I mostly listen to people like Kenny G, Yanni, Mozart, Vanessa Mae.

I can appreciate an excellent, trained voice such as Streisand, Mariah Carey, Whitney Houston or Donna Sommer. However, these days I no longer listen to secular music.

Mercy Me, Brooklyn Tabernacle Choir, Josh Groban (he has a heavenly voice)! And WhiteKnight.. Vanessa Mae is AWESOME! Great violinist!

There are several that I like, but my favorite band/musical artist is Dire Straits/Mark Knopfler. And while I love quite a few of their/his songs, my favorite is "Going Home (Theme from the Movie 'Local Hero')", and my favorite version of that song is from Dire Straits' "Alchemy" concert at the Hammersmith Odeon in 1983 (the link above is to that version).

In my mind's eye, I always picture that song as being part of a video of Jesus, from His being taken down from the cross, to His being placed in the tomb, to His being in the tomb for roughly a day and a half, to His resurrection (which would coincide with where the song becomes "anthemic", at the 4 minute, 18 second point of the video), to His appearing to the women and His disciples, to His later ascension to Heaven. The combination is very stirring, for me. (I really wish a professional video could be done with this song, having it "accompany" Jesus from the cross to Heaven. I have a very clear vision of how the video should or would be. And, the title of the song, "Going Home [Local Hero]", is very appropriate for Jesus and His being taken down from the cross culminating in His ascension.)

This video is difficult for me to watch at times....don't get me wrong, I love Brad Paisley but this song is about sin, hurt, lost, love, tragedy. I have known so many people that have committed suicide in the past and it really bothers me when a minister tells me that suicide victims go to hell. A little over a year ago, I attendend a funeral service for a young man that did commit suicide and the sermon topic was; "Taken the trash out." But folks, only God knows and understands the hurts that individuals experiences. Only God know and cares enough to understand the why's of a suicide. This is true. Spirits operate behind the music. And spirits also put the thoughts (some) into peoples minds to write the lyrics they write also.
A strong Christian can see this, and, listen while rejecting the messages of rebellion, hopelessness etc. Strong Christians should be able to see what is behind the scenes. Younger Christians, or, those new in the faith, will most likely not be aware of what is tugging at them in their minds and feelings etc. The HS will protect them, but, it is good to know what is going on "back" stage.

As you are worried so much about the Eagles song I posted (which is pretty neutral)....I am much more worried about you embraceing Uri Geller and those types of things.

Lets really think about what we are saying here. There is no difference.

Does anyone think that the kosher food laws in Leviticus can spiritually apply to music and TV entertainment for our minds? I mean, isn't willfully indulging in carnal entertainment that glorifies godlessness, is filled with unclean language, sex, inuendos, the Lord's name in vain, immodesty, and just carnal thinking and behavior defiling to the inner man?

That's a good point, Eliyahuzion... our minds are affected by the spiritual (good and bad) and the kosher laws as well as all the laws were put in place for the Lord to show there was no way that they could all be kept... but I truly believe the thoughts we think are affected greatly by spirits and emotions that many times are outside of us... how many times has a song we have played stayed with us over and over again... you know, the "I can't get that song out of my head"... kind of thing... it really should be a place (our mind) that is policed regularly and we either allow or deny thoughts inside. Good food to think on!

That's the idea I am getting at.

The Kosher laws , I believe, illistrate how there is clean and unclean spiritual food as well as the physical. Unclean food was somewhat unhealthy for the most part. God made that food and he allowed the gentiles to eat it. But to willfully obstain from worthless, wordly, and carnal entertainment is fulfilling the kosher laws in a new covenant spiritual sense. Watching porn is similar to eating pork. Listening to music with carnal lyrics is like eating oysters as a Jew in the Bible days. Do you understand? They both defile us for the presence of God and his people. They both require a cleansing and in the case of willful defilement, repentance. I am not advocating that we should eat strictly Kosher. I am trying to prove a point.

I listen to a variety of really good worship music that I can easily engage the presence of God with. Most believers would not have a problem with this. I also, however, love to listen to hardcore/metal bands like Living Sacrifice and get into the most pit at their shows. Most Christians think this music is Satanic just because they don't like it. But I like it and the lyrics are glorifying to God and edifying as well as entertaining. I am free. I can just as easily say that hip hop and R&B, gospel music, country and religious church music is Satanic because I don't enjoy those styles at all. Like food, we all have different tastes. But to freely enjoy music that explores the occult, new age and eastern religious philosophy is not clean. To groove to music that celebrates immoral sex or violence, pride, vanity, etc (I am thinking of hip hop, rap and R&B) is not clean. As if Jesus would listen to music that encourages darkness in people's heart.

That is like this: If I heard someone talking about how they want to hurt my wife, or if they were demeaning her, or if they were speaking of her looks in a lewd way, or if they were challenging her, I would have to defend her as her husband and I would definitely not simply sit back and indulge in the fine way that people sing songs against my wife. Why aren't we as jealous over our Jesus in the same way? Christians are actually more offended at people for actually calling something unclean and calling it out rather than being grieved in their spirit by the sin stained lyrics in the tunes they listen to. I cannot understand how people can simply enjoy music with demonic and ungodly messages. The message matters. We are called as the church to be the pillar and foundation of the truth. We are called to be salt and light. It is absolute truth that Jesus would not indulge in and enjoy music that celebrates and promotes darkness in its lyrical content. This does not condemn every non-worship song. Obviously there are beautiful songs in the world that celebrate good things and/or explore the human experience in ways like the Bible's wisdom literature does. There is also a time for everything- and music to match each of those times.

Eliyahuzion, you have a lot of wisdom! I wish I had more time to answer this properly, but have a lot going on today. I do know where you are coming from and I feel for you... that those won't heed the moral lesson of letting the messages into our heads and just going about our business like we were robots, not knowing that the message was harming our spirits! We really do need to understand what the MESSAGE is doing to us... for sure... and I applaud your ability to discern the difference... music is propaganda.. just like those subtle ways messages get into our heads by watching television, commercials, etc... it's stuck in our face and our mind processes it. This is how they train people in other countries to hate others, the terrorism, etc. It is all propaganda. Music can be used the same way and IS! If you think how many times you were a kid and heard a song on the radio because nobody really thinks about what you're listening to, and say it was Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds... well, I know when I was a kid, it was a silly song.. I had no idea there was a MESSAGE and yet I found out later in life it was about LSD, drugs! Many messages are hidden because they are authored by the spirit behind them.

tastes (if music be the "food" of love play on) are very personal and one's music is the most difficult aspect of one's life to 'crucify'. As the Word speaks -

I tend to listen to worship music the most, and not the heavy metal bands, just uplifting music that is sweet to the Lord. My opinion.

IrishRose, you have good discernment. In these Last Days, the world is literally bathed in the 'occult' - in music, television, film, magazines, books, politics, 'religion' etc. The subtleness is proportional to the time that is left before Messiah's return for us.

As for those who like to point the finger..... Here is one for you.

Christ said that this sin is not defined by just a physical act; if we even allow such a thought in our mind we have sinned. We have mentally crossed that boundary, trampling that limit God gave us.

I can't even stand anything anymore.. if it's not violent or cussing or antichrist, it's the stinking news that is such a lie that it makes me choke... so the Weather Channel is all I can trust and even that changes from second to second depending on what the weather people want to interpret! I actually like some secular bands... and enjoy Celine Dion (when she had her first album) and Mariah Carey (she grew up in my home town).. she has an angelic voice but her whole persona died after the first album. I love Andrea Bocelli.. he has a voice like Pavarotti... worship music, old bands I grew up with.. Marshall Tucker, Bread, i know, yuck... Barry Manilow... Alison Krauss for Bluegrass.. mostly instrumental stuff though... I like to make up my own lyrics and sing them to God.

But you don't like Bread? I love some of their songs. I remember after I broke it off with my first boyfriend....I just listened to some of their love songs and cried the whole day.

And Barry Manilow....what woman doesn't love his songs?

This has been a fun thread. But it is good to point out how we should be careful about what we listen to.

For that song of Sarah McLaughlins that I posted....it sounds so sad. But its one of those that seem neutral for the most part. So I don't mind it.

I don't believe Sarah or her beliefs cause me to sin. But if one listens to the wrong lyrics...then yes...that can influence a persons thoughts and emotions.

i am a hillsong fan since we use a lot of hillsongs songs in our church and their songs are used all around the world

i also like the stuff that comes from vinyard

i also like the blues music and heavy metal music mainly christian artists


i love what kevin prosh brings out

i am a petra fan as well as a stryper fan


i also tend to listen to clasical music i am teaching my self how to play clasical songs on guitar


i like tommy emmanual he is a christian by the way his stuff is all clasical no singing at all tommy emmual is very talented and well liked around the world


steve grace is one of my favorite Australian gospel singers he also has a powerfull testimony he use to be a truck driver before he gave his heart to the lord and never could play the guitar he wrote the great south land i am not sure if this is sung in your part of the world you live in but in Australia everyone knows the great south land and its used a fair bit in our church services

i tend to try to listen to the new music that is comming out oh i love listening to gospel singers from nigeria and from africa

I remember hearing this song on the radio and thinking about it. I remember a few times like that. The pain is always there when you get sober.

Only God can heal. Alcohol will never do it.

The main thing that is sad to me is hearing about a Pastor calling a suicide "Taking the Trash Out". What a terrible thing to do.

I asked a Jewish friend of mine about this once. He told me that in Judaism that they do not automatically think suicide victims go to hell.

He told me that God considers if the person was able to think clearly or not.

I hope this is true.

As for Brad Paisley.....he is a good musician. I like his music.
