"By faith the harlot Rahab perished not with them that believed not, when she had received the spies with peace"

(Hebrews 11:31).

Dr. Criswell comments on the scarlet-colored blood-red thread that Rahab hung out of her window, "The scarlet line of Rahab is a symbol of her faith that God will provide deliverance in the time of judgment. Throughout the Bible 'scarlet' speaks of sacrifice made on the behalf of the believer, and it is seen in the vestments of the tabernacle and in the priestly garments in Exodus" (ibid., note on Joshua 2:18-21). This message is not based on Dr. Criswell's famous sermon, "The Scarlet Thread of Redemption," but the basic idea came from it.

Rahab was saved from destruction because she had enough faith in God to hang a red rope out of her window. This blood-red rope is a type (or picture) of the blood-red scarlet thread that runs through the Bible, from Genesis to Revelation. The Scofield note on Joshua 2:21 says, "The scarlet line of Rahab speaks, by its color, of safety through sacrifice (Hebrews 9:19, 22)." That red rope pictures the scarlet thread that runs from one end of the Bible to the other.

It is evident from the narrative that the scarlet thread was in her window during the absence of the messengers. Is there not a similar thought in 1 Cor. 11: 26? As we come together in a scene which is hostile to Christ we break bread and drink the cup; we thus acknowledge our loyalty to our absent Lord and we "show the Lord's death (or it might read, "announce the death of the Lord") till He come." I believe this precious remembrance of Him has gone right through like a scarlet thread, all through the church's history, through the so-called dark ages until now and will continue until He comes again; loyal hearts who say in effect, "The earth is the Lord's and the fulness thereof."

Scarlet Scarlet cord was tied around the wrist of Zerah (Genesis 38:28-30); used a great deal in the tabernacle (Exodus 25:4); the color of cord hung from Rahab's window (Joshua 2:18); a mark of prosperity (II Samuel 1:24; Proverbs 31:21); the color of the robe placed on Jesus (Matthew 27:28); though scarlet and purple were not always distinguished (Mark 15:17); color of the beast ridden by the harlot Babylon (Revelation 17:3) along with some of her garments (Revelation 17:4) and those of her followers (Revelation 18:16).

Often refers to blood atonement and sacrifice.

Dear Crown7,

This is the proscription for the Jews to break the Egytian bondage. The Passover
cup and bread. These is also a prescription for intercession. And we can
re enact this as led to come into agreement and acknowledge God's plan of
salvation and bring down strongholds that stand against the knowledge of God.

An imperfect son of mortality/enosh clings to the mortal and perishes with it: such a son is stillborn. In the metaphor of Peretz/Zerach, it does not gain the inheritance/birthright of the firstborn. A perfected son of mortality puts on immortality and rises from the cocoon of the flesh in an imperishable form, the body of light. The scarlet thread-- the karmic trail of blood/life-- accompanies the elect son (Zerach) through all of his struggles with Peretz in the cocoon/womb/flesh.

the midwife tied a thread around it . . .
http://www.geocities.com/richleebruce/miracle/names.html
Zerah and Perez are the second set of twins in the Old Testament (Genesis 38:27-30). Zerah's hand came out of the womb first, and the midwife tied a thread around it, but Zerah pulled his hand back into the womb. Then Perez came out followed by Zerah with the thread still tied around his wrist. I assume the thread was used to determine who was the first born. The point is, once again, someone's hand or arm was checked to determine their identity or status.

So far, I have discussed three stories that shared two elements of the pattern have been discussed: twins and someone checking a hand or arm to determine who another person is. But there is a third element, the color red or scarlet.

Red first appears in the Bible in the story of Jacob and Esau (Genesis 25:25-31). Esau came out of the womb red and hairy. Esau sold his birth right to Jacob for a bowl of red pottage, and therefore he was called Edom which means red. The first 24 chapters of the Bible do not use the word red or scarlet once, then within six verses red is used three times.

Scarlet, which means red, first appears in the story of the second set of twins, Zerah and Perez. The thread tied around Zerah's wrist was scarlet.

The blood from Christ's wounds would also have been red though the Bible makes no mention of blood in the wounds of the risen Christ.

So there are three elements in a pattern repeated three times, twins, someone investigates a second person's forearm or hand to determine identity or status, and red or blood which is red.
