i jump in head first because everyone is expecting me to follow suit i am my own man and i do my own re search

even by what you leave i go back to gods word but i dont stick to one passage or one scripture passage

by what nightmare and ozell are saying it is not as authentic as what happend in the upper room boy how foolish must we all feel if we have guys like this trying to reach out to us and tel us we have got it wrong
