The Coming of the Prophet Elijah
by Britt Gillette

Prior to the arrival of Jesus Christ, the nation of Israel endured several hundred years of silence from the Lord. The Old Testament prophets who had in days past delivered regular messages from God Almighty suddenly went silent. But in the final verses of the Old Testament, God gave a promise to Israel. He promised to send the prophet Elijah before the great and dreadful day of the Lord. In the first century, many Jews lived in a state of constant alert, ready for the arrival of Elijah at a moment’s notice. It was this very atmosphere of expectation into which John the Baptist and Jesus of Nazareth first appeared.

Below is the prophecy which prompted great expectation of Elijah’s coming. It appears in the Book of Malachi:

“Look, I am sending you the prophet Elijah before the great and dreadful day of the Lord arrives. His preaching will turn the hearts of fathers to their children, and the hearts of children to their fathers. Otherwise I will come and strike the land with a curse.” Malachi 4:5-6 (NLT)

For the past 2,000 years, many Christians have believed Elijah’s identity is an open-and-shut case. The conventional wisdom is that he’s already appeared, thus fulfilling completely the prophecies of Malachi 4. It’s easy to see why this is a commonly held belief, because Jesus Himself said John the Baptist was Elijah:

“And if you are willing to accept what I say, he is Elijah, the one the prophets said would come.” Matthew 11:14 (NLT)

But did Jesus really identify John the Baptist as the Elijah of Malachi 4:5? Was He saying, “this is THE Elijah, and there is no other”? Careful examination of the scriptures reveals that Jesus was not saying this. Yes, John the Baptist came in the spirit and power of Elijah, but he was not Elijah. Just as the first century Jews expected a conquering Messiah rather than a suffering one, they also expected a much more powerful Elijah than the one they received. In his place, they received a man who, like his Messiah, would suffer greatly at the hands of his contemporaries.

Malachi 4

In order to better understand the prophecy of Elijah’s coming, let’s examine the context in which the verse appears:

“The Lord of Heaven’s Armies says, ‘The day of judgment is coming, burning like a furnace. On that day the arrogant and the wicked will be burned up like straw. They will be consumed – roots, branches, and all. But for you who fear my name, the Sun of Righteousness will rise with healing in his wings. And you will go free, leaping with joy like calves let out to pasture. On the day when I act, you will tread upon the wicked as if they were dust under your feet,’ says the Lord of Heaven’s Armies. ‘Remember to obey the Law of Moses, my servant – all the decrees and regulations that I gave him on Mount Sinai for all Israel. Look, I am sending you the prophet Elijah before the great and dreadful day of the Lord arrives. His preaching will turn the hearts of fathers to their children, and the hearts of children to their fathers. Otherwise I will come and strike the land with a curse.’” Malachi 4:1-6 (NLT)

First and foremost, this passage describes the great Day of Judgment of the Lord Almighty. This day and the day of Christ’s Glorious Appearing are one and the same. The “Lord of Heaven’s Armies” is the conquering Messiah the Jews expected when Jesus first came. He is Lord of the same armies identified in Revelation 19:14, and the Antichrist and all his armies will bear the wrath of this heavenly force. This event, “the great and dreadful day of Lord,” is the one which will be preceded by the coming of the prophet Elijah.

However, the last two verses of this passage provide us with a valuable clue. They offer two possible outcomes. When Elijah comes, his preaching will either “turn the hearts of fathers to their children, and the hearts of children to their fathers,” or it will not. If it does, then Israel will be prepared for the King to Come. If it does not, then God will come and strike the land with a curse.

In the first century, the nation of Israel chose the latter option.

John the Baptist came, in the spirit and power of Elijah, to fulfill this prophecy. Yet, although many hearts were transformed by his ministry, like Christ, he was ultimately rejected. Therefore, the land of Israel was cursed. A few years later, it fell to the Romans, and the Jewish people were scattered all over the earth. The Day of Judgment was delayed, and along with it, complete fulfillment of the prophecies of Malachi 4. What this means is that before the Day of Judgment arrives, the nation of Israel will witness the appearance of the prophet Elijah, and his coming will fulfill to the letter every prophecy of Malachi 4.

A Precedent for One Prophecy Pointing to Two Individuals

If this is true, then John the Baptist only partially fulfilled the prophecies of Malachi 4, and the ultimate fulfillment of these verses is still future. Is this possible? How can the same prophecy point to two distinctly different individuals separated by almost 2,000 years of human history?

Dual fulfillment of prophecy is not a new concept. In fact, Jesus spoke about the Antichrist’s ultimate fulfillment of a dual prophecy while teaching His disciples about the end of the age. The prophecy of which He spoke concerned an event known as the abomination of desolation, a satanic act in which a human being desecrates the Holy of Holies in God’s Temple:

“The day is coming when you will see what Daniel the prophet spoke about – the sacrilegious object that causes desecration standing in the Holy Place.” Matthew 24:15 (NLT)

Jesus spoke of this as a future event, yet it had happened once before in history. In 167 B.C., the Syrian king Antiochus IV Epiphanes erected a statue of Zeus in the Holy of Holies and desecrated the sanctuary and its holy vessels. Several centuries prior to this, Daniel (in Daniel 11:21-35) prophesied the life and times of Antiochus IV Epiphanes. Yet those same verses, in many ways, also apply to the Antichrist, whose life is further detailed in Daniel 11:36-45. The same set of prophecies applies to two distinct individuals: Antiochus IV Epiphanes, who would come in the spirit and power of the Antichrist, and the Antichrist himself, who would ultimately fulfill the prophecies of Daniel 11. This is why Jesus referred to the desecration of the Temple as a future event. Because, ultimately, the Antichrist will perform this act as well:

“He will put an end to the sacrifices and offerings. Then as a climax to all his terrible deeds, he will set up a sacrilegious object that causes desecration, until the end that has been decreed is poured out on this defiler.” Daniel 9:27 (NLT)

Daniel 9:27 and Daniel 11:21-45 are clear references to the Antichrist. Yet both were partially fulfilled in the life of Antiochus IV Epiphanes. Likewise, the ultimate fulfillment of Malachi 4 requires a second individual.

The Elijah of the End Times

Some have put forward the argument that John the Baptist completely fulfilled the prophecy of Malachi 4:5 to send “the prophet Elijah before the great and dreadful day of the Lord arrives.” They say that the appearance of John the Baptist over 2,000 years before the great and dreadful day of the Lord qualifies as his coming “before” that day.

Yet the Lord Jesus did not think in such terms. In fact, when He first came, He specifically told the people of His generation that the Day of the Lord had not arrived. He did this in His own hometown of Nazareth, where He read a prophecy from Isaiah and, by exclusion, proclaimed it only partially fulfilled:

"When he came to the village of Nazareth, his boyhood home, he went as usual to the synagogue on the Sabbath and stood up to read the Scriptures. The scroll of Isaiah the prophet was handed to him. He unrolled the scroll and found the place where this was written: ‘The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, for he has anointed me to bring Good News to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim that captives will be released, that the blind will see, that the oppressed will be set free, and that the time of the Lord’s favor has come.’ He rolled up the scroll, handed it back to the attendant, and sat down. All eyes in the synagogue looked at him intently. Then he began to speak to them. ‘The Scripture you’ve just heard has been fulfilled this very day!’” Luke 4:16-21 (NLT)

This prophecy was indeed fulfilled on that very day by the Lord Jesus Christ. But let’s examine the same verses in their entirety:

“The Spirit of the Sovereign Lord is upon me, for the Lord has anointed me to bring good news to the poor. He has sent me to comfort the brokenhearted and to proclaim that captives will be released and prisoners will be freed. He has sent me to tell those who mourn that the time of the Lord’s favor has come, and with it, the day of God’s anger against their enemies.” Isaiah 61:1-2 (NLT)

Jesus specifically chose not to read the final part of verse two, “and with it, the day of God’s anger against their enemies.” This verse is a direct reference to the Day of the Lord Almighty, the same day referenced in Malachi 4. Jesus was telling us that this day is still a future event.

In the Book of Revelation, the Lord promises to send two witnesses prior to the Day of Lord Almighty:

“And I will give power to my two witnesses, and they will be clothed in burlap and will prophesy during those 1,260 days. These two prophets are the two olive trees and the two lampstands that stand before the Lord of all the earth. If anyone tries to harm them, fire flashes from their mouths and consumes their enemies. This is how anyone who tries to harm them must die. They have power to shut the sky so that no rain will fall for as long as they prophesy. And they have the power to turn the rivers and oceans into blood, and to strike the earth with every kind of plague as often as they wish.” Revelation 11:3-6 (NLT)

The powers of these two witnesses in Revelation 11 directly correlate with the powers God provided Moses and Elijah in the Old Testament. Elijah is the only Old Testament prophet who called down fire to consume God’s enemies (2 Kings 1:8-14). He also prophesied that it would not rain for three and a half years, the biblical equivalent of 1,260 days. In similar fashion, Moses was given the power to unleash plagues on Egypt and to turn the Nile red with blood. As a result, it seems likely that Moses and Elijah are the two witnesses of Revelation 11, for they will hold the same God-given powers.

In the Book of Matthew, we read of the event commonly known as “the transfiguration.” This is when Jesus was suddenly transfigured “so that His face shone like the sun, and His clothing became dazzling white” Matthew 17:2 (NLT):

“Suddenly, Moses and Elijah appeared and began talking with Jesus. Peter exclaimed, ‘Lord, it’s wonderful for us to be here! If you want, I’ll make three shelters as memorials – one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah.’ But even as he spoke, a bright cloud overshadowed them, and a voice from the cloud said, ‘This is my dearly loved Son, who brings me great joy. Listen to him.’ The disciples were terrified and fell face down on the ground. Then Jesus came over and touched them. ‘Get up,’ he said. ‘Don’t be afraid.’ And when they looked up, Moses and Elijah were gone, and they saw only Jesus.” Matthew 17:3-8 (NLT)

The transfiguration seems to highlight both the present and future importance of Moses and Elijah in God’s Kingdom, and it can be interpreted as strong evidence that they are “the two olive trees and the two lampstands that stand before the Lord of all the earth.”

What’s also noticeable in this passage is that this event is witnessed by Peter, James, and John. All three of these disciples were contemporaries of John the Baptist. They knew what he looked like, and yet, they immediately identified Elijah as the Old Testament prophet Elijah and not John the Baptist. If John the Baptist were the second coming of Elijah (which would have been possible since Elijah was taken up to heaven before he died), then the disciples would’ve asked to build shelters in honor of Moses and John the Baptist, not Moses and Elijah.

John the Baptist Was NOT the Elijah of the End Times

If all of this is true, and John the Baptist is not Elijah, then why did Jesus say He was? After all, he clearly stated so:

“And if you are willing to accept what I say, he is Elijah, the one the prophets said would come.” Matthew 11:14 (NLT)

Notice that Jesus doesn’t say, “He is Elijah, the one the prophets said would come.” Jesus knew the Jewish people were expecting the Elijah who would come before the great and dreadful Day of the Lord. Just as it was difficult for the Jewish people to accept a suffering Messiah when they expected a conquering one, He knew it would be just as difficult to accept John the Baptist as the first coming of Elijah, “in the spirit and power of Elijah,” without the Day of the Lord accompanying him.

John the Baptist was not Elijah. He was only one who would appear in “the spirit and power of Elijah.” This was clearly stated by the angel Gabriel prior to John’s birth:

“He will be filled with the Holy Spirit, even before his birth. And he will turn many Israelites to the Lord their God. He will be a man with the spirit and power of Elijah. He will prepare the people for the coming of the Lord. He will turn the hearts of the fathers to their children, and he will cause those who are rebellious to accept the wisdom of the godly.” Luke 1:15-17 (NLT)

Gabriel is clear in his statement that John the Baptist would be a man with “the spirit and power of Elijah.” But he would not be Elijah himself. This is further evidence that Malachi 4 is a dual reference prophecy.

Jesus addressed this dual fulfillment of Malachi 4 when His disciples directly asked Him about the coming of the prophet Elijah:

“Then his disciples asked him, ‘Why do the teachers of religious law insist that Elijah must return before the Messiah comes?’ Jesus replied, ‘Elijah is indeed coming first to get everything ready. But I tell you, Elijah has already come, but he wasn’t recognized, and they chose to abuse him. And in the same way they will also make the Son of Man suffer.’ Then the disciples realized he was talking about John the Baptist.” Matthew 17:10-13 (NLT)

Notice that Jesus says: “Indeed, Elijah is coming first.” He doesn’t say “has” come first. He says “is coming” first. This indicates a future coming of the prophet Elijah. Yet, just as the Messiah (Jesus) was not recognized, one who came in the “spirit and power of Elijah” (John the Baptist) was also not recognized. The rejection and suffering of Jesus and John the Baptist are distinctly separate from the coming of the prophet Elijah and the Glorious Appearing of Jesus, both of which will occur at the end of the age.

As further evidence of this fact, John the Baptist himself states that he is not the expected coming of the prophet Elijah:

“This was John’s testimony when the Jewish leaders sent priests and Temple assistants from Jerusalem to ask John, ‘Who are you?’ He came right out and said, ‘I am not the Messiah.’ ‘Well then, who are you?’ they asked. ‘Are you Elijah?’ ‘No,’ he replied.” John 1:19-21 (NLT)

John the Baptist clearly states that he is not Elijah. Does his statement contradict the one Jesus made in Matthew 11:14? No, it does not. Both Jesus and John the Baptist knew the distinction between the Messiah’s first and second comings. Both knew that each coming would be preceded by the prophet Elijah. The first instance would be John the Baptist coming in the “spirit and power of Elijah” and the second instance would be the appearance of the Old Testament prophet Elijah himself.

Conclusion

Given the numerous signs of the end of the age – the rebirth of Israel as nation, her subsequent possession of Jerusalem, the rise of Gog/Magog alliance, the rise of the revived Roman Empire (the European Union), the certainty of global government, and various other signs – we can rest assured that His Return is very near, right at the door. Ours is the last generation of this age.

The prophet Elijah is coming, and the Glorious Appearing of our Lord Jesus Christ will soon follow!

Amen. Come, Lord Jesus! And may the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ be with us all.

I see scrtiptures that talk about the past Elijah.

But where is the scriptures that say an Elijah will come before the Lord Jesus this time?

I don't see it.

But I do see some people really getting into what I call the "Elijah movement". Where is the scripture referances to back this up?

Thanks.

Mal 4:5 Behold, I will send you Elijah the prophet before the great and terrible day of the LORD come.

If you look at Elijah's ministry...He confronted the false Prophets of Baal and the Asherah....look those up. This same ministry will happen again in the end days.....the False Prophet will be confronted by those who are under the same anointing....it is an exposing ministry. The people are confused between 2 opinions....the current false structure we call,"Church" is an abomination to God Almighty. It's filled with money grubbers, false doctrines, power hungry Nioclaitans over the peoples of God....this is all about to change and many Christians will have to follow the Lord or stay in the old "Pastor-dominated" system. Agreed. It may not mean the actual person but the battle that they were fighting. Thoug I have heard the argument that "Elijah" had already reentered the world at the time of coming of the Lord into the world the first time in the guise of John the Babtist, making the way straight for the Lord and His final judgement on the cross (so that now it is finished but the sorting).

The Lord's day is the great and terrible "day" of the Lord.

Jesus said the first time He came I came to save not to judge....

I discerned the spirit of Elijah already so I know Jesus is just waiting to be revealed...Like the first time He was hidden for 30 years. All "eyes" will see Him but not all eyes will recognise Him.

In the flesh no one knows what Jesus looked like before or after He resurrected.

And because Jesus said not to believe anyone proclaiming himself Christ, there is only one way to discern Jesus and that is with spiritual eyes...

Like the first time only the Holy Spirit revealed Jesus to Simeon Anna etc...After He was revealed by the angels.

Our hearts will be turned to our fathers....plural. There are two. There will be two camps when that "great and dreadful day of the Lord arrives." It will be great to those that have turned their hearts to The Father. It will be dreadful to those that turn their heart to their father. 1dsz5f1.gif

Benny, pass this along to Brit.

Matthew 17:11-12, “To be sure, Elijah comes and will restore all things. But I tell you, Elijah has already come, and they did not recognize him, but have done to him everything they wished.”

Malachi 4:5, See, I will send the prophet Elijah before the great and dreadful day of the Lord comes. He will turn the hearts of the children to their fathers; or else I will come and strike the land with a curse.”

And, “As the hour draws near, so shall I send my power upon you, and you shall go forth proclaiming my Word, and then shall you go forth proclaiming my judgment, and then shall you go forth and take my sword…”

“Look up and rest in the comfort that you have not chosen me, but I have chosen you from amongst all the face of this earth, to go forth in my name, as a Prophet of God from on High, to proclaim the Restoration, to proclaim that God will be coming to judge the wicked, and that He will smite the earth, and that He will destroy this nation.”

“As you go forth you will be my representative, you will be my prophet on the earth, you will point and you will say, ‘Thus saith the Lord..’ because it will be my Word, it will be my action, it will be my power.”

“It is written in my Word that Elijah surely must come first to restore all things, as I have stated in my Word so shall you go forth and restore all things.”

“So that is why I must send you out, my prophet, to declare that the Living God is not pleased with them, that He is not pleased with their sins, that He is not pleased with their actions, and He is not pleased with their idolatry.”

“That’s why I must send my prophet, that is why I am sending you out---to proclaim my judgments in the name of God, in the name of the Living God, in my name, the name of Jesus Christ.”

“This is why I must send you out---to proclaim devastating judgments so they will know that these judgments are from God!”

“That’s why I must send Elijah! That’s why I must send my judgments! That’s why my judgments will come out of your mouth! That’s why my judgments will be fulfilled! When you prophesy them, for then they will know that the Living God lives, and He has power over the elements and the water and the wind.”

“I tell you, build yourself up strong! For it is a mighty task! And you cannot wave and you cannot sway but you have to stand strong, knowing that I have sent you out there, for this ministry to rebuke and reprove the world of their sin and to bring forth my judgment.”

“Every word that comes out of your mouth will touch their hearts, and this will be the final way in which I will reach out to them, for these are the latter days and the end times are yet to come.”

“I will give you power over the waters; I will give you power over the fire; I will give you power over the weather; I will give you power over the wind; and you shall prophesy of this judgment over this nation.”

“The power that I shall give you will be so utterly destructible that there will be none that can come against you! You will be totally invincible! And the judgements which you will proclaim will cause much burden, much grief, much torment in the hearts of others that are looking on.”

INDICTMENT AGAINST GOD’S PEOPLE

“My people are estranged, they have left me; I ask you to share my burden, for I am grieved and I am heavy hearted, and the time is come, the time is come for me to bring forth my judgment for they have not turned their heads towards me.”

“Religion today is like leprosy; the people are indwelling in this false religion. It is like a leprosy that has grown on them and is ready to kill them and break them; and they are dying, they are dying and they do not know it. They are in the pit and they do not know it, they are blind and they do not know it. Religion is killing them, it is suffocating them and it has blinded them to the truth—the truth of My Word and of my vision for them.”

“The institutions of righteousness are corrupt, full of extortion, full of filth, full of strife.”

“For my axe is laid bare to every tree that bears not fruit; it shall be hewn down and cast into the fire; not one of those will be left for they bear not fruit, for they shine forth not my light, they are but a hindrance. They shall be hewn and cast down to make way for those who bear fruit and who shine forth my light; who bear fruit and water and feed the rest—those they shall make a way for. The rest shall be cut down for they are wicked and they thrive on their own juice that that juice will kill them.”

“From the most grievous sinner to the most righteous of God’s children, I have all given them a chance, I have all at one point called them; I have called them and asked them to come out and to serve me.”

“I have called them; I have searched each one’s heart and I have called them, from the most grievous, from the most terrible sinner, to the most righteous.”

“But I tell you! I have gone to each one of them. I have searched each one of their hearts and they have known that I have called them and I have tried to woo them to me and talk to them. But yet they turn not to me, yet they turn not to me.”

“I have given them a chance; I died on the cross for all sinners, I died on the cross for all without respect of persons, that all may be saved, that not one should be perished except the one that betrayed me.”

“They reject all that I have for them, so they shall see my judgment! For now they shall see what I have in store for them! For they chose the world, they chose the world!”

“I came for them all, without respect of persons I died on the cross; I bled for them! I bled and I died and I was crucified for them; and they know this! And they know this in their heart that I came to save them from the evil one, but yet they turn away, because they look at this world and they are choked by the cares of this world.”

“Woe be unto them! For I came to them just as I came unto you. I pleaded and I wooed them; I asked them to turn their hearts, I asked them to turn their face, that I would take care of their problems, that I would take care of their anguish and their grief and their troubles.”

RESTORATION

“The children of God shall be united under one Spirit, the Spirit of truth, the Holy Spirit. The Spirit that reveals all truth from the throne of God, the Spirit that reveals the beginning from the end, the end from the beginning; this is my Spirit, the Holy Spirit, it will unite all the true children of God.”

“There will be many who are hungry for the Word of God. There will be many who are hungry for the truth. There will be many who will come to the truth, and there will be many who will come to hear you preach the Word of God in all its purity; they are hungry for the truth; they are hungry for their God; and they will come to the light.”

“They must become warriors for Christ; they must proclaim the name of God; the light must shine forth, and the Word of God must be proclaimed.”

“The truth must go forth, the light must shine; the Word of God must be proclaimed; the evil spirits must be smashed; the saints must come out of their caves.”

“I say, go forth! Go forth and be a light! Show them! Show them that they can be healed, if they but come to my throne, if they but shed this falseness, the lies, the hypocrisy. Just come to my throne and I shall heal them and they shall be with me and we shall live in my Father’s mansion as one, as one family.”

“Only those that turn to me, and realize that I am supreme, and that only in me is there true reality, and that this world is not reality, that this world is just a stage; only those who turn to me and see me as their only hope, as their only salvation, as their true reality, them I shall pluck from this earth and they shall be with me in paradise.”

“I came that all may know me; I came that all may have the knowledge that you have; I came for all that I should reveal wisdom to all.”

You will be my light. You will be my beacon. You will be the light in the world in these latter days. And you will show them that the Holy God is pure without blemish or spot, and that He wants them to be pure without blemish or spot; that they should come to me as a pure bride, a bride that I am proud to show to my Father, that He will accept and say, “Yes, they are right, bring them into my mansion.”

“The bride will know, the bride will see that you are pure and holy; I ask that you be holy as I am holy, perfect yourselves, cleanse yourselves, make your paths straight, make sure that you are holy.”

“This is one of your missions, to bring about the Restoration; as they come to you they will see the truth and they shall perfect themselves through your word and your admonitions and your doctrine, they shall perfect themselves with spot or without blemish.”

“And, when they hear your voice, they will know that this is the voice of the Lord, this is the voice of their Shepherd. And my sheep will come, my sheep will come out of their hiding, my sheep will come out of their sins, my sheep will come out of their works, my sheep will come out of their vanity and frivolity and their programs!”

SAN FRANCISCO

“My heart is heavy, as I see all that goes on in this city my heart is heavy for all the sins and all the abominations and all the wickedness and evil that I see—I cannot bear, I cannot bear! I see sins that you don’t even know about, that you cannot even imagine, and my heart is weary; I ask you to look at this city the way I look at it.

This city is evil and wicked and my judgment is so right for this city; every citizen, every citizen hates God, they walk in their own ways, they walk in their own lust, they walk in their own depravity, they are wretched and they are naked and they are hungry and they don’t even know it. Their face they turn towards themselves, they try to glorify themselves, they try to adorn themselves, they try to cover up, but I see their hearts, their heart is far from me, and my heart is heavy, I am very sad and I am very heavy hearted.

This city hates God and it hates me; the mention of my name and they turn their head and they harden their heart and their back stiffens and they do not want to speak of me; my name itself is like a bad word in this city; this city hates God and this city hates me.

The sins of this city cry out to me to avenge this city with my wrath; this city is evil! The sins of this city are worse than Sodom and Gomorrah! The wickedness that prevails! The wretchedness! The emptiness!

This is why I have brought you to this city as a light—that you will show this city that the Living God sees their sins and He is ready to avenge them!

I cannot speak of their sins, I cannot speak of their wickedness and evil; I am so heavy! I am so heavy hearted! But this city grows in wickedness and evil every day and I am ready to lay my hand bare! I am ready to pierce my sword through their hearts! So they know that I am alive and that they are hurting me, and they are hurting who gave them the very breath which they breath is from me, and they turn their heads away from me, they turn their hearts away from me!
I am grieved! I am very sad! But my justice I will mete out with my wrath and my judgment! I ask you to see this city! I ask you to see their eyes! I ask you to see their hearts the way that I see them! I am grieved! You must see this city the way I see it. So that when you bring forth my judgment you will know it comes with all justice! I ask you to see this city the way I see it!

Raise your arm and take my sword; you will be my instrument to bring forth my vengeance, my wrath.

This is the day, this is my day of fury, for I am very angry with the wicked and my wrath shall come upon them.

When the sun shines brightest, that is your time, when the sun shines brightest and is right over head, you shall enter the crowd and you shall stand in their midst, you shall proclaim my name, you shall uplift my standard and you shall call my fire, you shall bring down my sword and they shall burn!

My fire shall come down and burn the wicked, they shall be as stubble; they shall burn as tares but the righteous shall stand; you shall tread the wicked and they shall not hurt you.

The wicked shall be stamped like pulp on the ground and my wrath shall be manifest; the day is at hand and you shall manifest my wrath! The fire of the Lord shall burn bright!

As the Lord moves in with judgment and wrath, the demons shall move out with anger and fury, and there shall be fire and there shall be smoke and there shall be stench so strong that the righteous will have to turn their head because the stench will be so bad; the judgment of the Lord will fall strong upon this city.

This city is San Francisco, this “pretty”, this so-called “glorious” city of San Francisco shall be abased, shall be abased, shall become like cinders, they shall burn, this city shall burn, this city shall be abased, because my Word will cut their lies, their hypocrisy, their sin, and their evil, shall cut them asunder, and this city will be abased.

I have looked upon this city and it is wicked, it is wicked; and as you go forth in the gap, and as you confront the enemy, you will tell them, you will tell them of the coming wrath and doom that this city will experience, you shall tell them that not one stone will be left unturned.

And they will look at you and they will think that you are mad; but you will tell them that the Living God has said that this city will be destroyed, not one stone will be left unturned, because I have visited this city and I have seen no good.”

AMERICA

“As I have given you visions and messages of my judgment and wrath, so will you go forth. And so will you proclaim in graphic detail of my judgments, and of my fire, and of death all over this land; and of waters that will rise, and of the stars that will darken, and of the wind that will rush.”

“You shall prophesy of this, and I will give you power over the waters, I will give you power over the fire, I will give you power over the weather, I will give you power over the wind, and you shall prophesy of this judgment over this nation.”

“I have forsaken them now, my wrath shall come and you shall prophesy in graphic detail of their judgment, of their death, of their sure doom, and of the dead that will be from one end of this nation to the other.”

“This whole nation shall see my fire, this whole nation shall be in confusion, this whole nation will be under strong delusion, they will not know, I shall shake their very roots, I shall shake their very roots and they will not know what has happened.”

“For the fire will sweep through this nation. And there will be strong confusion and strong delusion. And there will be panic everywhere, there will be panic everywhere, people running to and fro, trying to hide with no place to hide; they will jump into the sea for they will not know where else to go; and they will drown and they will kill themselves.”

“My fire will sweep through this nation. And there shall be turmoil; and there shall be chaos; there will be no place to hide, no place to hide. For I will seek them out of their dark corners and I shall pull them and I shall kill them; for those that reject me, there shall be no place to hide, no place to hide.”

“They will look at you as a fool. They will look at you as a fool masquerading in a fool’s paradise. For you speak of death; for you speak of judgment; for you speak of darkness; for you speak of fire; for you speak of my wrath. And they, all they see is sunshine, green trees, fair weather, and they frolic in their folly, and they have fun, and they enjoy, and they laugh, and they drink, and they become drunken, and they sleep.”

“For all of a sudden my fire will come! For all of a sudden my judgment will come! For all of a sudden when they are asleep and when they are drinking and when they are frolicking in their folly, my judgment will come! And they will know that a prophet has been among them, for he has spoken of it, of my judgment, and my wrath.”

JESUS CHRIST

“I am the Son of the Living God, and no man comes to the Father but through me, and all those who reject me, Jesus Christ, they are condemned! There is no way out for them! Their sin is that they reject me, they reject me—the Son of God—they deny me, and those who deny me I shall deny to the Father.
They deny my crucifixion. They deny that I died for their sins and that they can live with me in paradise as long as they come to me and believe in me. They deny that I can give them everlasting life; they deny me—this is their sin—that they deny the Living God, the Son of the Living God, and that they are wicked, they choose evil, and they choose wickedness.
This is their sin—they deny the Living God. They deny the Son of the Living God. They deny Jesus Christ, for I am all truth, I am all righteousness, and without me there is no way, they shall perish, this is the truth, that if they come to me, the Son of the Living God, I shall give them everlasting life.
It is me that shall save them, I am the Savior of the world, I am the Redeemer, I am Everlasting Life, I am green pastures, I am everlasting, and I shall give them everlasting waters so that they will never thirst and they shall never hunger.
For my Father so loved the world that He sent me on earth to walk the earth and to set sinners free, to set the down trodden free, to give sight to the blind, to heal the wounded, to heal the sick, to set free the captive.
I came to save sinners; I came to save sinners from the fires of everlasting hell; I came to set them free; I came to give them everlasting life; that they might have life abundantly, that they may live with me and my Father in my Father’s mansion. I came for all. And for those who accept me and for those who serve me, they shall be given abundantly; they shall be treated as sons of God and kings of heaven!
But for those who reject me, for those who reject the Son who the Father has sent, there is only fire left. For I came, for I came to save them out of the pit, for I came to save them, for I came for them that they may live with me.
But if they reject me, if they reject me, woe! For I only can send them to hell. For that is all that is left for them, for that is all that my Father has left for them. He has done all that He can. He has sent them His only Son, to serve, to serve them, to save them, to bring them to the truth, to bring them to the life, but they would rather choose darkness.
I am the light, I am the way, I am the truth! No man comes to the Father but through me. I am the Son of God and only through me can they see the Father; I am the Son of god, I lay down my life for them, and if they reject me there is no other way; I am the way, I am the truth, I am the light; my Father sent me to save the world, and those who receive me I will receive, I will accept, I will tell of them to my Father, and they shall be in heaven with me and they shall be in paradise, their name shall be written in the Book of Life and they shall have everlasting life.
But those who reject me there is no way but hell, there is no other way, for I am the way, I am the truth, I am the light; I was sent to save sinners, I was sent to save them.”

I ask both you and Brit to 'test the spirits' of this message.

This message was given between March 1983 and May 1984 as personal instructions to THE PROPHET HIMSELF.

Both prophets, Elijah and Moses, carry the SWORD OF JUDGMENT and their ministries are designed to 'restore' God's people to holiness, found in both the Christian element and their counterparts in the Jewish element.

Doesn't Scriptures tell us that God MUST JUDGE HIS OWN HOUSE before He can judge the wicked word?

There are two distinct elements to God's people, found in both the Christian element and their counterpart, the Jewish element.

You can see a clear parallel between the Philadelphia chuch, who are 'spared the hour of trial' (Revelation 3:10) and their counterpart, found in the 144,000, who are sealed and called FIRSTFRUITS.

BOTH of these elements are already found to be holy and they are 'taken', leaving the main harvest found in the remaining 'six' spiritual churches of Revelation 2 and 3 and their Jewish counterpart found in Israel, those who come to accept Jesus Christ their their Messiah.

Both of the Two Witnesses are sent to deal with God's people, those in America (the churches who need to overcome) and their brothers, found in Israel, who miraculously come to accept Jesus Christ as their Messiah.

Elijah is sent to America during Hillary's Presidency (a parallel found in the foretaste of I Kings) while Moses, the Giver of the Law, is sent to Israel in the first half of the seven, to bring the Jews to accept Jesus Christ as their Messiah. All of this occurs in the first half of the seven, after Daniels accord (Daniel 9:27).

Both will preach the purity of God's word to bring God's people to holiness and they will carry the SWORD OF JUDGMENT! This is how each will be recognized by God's people.

If you want graphic details, email me on d09e@sbcglobal.net for further explanation.

God bless,

Ed

Just some observations:

If the prophecy in Malachi 4:5-6 was intended to prophesy that Elijah the specific individual would be sent back to prophesy, then I don't see how Jesus could have said about John the Baptist,"'And if you are willing to receive it, he is Elijah who is to come.'" Granted, the Jews weren't "willing to receive it" (and by "it" I take Jesus to mean His being the Messiah), but still, Jesus could not have said John the Baptist was "Elijah who is to come" in any sense if the prophecy was regarding Elijah the individual, and not a ministry similar to Elijah's. If this is correct, then the "end-time Elijah" will simply be an individual (or two individuals) who come "in the spirit and power of Elijah", much like John the Baptist did.

By that do I correctly assume that you and Godsword believe the "two witnesses" are a literal "two" individuals or do you think they are two groups? I see what has been stated but I want to be certain.

The Lord has said it. Elijah [John the Baptist] has already come .... before the great and terrible day of the Lord .... which is still future. The Lord looks long here and is projecting the 70th week. Malachi's vision is compressed. Many visions cover a long time lapse, but do not record all of the details of time passing. Most view a beginning and ending framework.

Matthew
17:5 While he yet spake, behold, a bright cloud overshadowed them: and behold a voice out of the cloud, which said, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased; hear ye him.

17:6 And when the disciples heard it, they fell on their face, and were sore afraid.

17:7 And Jesus came and touched them, and said, Arise, and be not afraid.

17:8 And when they had lifted up their eyes, they saw no man, save Jesus only.

17:9 And as they came down from the mountain, Jesus charged them, saying, Tell the vision to no man, until the Son of man be risen again from the dead.

17:10 And his disciples asked him, saying, Why then say the scribes that Elias must first come?

17:11 And Jesus answered and said unto them, Elias truly shall first come, and restore all things.

17:12 But I say unto you, That Elias is come already, and they knew him not, but have done unto him whatsoever they listed. Likewise shall also the Son of man suffer of them.

17:13 Then the disciples understood that he spake unto them of John the Baptist.

The Lord's two prophets in Revelation will be "two" individuals only. Nothing in the vision states otherwise. Also these will be mortals and not individuals resurrected from the past. They must have protection during their service because they will have physical bodies. They will be killed by the beast and will then need to be resurrected to immortality.

First, I want to make it clear that Boxer and I are not a "tag-team". smile.gif Second, my view of the Two Witnesses is that they will be two individuals (the two "branches" of Zechariah 4), who will represent both the "Jews" and the Gentiles (the "cultivated olive tree" and the "wild olive tree" mentioned in Romans 11 - the "two olive trees" of Zechariah 4) and also the two "faithful" churches of Revelation 3 (Smyrna and Philadelphia, persecution and love - the "two candlesticks" of Zechariah 4). I believe one will be Jewish (descended from Jacob/Israel, basically) and one will be a Gentile.

Stephen
eliyahu,

It is possible that Elijah could be one of the two, but he will not serve before the second 1,260 days of the 70th week. The problem with the idea is two fold:

1.The Lord said that Elijah already came in the first century. He said he was John the Baptist. Malachi "called" him Elijah. This must be the case .... otherwise there would be a noted contradiction. There is a similar comparative regarding the Lord and David in scripture.

2.The prophets who come during the 70th week will be mortals who will be killed and resurrected. This would mean that Elijah would have to take on a physical body again, then killed, and then resurrected again to immortality.

What we can know for sure is the the Lord is going to send two human prophets to Israel in the time of Jacob's trouble. These two will be instrumental in standing against the beast and his followers and will demonstrate the Lord's unquestionable authority and ultimate resurrection power.

What other thought might you have?

There is some kind of "Elijah" movement. I'm not sure what it all entails...but I have come accross some on the net who seem very very interested in Elijah.

I had to stop communicating with someone that I really really liked in a forum after learning how deep he was into talking to some entity that was named Elijah who was known as the Prophet of Doom.

The Old Testament promised that Elijah would come to the Jewish people. Some who believe in reincarnation think this is what occurred with John the Baptizer being the fulfillment of Elijah's coming.

The Angel Gabriel announced to Zecharias that his son's name would be called John in Luke 1:13. He goes on to say in verse 15 that he will be great in the sight of the Lord and "shall drink no wine or strong drink and will be filled with the Holy Spirit from his mother's womb." Verse 17 says of John, "he will also go before Him (The Lord) in the Spirit and power of Elijah," which is a ministry of reconciliation, would have the "hearts of the fathers turned to the children and children turning to their fathers."

To claim that Elijah is John the Baptist is to teach reincarnation. The premise is that a spirit in a former body comes back to be born in another body. At the very least, it is transmigration. The Bible has never taught this.

In Matthew 11:13, Jesus states: "For all the prophets and the Law prophesied until John." (Jesus calls him "John" not "Elijah." Elijah is included with 'all the prophets' who came before John. In verse 14, Jesus says "and if you are willing to receive it, he is Elijah who is to come." John wore a garment of camel's hair and a leather belt and preached in the wilderness. This was the same attire that Elijah wore (2 Kings 1:8), bringing attention to the Jews of the similarity of John's mission to that of Elijah's. Prophecy has many patterns and sometime dual or more fulfillments.

Malachi had predicted that before the Messiah's appearing, Elijah would come as a forerunner (Mal. 4:5-in relation to the day of the Lord). If the people had been willing to receive Jesus as the Messiah, then John would have filled the role of Elijah. Jesus then tells them to heed His words. If John fulfills Elijah's coming then Jesus is the Messiah.

Jesus pointed to John the Baptist as a type of fulfillment of Elijah's coming but he was not a reincarnation.

This is proven in John 1:20 when the Jews sent out the priests and Levites to investigate John's ministry. They ask him if he is the Christ. He states emphatically "No!" They ask him again if he is Elijah, John answers "I am not." This is not a temporary memory loss for John that Jesus has to correct later. In verse 25, John the Baptist is asked, 'Why do you baptize if you are not the Christ nor Elijah nor the prophet?' In verses 25-27 John points to the Messiah who is coming after him. He states that it is he who is the forerunner of Malachi 3:1. In Luke 1:76, we see that John's father, Zecharias, is filled with the Holy spirit and says that his child will be called the prophet of the highest and will "go before the face of the Lord and prepare His ways again.' This relates John's ministry to Mal. 3:1, 4:5, and Luke 1:17. John labored in the same Spirit and power of the former prophet by calling people to repentance and he was preparing them for the salvation that Christ would later bring.

Both are Elijah and John the Baptist are forerunners. Elijah was promised to come for the second coming not the first, therefore he is not John the Baptist. Mal.3:1 promised an unnamed forerunner Mal.3:1: "Behold, I will send My messenger, and he shall prepare the way before Me: and the Lord, whom you seek, shall suddenly come to His temple, even the messenger of the covenant, whom you delight in: behold, he shall come, saith the LORD of hosts." Malachi speaks of two messengers one that will prepare the way for the Lord, this is none other than John the Baptizer who is foretold in Isa.40:3-4 as "The voice crying out in the wilderness: prepare the way of the Lord; make straight in the desert a highway for our God."

In Mal 4:5-6 he is named " Behold, I will send you Elijah the prophet before the coming of the great and dreadful day of the LORD. We are told the prophet Elijah will come before the great and terrible day of the Lord (the tribulation). In Luke 4:18 when Jesus stood up in the temple and quoted Isa.61:1-2 he stopped at proclaiming the acceptable year of the lord and did not read of the day of vengeance of our God. This is reserved for the tribulation period in which Elijah will preach before the day of the Lord! Which makes it clear that John could not be Elijah for it was not the Day of Vengeance; it still is in the future. Again, if we go back to what the angel Gabriel said: he (John) would come "in the spirit and power" of Elijah (Luke 1:17), coming in this ministry does not make him literally Elijah the prophet.

One of the strongest testimonies that John is not Elijah is on the Mount of Transfiguration (Matt. 17:3; Luke 9:30; Mark 9:4-5). Elijah and Moses appear and Jesus talks to Elijah. The disciples recognize him as Elijah in his original form, not as John the Baptist. One must either concede that they are 2 different people or that John the Baptist turned back into Elijah. Again, this would promote reincarnation or transmigration of a spirit going from one body to another. The Bible does not teach either. If one insists on this view then they must deal with II kings 2 where in vs. 9 Elisha asks for a double portion of Elijah's spirit upon himself. He is promised this will be so if he sees his mentor taken to heaven. In vs. 11-12 he does see this event and Elijah's mantle falls on Elisha. In vs. 14 he struck the water and it divided just as it did before with Elijah. The Sons of the prophets see this and say, "The Spirit of Elijah rests on Elisha." If Elijah's spirit was upon Elisha then he was not taken to heaven! John had the same Spirit upon him that Elijah did. This did not change Elisha to be Elijah but gave him the same authority through the ministry of the Spirit. If one is going to use the Scripture that John the Baptizer literally came in the Spirit and power of Elijah then how did he rest on Elisha and become a double portion no less. Obviously verse 9 this means in like ministry, and function, to having authority. John came "in the spirit and power of Elijah," the similarity being his fiery preaching and being in the wilderness (Luke 1:17; John 10:41). There are patterns that repeat themselves in the scriptures as a certain aspect is expressed in different people.

Let's now sum up this unbiblical view. In II Kings 2:1, we find Elijah taken bodily into Heaven. For one to enter Heaven they must be transformed (1 Cor. 15:50-54), changed to an immortal body, a body which is no longer subject to death since corruptible flesh cannot enter into Heaven. If Elijah came back as John the Baptist, and was killed, this would be impossible according to Scripture. For one who has had a changed body to be equipped for Heaven, does not turn back to mortality. If we look at it more carefully in II Kings 2:11 Elijah never experienced physical death so for him to come back in another body means he reincarnated not only in Spirit but in body too, and the Bible never teaches either one of these. Elijah did not die, so the Scripture is not talking about his reincarnation as John the Baptist (2 Kings 2:1,11).The Bible teaches resurrection, a totally different concept.

It's obvious that when Jesus spoke in Matt. 11:13-14, concerning John being "Elijah who is to come." He was not speaking in a solid, literal sense. Jesus was metaphorically comparing 2 different things that also shared some similarities and functions. The Jewish scriptures always taught resurrection, not reincarnation. Each person is given 1 body to live in and will be reunited with that same body in the resurrection. When one takes the whole body of scripture instead of isolating verses, we find the consistent teaching that refutes any concept of Elijah becoming John the Baptist and then becoming Elijah again.

Elijah?

Who, Me?

Is the Bible Contradictory About Johnny B's Identity?

Eric Vestrup and J. P. Holding

Matt 11:14 And if ye will receive it, this is Elias, which was for to come.(see also Mark 9:13)
John 1:21 And they asked him, What then? Art thou Elias? And he saith, I am not.
In this alleged contradiction, a false dichotomy has been set up here. Keener [Matthew commentary, 439] notes that later rabbis interpreted Malachi as saying that Elijah, who had not actually died (but was taken up in a whirlwind), would himself return. JB was aware that he was the Elijah-to-come predicted in Malachi and told the Jews in John 1 something to the effect of "I am not Elijah in the sense that you think of it." Support for this thesis comes from the fact that John presents the Jews in his gospel as being blind to the Scriptures. And with their mistaken notion of who and what the Messiah should be like, it is not unreasonable at all to think that they might be mistaken on the nature of the Elijah-to-come mentioned in Malachi. The Jews might have been thinking that this Elijah-to-come would be the "real live" Elijah of the books of the Kings physically returning from heaven, and JB's denial was aimed at refuting the notion that he was the "real and live" Elijah. It would have been interesting to hear JB's response to the question "Are you here in the spirit of Elijah?" (A reader noted such a distinction in Luke 1:17: "And he will go on before the Lord, in the spirit and power of Elijah...")

We have therefore two reasonable possibilities that explain the situation nicely without forcing Jesus or JB to be lying. And unless the above possibilities can somehow be shown to be unreasonable, no dogmatism can be behind the charge.

A reader has also made this interesting observation, concerning these verses:

Hosea 3:5 Afterward shall the children of Israel return, and seek the LORD their God, and David their king; and shall fear the LORD and his goodness in the latter days.
Ezekiel 34:23-24 And I will set up one shepherd over them, and he shall feed them, even my servant David; he shall feed them, and he shall be their shepherd. And I the LORD will be their God, and my servant David a prince among them; I the LORD have spoken it.
In these passages the Messianic king is called "David" -- and this is the same sense in which John is properly called "Elijah" by Malachi 4.

We now add a few issues from a Jewish "anti-missionary" site:

And where in our Scriptures is it written that Elijah would be mistreated, as Jesus claimed (Mark 9:13)?
The allusion here is a midrashic one to 1 Kings 19:1-3, "And Ahab told Jezebel all that Elijah had done, and withal how he had slain all the prophets with the sword. Then Jezebel sent a messenger unto Elijah, saying, So let the gods do to me, and more also, if I make not thy life as the life of one of them by to morrow about this time. And when he saw that, he arose, and went for his life, and came to Beersheba, which belongeth to Judah, and left his servant there." Those who doubt such an application is possibel should reckon with

Is anyone considering possibly more than TWO even?

Yeah I'd say the same.

Yeah like a stunt double.
Gzuz the Man Child
No...what I mean is
Corporate - United into one
Body - as in physical body

Corporate Body

We are the BODY of Christ, but also that body is CORPORATE

If I mean Corporate Body(group) ... that would be a double body, yes.

That's not what I mean.

Christ died and took his other body with him (after it was resurrected and changed) yet he continues his ministry in his corporate body...."The body of Christ" or better said, Christians.

I had to study this verse a little bit to understand it. It does not say John the Baptist fulfilled the Elijah prophecy in Malachi.

The key word to understand this verse is "if"

Jesus knew they weren't willing to recieve it, (His Messiahship on a National level) before He came at His first Advent. It was not a surprise to Him at all. The OT prophets had even foretold that they would not mourn for the one they pierced until the last 3 days of the Great Tribulation.

Therefore, they were not ready to recieve, Elijah was not sent, John the Baptist was sent to prepare the way for the Lord, Elijah had to wait 3,500 years which is ironic because it also symbolizes in God's Years 1000 yrs/1 day the length of time of his final ministry of 3.5 yrs....

"It does not say John the Baptist fulfilled the Elijah prophecy in Malachi."

But the Lord did. I would suggest that your study must be from His perspective. You can find the answer if you do this. The "great and terrible day of the Lord" is still future and JB has already come ..... before it. The Lord has said this and gives no other explanation. The Lord does not count time lapse between His first and second coming in His prophetic visions of the scriptures. And He has told no one how long.
