Hi there
I would really like some advice on how to pray for my mum. It's a complicated situation but I will try and so my best to outline the important bits.
My mum had a breakdown about 10 years ago. She was admitted to a psychiatric unit and she had a schizophrenic type disease. Prior to this she had got very religious and had been baptised in the Orthodox church and it got to the point where she was hearing voices, talking to Princess Diana and so on.
I was a new believer and my mum lived overseas. When she went back to my Dad (he'd put her on the plane after her breakdown and she showed up at the house in a mess, unable to care for herself). She stabilised on the meds and after a few years she came over again. My husband and I were now stronger Christians and we knew a bit more and we prayed over her one afternoon. She started to speak in tongues and we were so happy, it was a bit unexpected and the whole room seemed to glow. I believe that the Lord healed her and over the next few years she grew to love the Lord and it was like my healed mum was back! She threw out her drugs and she was strong and vibrant. She read the bible a lot and was like a sponge, I could speak to her about spiritual things.

I really thought my mum was healed and much better and a few years later we moved to Australia, much further away. It was a couple of years ago that my mum had another breakdown. I was so downhearted and I have been praying for my mum and now I just feel like there is something spiritual going on and I don't know what it is. I have asked the Lord what it is and I have been binding any demonic spirits but I just don't know what else to do. I go to a baptist church and I feel like I am called to be there but it's hard to get any advice.

Now my mother is struggling with hypochondria, she is constantly thinking she has all sorts of diseases and it's hard to write off the illnesses as she isn't very healthy anyway. My dad isn't a believer so she is very much on her own and doesn't have any born again Christians near her.
In my mums village there is a lot of Satanism too and once she found a rabbits foot outside her door. In the past she has been encouraging other people in her village to read the bible but now she has given up hope. Sometimes my Dad freaks out as she will just wander off and last year she disappeared and Dad found her in a psychiatric institution.

I pray every night for my parents, that God will protect them. That demonic forces will be bound and that my Dad's health will be good too (he has had strokes and epilepsy, once the Lord woke me and I was moved to tears while praying for him, that the Lord would spare his life, it turned out that at that time he was having a stroke). I also pray that my Dad's eyes will be opened and that he will see that Jesus is real.

I think my mum has had some occult experiences with Faith healers too, this was a while ago, also she read horoscopes. Is it something demonic?
Thankyou so much for taking the time to read this, I hope it's enough detail and isn't too waffley, I would love to see some breakthrough for my parents but I just don't know what's going on. If mum was near me I would love to lay hands on her and pray for her but she is so far away and I just can't afford to go over as I have 3 young children.

i will pray for your parents. i worked with several populations of people,
mental illness of which you describe schizophrenia, depression, paranoia
and brain impairments related to dementia and alzheimers.

there can be several levels of physical and mental and spiritual things
going on. i wouldn't point to only one thing as i have seen lovely people
ravaged my a disease process and i wouldn't want to say that these
people are demoniacs. deterioration of process having to do with
neurotransmittors due to any number of toxic situation, including the
environment can lead to the impairment of thought and function.

i do stand with you on all these things that God will stretch out His
hand of mercy and your father will reach out and stand in the gap with
you for your mother.

these are very difficult illness to understand, but i believe that prayer
makes a difference in the lives of the afflicted and brings comfort.
pray and give it to the Lord, pray and give it to the Lord, pray and give
it to the Lord...

blessings,

Bessie,

I am so sorry that your mom and dad are experiencing such heartbreaking times, I shall keep them in my prayers. Bessie, in my line of work I witness that many of our patients become fixated on religion, and this fixation can do more damage than good. Religion can destroy but our Lord gives life. Is your mom and dad involved with Christian folks?

Another question is this? Is your mom presently prescribed on medications? If so, I would advise her to take them until such a time that she can see a doctor. Does your mom have access to a Christian counselor? If so please ask your mom to make an appointment.

satan is always prowling around and looking for a soul to devour. The closer one is to God the harder the devil will strike at the believer. satan knows that he is living in the last days and presently he is acting out...having a giant temper tantrum. I will keep your mother in my prayers and you keep sending healing prayers your moms way. And when satan reminds you of your moms past remind the little germ of his future; that will shut him up.

In Christian Love,

Al

..praying that, no matter what, your mom will keep her heart on Jesus. Just the attempt alone, will help her stay focused, even if her mind begins to wander and forget.

Thanks so much for your kind words and prayers everyone. I have tried asking for advice before (not here as I'm a newbie!) and I feel so blessed with your thoughtful answers and wisdom.

Thanks for your perspective Signet. It helps chatting with someone who knows what mentally ill people go through and some of the reasons. I will keep on praying. I'm glad that God has been using you with the mentally ill as it is such a burden.

Thanks also Al. No my mum and dad have barely any contact with Christian folks as they are expats living in Greece. There are very few bible believers around, most of the population are Orthodox, some are believers but there is a lot of ritual and Saint worship. My Dad is an alcoholic, lapsed Catholic.... he can give her trouble but since her mental health has deteriorated he has been a lot kinder. I sometimes think that he is very close to believing but then he seems to have all these objections and strongholds.
My mum is taking antidepressants and antipsychotics. She had 7 years of good mental health and didn't use them, but then slid back into mental illness, we are worried she will wander off if she doesn't take them but thankfully she realises the need to continue.
She doesn't have access to a Christian counsellor, I'm about as close as she gets sad.gif She's quite dependent, I don't mind helping her out a bit but I worry that she depends on me too much. I try and point her to God though.

Dear Bessie

i will be keeping you and your family in my prayers. i can related to half your mums suffering as its the same situation with my dad. you have been given good advice here smile.gif like Al suggested, if your mum can get into see a christian councilor then that will help with a lot of things, but she has to keep going. also seeing a doctor is a good thing. apart from that theres not a lot really what you can do yourself. where abouts in australia are you? im in tasmania smile.gif all you can do is keep praying for her. so i pray that she is protected by Gods Angels and that she will come under no harm.
and yes, horoscopes are of the spiritual realm, so chances are with all the evil around this is one massive spiritual attack. so im praying hard for your mum and dad and for you and your family.

blessings,

Pinky

Thanks guys x
Pinky, I'm in Perth but Mum is in Greece... so no Christian counsellors sad.gif I'm glad to see another Aussie around!
Thanks for all the advice though, I heard from my Dad that she is doing better but this is such a continuing thing with many ups and downs.

Bessie, Signet is right. But I think that your mum's problem is likely demonic. She has opened spiritual doors to the kingdom of darkness and attacks have manifested. I believe that demonic activity against a person's body can cause a change in physiology, at the cellular level, resulting in real diseases manifesting. I don't know whether or not this has happened to her, but even if it has, God can restore her. Devils can't be prayed out, but must be cast out. Prayer can and should be done, but the devils must be cast out. I suggest that you and anyone else excercise the authority given by God against these spirits. I will agree with you and command them to leave in Jesus name. I'll also be praying for her. Ask her to renounce her occultic and faith healer dealings as sin, and ask God for deliverance and restoration.

In another similar request, several people did warfare and prayer at a designated time, 3pm in that case. It is a good plan I think.

You may pm me if you wish. God bless, David
