Full Version: Israel’s Prophetic Time Clock

3am
I just read an article by Jim Fletcher posted in "General Discussions, What do you say?
Link http://www.christian-forum.net/index.php?showtopic=13780
Which raised a question.
First I want to make it clear that I am in total agreement with Mr. Fletcher's main premise, that the Bible does in fact predict the future!!!
However, I see myriads of problems with his dispensational approach to prophecy.

My understanding of one of the basic tenants of dispensationalism is:

“With Israel’s rejection of the Messiah and His death taking place after the sixty-ninth week (Dan 9:26), the completion of the six restoration goals for Israel (v24) is left for the Seventieth Week…. Because dispensationalism adheres to the principle of literal interpretation and recognizes the scriptural distinction between God’s program for Israel and for the church, it understands the historical completion of Israel’s restoration must take place in a future week.” Mel Couch, General Editor, “Dictionary of Premillennial Theology, p77.
As Dr. Ironside puts it: “The prophetic clock stopped at Calvary. Not one tick has been heard since.” (“The Mysteries of God,” p. 54.)

But in the article mentioned above, the writer said:
Recently, on a short walk from the King David Hotel to Jerusalem’s Old City, I stopped and marveled at a neighborhood within a stone’s throw of the city walls. This is the area first settled in the 19th century, after Jewish philanthropist Moses Montefiore subsidized housing outside the Old City walls. These dwellings thus fulfilled Zechariah 2:4 in a remarkable way. And this is but one of thousands of confirmations of Scripture.
It is no secret that Dispensationalists celebrate 1948 and 1967 as remarkable fulfillments of the prophecies foreseeing God gathering Israel back into the land.

Here the question that begs to be answered; “If Israel’s prophetic clock stopped ticking until after the rapture, then how can 1948 and 1967 be a fulfillment of Israels' prophecies?
Stephen
There are absolutely no events (not one verse) recorded in visionary prophecy between the end of the 69th week (about 33 A.D.) and the beginning of the 70th week which is still pending. Israel's return to the land is "ramp up time" ..... stage setting only. The nation has to be in the Land before the 70th week can begin ..... and the nation may be there for an extended period of time ..... only the Lord knows when He will trigger the 70th week. 1948 and 1967 events are not recorded in the visions ..... neither is 70 A.D. Some have and try to fit events into the void, but none are there. All unfulfilled visions are still pending the 70th week and they do not fit any other previous time frame. If one does not understand this precept they will never get it right ..... never.

What is the difference between "Ramping up" and fulfilling a prophecy?
It sounds like you are agreeing at least with me that 1948 and 67 are NOT a fulfillment of the gathering prophecies. smile.gif
That raises a lot of questions for pre-tribbers.
If those victories were not a fulfillment of prophecy then, did God gather Israel into the land at those times without telling His prophets? That seems impossible because Amos said, "
Surely the Sovereign Lord does nothing without revealing his plan to his servants the prophets (Am 3:7).
And if the gathering of Israel back into the land is not a fulfillment of the Gathering promises, then when will they be fulfilled? (Zec 2 as mentioned above, Deut 30, Ezekiel, Amos etc.)
If the "ramping up", brings Israel into the land, before the 70th week, then when will God fulfill his promises to gather them? And who did gather them in 48 and 67?

Peter taught that the prophecy in Joel 2:28f which concerned Israel, was fulfilled to the church on the day of pentecoste which took place after the 69th week.

I am going to throw a big "monkeywrench" into this topic and give everyone something to spiritually chew on. Israel's Prophetic timeclock begins "ticking" with the "going forth of the commandment" to build, and to build again Jerusalem. Lets revisit something before any conclusions are drawn. WHAT WOULD CONSTITUTE A 'going forth of a commandment' or a proclamation from a king, in the time the commandment went forth? Is it written? is it verbal? how do we recognise it as being authentic? We can't even begin to decide WHO RECIEVED this "going forth of the commandment to restore Jerusalem, until we establish, what the paramaters are to identify this "commandment" MOst have accepted the return of Nehemiah in 444, as the return that started the "timeclock". However, lets do something different. INstead of "looking back" from when the Lord was crucified to determine the start of the time period lets project ourselves back to 400-538 B.C. , and investigate the different "going forth of the commandments that occured," that was given to the Jewish people, looking forward instead, to identify who truly recieved this.
To give you a little "hint", compare Nehemiah, Chapter 2, which did occur in 444 B.C, when Nehemiah returned, with Ezra Chapters 7-8. Concentrate on "heart attitude" and identify who it was, the Hand of the Lord was on. Was there a written proclamation? was there a verbal proclamation, was there gifts given?? Who was truly trusting in the Lord to perform his will, and who was operating from his own works?[indent]
Here is something else to "chew on"

DAniel 9:26 "and AFTER THREESCORE AND TWO WEEKS SHALL MESSIAH BE CUT OFF".
[indent] WHY HAVE WE ACCEPTED THE ASSUMPTION THAT THE 7 "WEEK" TIME PERIOD, AND THE 62 "WEEK" TIME PERIOD HAVE TO BE ADDED TOGETHER? Doesen't the word of God explicitly state that the Messiah was cut off after 62 weeks of years (434 years) and NOT 69 WEEKS OF YEARS (483 YEARS). If he was, would'nt that leave 8 "weeks " of years left to be fulfilled, or 56 years? Could this be the length of the final generation???

I answered your question pure and simple. Peter's reference to Joel's vision would be a good one for you to study and to understand as to why Peter said what he said amd when he said it. The vision will not be fulfilled until the time of the end during the 70th week ..... for the believing remnant of national Israel. You need to dig deeper on this one. Debating here would serve no purpose since our views are miles apart. You will just have to struggle with your own. Understanding the frame work of the 70 weeks of years decreed for national Israel in its proper context is a must for those who want to grasp prophetical truths.

I dont think I need to struggle with this one at all. No debate is necessary. It is crystal clear for all to see. Peter viewed the pouring out of the Spirit as what Joel had spoken about. The text below is clear, those who read it can decide for themselves. To save space, I abbreviated the text, however, anyone can read it from their Bible and see for themselves. While it is also clear, that Peter is not saying the entire prophecy was fulfilled that day, To try to deny that Pentecost was the beginning of the fulfillment of Joel's prophecy is simply another example of a desperate attempt to preserve the pre-trib Rapture.

Acts 2:1 When the day of Pentecost came... 2 Suddenly a sound like the blowing of a violent wind came from heaven and filled the whole house where they were sitting. 3They saw what seemed to be tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them. 4 All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them.
5Now there were staying in Jerusalem God-fearing Jews from every nation under heaven....12 Amazed and perplexed, they asked one another, "What does this mean?"
13 Some, however, made fun of them and said, "They have had too much wine. 14 Then Peter... addressed the crowd: "Fellow Jews and all of you who live in Jerusalem...15 These men are not drunk, as you suppose.... 16 No, this is what was spoken by the prophet Joel:
17" 'In the last days, God says, I will pour out my Spirit on all people........

To acknowledge that Peter declared Pentecost was a fulfillment of prophecy would place the "last days" in the church age and utterly destroy the dispensational idea of the future 70th week and pre-trib rapture. I would also ask, where is any reference to Daniel's 70th week in Acts 2?

Praise the Lord! The outpouring of the Holy Spirit was a marvelous fulfillment of Bible Prophecy!

You are correct, that Israel's prophetic time clock started clicking with the decree to restore and to rebuild Jerusalem. It ticked all the through the entire 70 weeks and quit ticking when Israel finally rejected Jesus as Messiah. I am working on another post to prove that, but as for the begining of the 70 weeks, here is something to think about.

The Starting Point for the 70 Weeks
The Bible says there would be 69 weeks starting from the decree to "restore and rebuild Jerusalem" until the Messiah the prince comes. This is a clear description of the parameters.
The book of Ezra records three decrees:
1. The decree form Cyrus (EZ 1:2-4) issued in 538 BC which gave the Jews permission to return to Judah and rebuild the temple. But the temple is not the same as the city. No mention is made in this decree to rebuild the city. This cannot be the decree Daniel referred to.

2. The second one is found in 520 BC in Ezra 6:1-12 when Darius I issued the decree for the second time to rebuild the temple. This decree also had nothing to do with rebuilding Jerusalem.

3. The third time is the charm. This decree was given to Ezra himself (7:12-26) and was issued by king Artaxerxes to install a local government with public officials, restore the authority to requisition funds from the royal treasury, teach the people God's law and even institute capital punishment in Jerusalem. Ezra immediately returned to Judea in the summer of 457BC to start work on the city. The book of Ezra is not written in strict chronological order. The decree is in chapter 7 but the story of what happened is found in Ezra 4 and later in Nehemiah, who completed the work specified by Artaxerxes in his decree to Ezra in Ezra 7.

The date of 457BC for the decree is one of the most firmly established dates in the Old Testament. It was found in the margin references of most KJV Bibles following Bishop Usher's chronology for many years until, scholars who accepted the theory of evolution began rejecting Usher's young earth chronology as built from the Bible. More recently, Usher has come under attack by dispensationalist scholars who recognized that the year 457 is incompatible with their future 70th week scheme. Dr Sigfreid Horn published a very scholarly and in depth study of that date found in his book, "The Chronology of Ezra 7" published in 1953 and revised in 1970 with additional support found in the newly discovered and translated "Babylonian Chronicle."

The year 457 as the starting point would place the end of the 69 weeks in 27AD.
The "anointed one would appear at the end of the 69 weeks in 27AD. "Anointed One" is actually a translation of the original Hebrew word, here which is Messiah. The KJV doess not translate Messiah. It leaves it in Hebrew. However that obscures the meaning "Anointed." Jesus was Anointed in 27 AD, when he was Baptized by John the Baptist, symbolized when the Holy Spirit descended on him like a Dove. The voice of the Father in heaven said at that time, "This is my beloved Son with whom I am well pleased." This anointing began His ministry! (Luke 3:23)
It is no concidence that his happened in 27AD.
Nor was it a coincidence that after He was baptized, Jesus said, "The time is fulfilled (Mark 1:15)" What time? The 69 weeks that pointed to the Messiah.

That puts the two periods together to form one block of time [69 weeks] until Messiah comes.
That makes the phrase, "after the 62 weeks" would be the same point in time as the end of the 69 weeks.

I need to "expand" the scope of what the Lord revealed to me. COnsider the following. During the time of Jesus, the people were lookinig for the Messiah. They knew the prophetic scriptures. What they didn't know at the time, that there would be TWO COMINGS OF THE MESSIAH. The pictures of the Messiah being a suffering servant, and a Conquering commander, had many thinking that there would be possably TWO messiahs, what they didn't realize that there would be only one, but coming at two different times. [indent] We understand this, because we have hindsight. Daniels 70 week prophecy, when broken down and rightly divided, reveals Both advents of the Messiah. There is TWO RESTORATIONS OF JERUSALEM SPOKEN OF. (to build, and to build again). There is two portraits of the Messiah. (The Messiah-suffering servant, The Prince-Conquerring Commander). AND THERE IS TWO TIME FRAMES (Shall be seven weeks-49 years, and threescore and two weeks-434 years.) We are then given the result of the first time frame- "and after threescore and two weeks shall Messiah be "cut off". There was a foreshadowing of the 434 year time period.
QUOTE
Exodus 12:40 "Now the sojourning of the children of Israel, who dwelt in egypt, was four hundred and thirty years. And it came to pass at the end of the four hundred and thirty years, even the selfsame day it came to pass, that all the hosts of the Lord went out from the the land of Egypt.
Moses, who is a picture or "type" of Messiah, delivered the Children of Israel out of 'bondage' after 62 weeks of years. This was a picture of what was to come, of the Messiah. THIS IS THE REASON WHY THE LORD LEFT HIS PEOPLE IN 'EGYPT' FOR THIS LENGTH OF TIME.
[indent] WHEN EZRA RESTORED THE LAW, THEY WERE ONCE AGAIN IN BONDAGE TO THE LAW, THIS is why we have what is called the 400 "Silent years" Jesus once again, set his people free after 62 weeks of years under the Law, that was restored by Ezra. [indent]There has been alot of discussion, both pro and con as to when this resoration of the Law acually took place, under Ezra. Some put it at 457 B.C. others put the possabilty of it occuring approx 401 B.C. The confusion has been brought on by not being able to rightly identify the ruling king when the proclamation went forth. If it was under the second Artaxerxes, it would put the going forth of the commandment to restore Jerusalem at 401 B. C. this would fit the 62 week scenario, and would not counterdict the word of God. ADDING THE 7 WEEK PERIOD TOO THE 62 WEEK PERIOD IS A DOCTRINE I THINK WE NEED TO BE VERY CAREFUL WITH. THERE IS ABSOLUTELY NOTHING IN THIS SCRIPTUE THAT INSTRUCTS US TO DO SO, WITHOUT MAKING ASSUMPTIONS!
Stephen
445 B.C. is the correct start date. The decree to return and build the city.

The time frame of all unfulfilled visionary prophecy is still future. All fulfilled prophecy has been fulfilled through the end of the 69th week of the 70 weeks of years decreed for national Israel. A week of years is the Jewish “heptad”. Each year represents 360 literal prophetic days. This calculates to a 7 year period of time or 2,520 days. The 69 weeks of years represent a time period of 173,880 prophetic days or 483 years.

This time frame began at the decree to return and build the city Jerusalem from the Babylonian captivity (under Persian rule) in 445 B.C. 483 prophetic years lapsed in about 33 A.D. and the Lord was then cut off at His first coming. There is one “heptad” (one 7 year period) remaining for the completion of the decreed amount of total time of 490 years and this 7 year period is still future.

It is significant that the nation of unbelieving Israel is existing as an independent political entity in the Land of Israel today after many centuries of domination by the Gentiles and exile from their land. They are there to experience the 70th week decreed which is still pending.

The nation's continuous intransigence against God's providence and direction has resulted in the loss of His personal guidance. Israel is still in this condition at the present time. God's long term preservation of Israel's national identity is specifically for His ultimate plans.....not Israel's self-generated nationalism.

The years following the reign of Israel's prominent kings David and his son Solomon included political division of the nation and subsequent invasion and assimilation of ten of the tribes of Israel by the Assyrians. Successive dominance of the remainder of the nation followed by the three empires of neo-Babylon, Persia, and Grecia.

The neo-Babylonians conquered what was left of the remnant, took many captives, and relocated the population. It was under the rule of the next empire, Persia, that a remnant of Israel was allowed to return to the Land of Israel (445 B.C.). This began the count down of the 70 weeks of years (490 literal years). 483 years have lapsed with one 7 year period yet to be experienced by Israel after their second return from the nations of the Gentiles to the Land of Israel. [Daniel 9:24-27]

If the death of Jesus occurred around 33 A.D. then the following calculation can be made. The time lapse would be 444 calendar years to the first century from 445 B.C. plus 33 additional years to equal 477 years. The conversion factor for 360 day prophetic years can be calculated by dividing 365 by 360 which is 1.0138. Prophetic years are shorter so there are more of them included in the time frame of 477 calendar years.

There are 483.5826 (477 x 1.0138) prophetic years in the time frame. If one adjusts this result by leap year days, the final calculation is very close to 483 years (69 weeks of years). Daniel's vision of the time frame allows for this amount of time to lapse after which the Messiah Prince would be cut off and have nothing. The last segment of 7 years (1 week of years) is still yet future and requires Israel's return in part to the Land of Israel from the nations. This final 7 years will include future prophetic events leading up to the visible return of Israel's Messiah who is Jesus Christ.

The covenant of 70 weeks of years is described in the 9th chapter of Daniel. The Lord will confirm this covenant by executing the last 7 years including the 6 objectives for national Israel at the time of the end which is still pending. These objectives must be met for national Israel at that time since most of the nation has been in the state of unbelief. Some will turn and accept their Messiah, Jesus Christ. This peroid will be exactly 2,520 prophetic days long and there will be another 30 days and 45 days added. The Lord will turn on Satan's beast and his kingdom and destroy it during the 30 day period ending with the battle of Armageddon. The Lord will then appear to the world and gather all of the survivors of the 70th week and separate them for enterence into His kingdom during the next 45 days.

Satan and his fallen angelics are coming to the earth at the beginning of the 70th week and it will take the first 1,260 days for him to develop his kingdom in the Middle East including the invasion and occupation of Israel, Jerusalem, and the temple mount. He will also gain a large human following the will worship him as a god. He will then rule most of the Middle East for the next 1,260 days (42 months). The Lord will then force him and his followers to Armageddon and destroy his kingdom within 30 days.

There is nothing recorded in the scope of the visionary prophecy time frame presented in Scripture between the end of the 69th week and the beginning of the 70th. The end time frames of the O.T. visions of the prophets, the Lord’s discourse in Matthew 24, Mark 13, Luke 21, and Revelation beginning in chapter 4 are all about the 70th week which is still pending. The Lord’s discourse concerning the time of the end is all focused upon the generation of national Israel that will be living during the 70th week. No known events on the earth are included in the time lapse between the end of the 69th week and the beginning of the 70th. There have been many attempts to find them or fit some in, but they are not there. All of the time lapse of last 2,000+ years up to this day is not in the visions.

His discourse is presented three times and all are focused upon the future 70th week. Luke has the armies of the “antichrist” (little horn, beast) surrounding Jerusalem and Matthew has the abomination of desolation standing in the holy place (temple mount). Luke does record the fate of the apostles in the first century (“before all of these things” – before the events of the future 70th week). Everything else is the same. There is no “70 A.D.” picture in the scope. 70 A.D. events occurred long after the 69th week and were certainly not part of the 70th which is still pending. The people of the prince that shall come were not the Romans in the first century, but will be the followers of the "antichrist" during the 70th week. The 6th king "position" that John sees, the king that "is", will be the little horn of Daniel's visions and not a Roman king in the first century. John sees the "things that shall be hearafter" .... the 70th week which is still pending.

The Lord also addresses the mystery kingdom of the Church (composed of a few Israelites and many Gentiles) in the parables of Matthew 25. His focus is on His “harpazo” which will separate professing Christianity into those that are ready and those that are not. The first (both dead and living together) will enter the heavenly dimension and the rest of the living will remain to experience the 70th week. Some of national Israel and the nations will repent and turn to the Lord during His hour of trial, most will not. Some of these will be martyrs and some will survive the period. The development of this mystery kingdom began at Pentecost and will culminate when the fullness of the Gentiles are added. He will then execute His "harpazo" and ensuing hour of trial.[Romans 11:25]

70 A.D. is not in the scope and this can be verified by comparing O.T. visions of the 70th week with the historical record of the Roman invasions of 70 A.D. They simply do not match up. There are many events in visionary prophecy that are not a reflection of 70 A.D. The 70th week is a defined time lapse of 7 years and this balance of unfulfilled prophecy will begin at the onset of the period and will then continue beyond the end of it. Neither is the Church in view in this scope of the 490 years which is composed of both Jew and Gentile. The Church has no national identity and is not in the scope on the earth during the time frame. The Church will be in heaven observing the events of the period and will return with the Lord at the end of it. Revelation switches back and forth from heaven to the earth during the period. The Church can be found in the heavenly state and identified as Revelation unfolds.

The precept of the time frame of the 70 weeks decreed for national Israel should be applied to all unfilled prophecy written in Scripture for accurate exegesis. All of the content of future events can be identified and fit exactly into this time frame. Most traditional interpretations do not incorporate this method of exegesis and all of them have difficulties that require some level of apologetics, selective allegory, contextual extraction, misapplication of Scriptures, and deliberate elimination. I would suggest the student of Bible prophecy test the precept of the 70 weeks decreed against all known Scriptural passages related to visionary prophecy. I will be glad to assist any one with reconciliations related to the pre-conceptions of other views.

James has a problem with a pre-conception of another view. Perhaps you can help him reconcile it to your view. smile.gif
Sorry about that, I just couldn't resist. smile.gif

Acts 15:5 Then some of the believers who belonged to the party of the Pharisees stood up and said, "The Gentiles must be circumcised and required to obey the law of Moses."
6The apostles and elders met to consider this question. 7 After much discussion, Peter got up and addressed them: "Brothers, you know that some time ago God made a choice among you that the Gentiles might hear from my lips the message of the gospel and believe. 8 God, who knows the heart, showed that he accepted them by giving the Holy Spirit to them, just as he did to us. 9 He made no distinction between us and them, for he purified their hearts by faith. 10 Now then, why do you try to test God by putting on the necks of the disciples a yoke that neither we nor our fathers have been able to bear? 11 No! We believe it is through the grace of our Lord Jesus that we are saved, just as they are."

12The whole assembly became silent as they listened to Barnabas and Paul telling about the miraculous signs and wonders God had done among the Gentiles through them.

13 When they finished, James spoke up: "Brothers, listen to me. 14 Simon has described to us how God at first showed his concern by taking from the Gentiles a people for himself.

It is important to notice that when James makes his next statement about the words of the prophets being in agreement with this, the this is referring to James statement that God was at that time "taking from the Gentiles a people for himself. It is also significant to notice that the time frame for this meeting and God's Work with the Gentiles was definitely after the 69th week of Daniel's Vision and before the suggested future 70th week. Now in a remarkable piece of exegesis, James declares;

15 The words of the prophets are in agreement with this, as it is written:
16" 'After this I will return
and rebuild David's fallen tent.
Its ruins I will rebuild,
and I will restore it,
17that the remnant of men may seek the Lord,
and all the Gentiles who bear my name,
says the Lord, who does these things'
18that have been known for ages.

19"It is my judgment, therefore, that we should not make it difficult for the Gentiles who are turning to God.

It should be obvious to all that James saw the work of God bringing Gentiles into the church as agreeing with the visionary prophet Amos who foresaw the rebuilding of David's fallen tent and restoring and rebuilding the ruins. In other words, James saw the prophecy of Amos being fulfilled by Gentiles coming into the church some time in between the 69th and 70th week or during the supposed Gap.

It is also significant that James totally disregarded any ethnic or geographic boundaries when citing Amos. Instead of using geography as a norm, James used Jesus as the norm and center for his exegesis. He saw Christ's church as being the object of the OT prophecies.

Sounds like James needs to take another class on exegisis. sad.gif
Or perhaps we might be safer following his method of interpreting prophecy. That is that all prophecies are fulfilled in Christ! smile.gif

I could list many many more examples of the very same thing but let me just mention one, Peter.
Peter did not try to fit the OT prophets into a future 70th week fulfillment.
1 Peter 1:10 Concerning this salvation, the prophets, who spoke of the grace that was to come to you, searched intently and with the greatest care, 11 trying to find out the time and circumstances to which the Spirit of Christ in them was pointing when he predicted the sufferings of Christ and the glories that would follow. 12 It was revealed to them that they were not serving themselves but you, when they spoke of the things that have now been told you by those who have preached the gospel to you by the Holy Spirit sent from heaven. It is interesting that Peter believed that the Prophets, [OT] who prophesied about national Israel, were actually being led by the Spirit of Christ in them.
Not only was the Spirit of Christ in the OT prophets, but the Spirit pointed them to the sufferings of Christ and the glories that would follow.
Since Christ was "cut off" [the cross, as you have correctly observed], after the 69th week;
"After the sixty-two ‘sevens,’ the Anointed One will be cut off" (Da 9:26).
The glories that follow the cross, which the prophets forsaw, are being fulfilled after the 69th week and before any future 70th week. That does not fit the timeframe so carefully laid out above.

In fact, Peter even believed that those OT prophets were not serving themselves [that is national Israel] but you [the church consisting of believing Jews and even Gentiles], when they spoke of the things that have now been told you.
In other words, there is no way to fit the prophecies into a time frame of a future 70th week. They are being fulfilled now to the church.
Tahat means the OT prophets were looking to the the church age when;
Gal 3:28There is neither Jew nor Greek, slave nor free, male nor female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus. 29If you belong to Christ, then you are Abraham's seed, and heirs according to the promise.
There is no future 70th week. The future is now!!!! The prophecy is Now!!!
Praise the Lord, Jesus has become for us the fulfillment of all promises (2Cor 1:20)!

If you two who know so much and can't even get it straight why should we bother?

Let me return to something basic. Why would God declare 70 weeks...go 69...and then take a rest and hundreds of years later pick it up again...That's what doesn't make sense to me. 70 weeks should be 70 weeks...Did God say...69 weeks and then I'll let you take a break and we'll pick it up later.. It just doesn't even make sense to me.

But regardless of that...to say that Israel is in the land of their own accord is heavy stuff to consider. Do we think God would even allow it? Seems doubtful to me...

We can't go back to the garden of our own accord...

It would have to mean that the devil is working through the Jews to bring confusion and mess with the understanding of the time line...because it certainly seems like a big mess listening to this huge gap in understanding.

Miki,
I certainly do not want to give the impression that I think I know so much.
I have lots to learn. Every time you start thinking that you've got it all, God has ways of keeping you humble. Unfortunately, sometimes the old flesh comes through and you say things, give impressions or perceptions that you think you have it all together. Or I get more contentious than I want to be. Like some one posted, I sounded disingenuous. I am working hard at not doing that. If if fail, forgive me. I pray every day that God will keep me humble.
But He did empower his people to preach the word of God Boldly!
One thing I am very sure about and Passionate about, and that is that Jesus has to be at the center of all prophecy and that we are safe if we study and apply the methods that Jesus and the NT writers used.
I have tried to give clear examples of these.
If you follow their lead [not mine], the prophecies are very simple and clear.
To tell you the truth, I read some posts that go on and on about this nation and that king and these years and those years and I cant follow them. And I have been preaching and studying Revelation for 34 years. There are just too many gaps for me.
It breaks my heart, to see beautiful Christ centered prophecies manipulated around to portray the antichrist and nations moving around on the apocalyptic maps. It reminds me of Mary when she said, ""They have taken my Lord away, and I don't know where they have put him."

Excellent question. I believe when you keep it simple, it is easy to understand. I believe that when God says you have 70 weeks, he means 70 weeks. I have asked a zillion times for one specific example in the bible of a stated specific period of time given by God that had gaps in it. But all I get are well known examples of OT prophets using the term, "the day of the Lord" to combine the first and second coming of Jesus. Those are not specific time periods like 70 weeks, or 70 years or 35 days. Nowhere are those time periods anything other than consecutive time periods.
I have posted elsewhere, a very simple alternative to the gap and it puts Jesus right in the center of this prophecy.
I am not asking you to accept this, but to prayerfully ask God to show you the truth.
Regardless of what others say, Find an old KJV with margin references, and look at the date given for Ezra 7:1, Aratxerxes decree to restore and rebuild Jerusalem. It is 457 BC.
Add 69 weeks of years, and it equals 27AD
Daniel said 69 weeks until Messiah (KJV) the NIV translates Messiah and put "Anointed One." That is exactly what the word Messiah means.
Jesus was in fact anointed at His baptism by the Holy Spirit for His ministry as Messiah in 27AD.
Then Daniel said that "After" the 69th week he would be cut off. This is often used as an idiom for death, "cut off from the land of the living." The cross would have to come after the 69 weeks. Here is where the gap has real difficulty. Verse 24 said they have 70 weeks to do 6 things and two of them are to make atonement for sins and usher in everlasting righteousness. Only Jesus can do that and He did it on the cross. He died for us and became for us our righteousness (1Cor 1:30). Since that has to be within the 70 weeks, then any attempt to move the 70th week some 2000 years into the future, leaves out the cross.
So where in the 70th week is the cross? It is simple.
Verse 27 says he would confirm the covenant for one week and in the middle of the week he would put an end to sacrifice and offerings. Confirm the covenant means "to strengthen" to make it stronger. Jesus did that with his own blood, when He died on the cross and the vail was torn from top to bottom in 31AD. He put an end to the sacrifices in God's plan. True the Jews tried to sew up the vail and keep the sacrifices, but you cannot change God's plan. The sacrifices are over.
It is simple if you keep the focus on Jesus.
His ministry was 3 1/2 years on earth. 27AD plus 3 1/2 years is 31AD, the cross.
He gave Israel another 3 1/2 years to accept Him.
That is why he told them to stay and go to the Jews first.
But when Stephen was stoned, at the feet of Saul who became Paul, the Apostle to the gentiles (34AD),
the vision for national Israel was sealed up. Stephen's vision of Jesus standing in heaven, was the last vision for national Israel, the vision was sealed. From there on the NT writers clearly apply the OT prophecies of Israel to the church. Jesus Himself is the new Israel, and the Temple along with those who are in Him.
Now the Jew is saved in the same way the Gentile is saved, by faith in Christ! We are all grafted into the one tree, Christ!

The other option is to split off the 69th week and make the one who puts an end to offerings be the antichrist. And Salvation to be focused on national Israel, who never could get it right, instead of Jesus who always gets it right.

My goal on this forum is to show that there is another option that in my opinion, is very simple, keeps the focus on Jesus and makes a lot more sense. That does not mean there are no questions or difficult passages. They are there, we will be studying God and His character for eternity. But I think the questions are much fewer and easier to deal with this way.

You are so right! It is heavy stuff.
But as I have posted else where, God does allow Satan room to do his thing in order for all to see that God is Just (Job 1,2). Satan can work through Israel, he did it all through the OT. And a false prophet is just that "False." But in order to deceive anyone, he needs to look like the genuine thing. What better way than to use Israel to make it look like prophecies are fulfilled and cause millions to take their eyes off of what AntiChrist is doing now in the church because they are looking for a future Antichrist to appear in a rebuilt temple in Jerusalem? After all, as you well know, Satan is no dummy. BTW, we, the church, are now in the Heavenly Jerusalem (Heb 12:22) Which Jerusalem do you think Satan is most interested in attacking?
I am going to make a new topic about the problem with understanding "All Israel will be saved" to mean that every Jew will be saved.

The basic answer to your questioning is found in this passage of Scripture. The Lord is waiting for the fullness of the gentiles to be added to the Body of Christ. Aren't we fortunate ..... for if He chose a shorter time frame we may not have ever existed. He knows how many He wants and then He will close the door. [Matthew 25:1-13]

Romans
11:1 I say then, Hath God cast away his people? God forbid. For I also am an Israelite, of the seed of Abraham, of the tribe of Benjamin.

11:2 God hath not cast away his people which he foreknew. Wot ye not what the scripture saith of Elias? how he maketh intercession to God against Israel saying,

11:3 Lord, they have killed thy prophets, and digged down thine altars; and I am left alone, and they seek my life.

11:4 But what saith the answer of God unto him? I have reserved to myself seven thousand men, who have not bowed the knee to the image of Baal.

11:5 Even so then at this present time also there is a remnant according to the election of grace.

11:6 And if by grace, then is it no more of works: otherwise grace is no more grace. But if it be of works, then it is no more grace: otherwise work is no more work.

11:7 What then? Israel hath not obtained that which he seeketh for; but the election hath obtained it, and the rest were blinded.

11:8 (According as it is written, God hath given them the spirit of slumber, eyes that they should not see, and ears that they should not hear;) unto this day.

11:9 And David saith, Let their table be made a snare, and a trap, and a stumblingblock, and a recompence unto them:

11:10 Let their eyes be darkened, that they may not see, and bow down their back alway.

11:11 I say then, Have they stumbled that they should fall? God forbid: but rather through their fall salvation is come unto the Gentiles, for to provoke them to jealousy.

11:12 Now if the fall of them be the riches of the world, and the diminishing of them the riches of the Gentiles; how much more their fulness?

11:13 For I speak to you Gentiles, inasmuch as I am the apostle of the Gentiles, I magnify mine office:

11:14 If by any means I may provoke to emulation them which are my flesh, and might save some of them.

11:15 For if the casting away of them be the reconciling of the world, what shall the receiving of them be, but life from the dead?

11:16 For if the firstfruit be holy, the lump is also holy: and if the root be holy, so are the branches.

11:17 And if some of the branches be broken off, and thou, being a wild olive tree, wert graffed in among them, and with them partakest of the root and fatness of the olive tree;

11:18 Boast not against the branches. But if thou boast, thou bearest not the root, but the root thee.

11:19 Thou wilt say then, The branches were broken off, that I might be graffed in.

11:20 Well; because of unbelief they were broken off, and thou standest by faith. Be not highminded, but fear:

11:21 For if God spared not the natural branches, take heed lest he also spare not thee.

11:22 Behold therefore the goodness and severity of God: on them which fell, severity; but toward thee, goodness, if thou continue in his goodness: otherwise thou also shalt be cut off.

11:23 And they also, if they abide not still in unbelief, shall be graffed in: for God is able to graff them in again.

11:24 For if thou wert cut out of the olive tree which is wild by nature, and wert graffed contrary to nature into a good olive tree: how much more shall these, which be the natural branches, be graffed into their own olive tree?

11:25 For I would not, brethren, that ye should be ignorant of this mystery, lest ye should be wise in your own conceits; that blindness in part is happened to Israel, until the fulness of the Gentiles be come in.

11:26 And so all Israel shall be saved: as it is written, There shall come out of Sion the Deliverer, and shall turn away ungodliness from Jacob:

Once the Lord is satisfied with the "fullness" of the gentiles added He will then immortalize the Body of Christ into the kingdom of heaven. Then the 70th week decreed for Israel, that He has intentionally delayed, will begin with His judgment process of an unbelieving world (the nations) including unbelieving Israel. This time frame will span the last 7 years of the 490 years decreed. A week of years is the Jewish "heptad" which equals 7 prophetic years of 360 days each.

A remnant of the nation of Israel will turn to Him as the result of His pressuring (the time of "Jacob's trouble") and He will restore the kingdom to these mortal Israelites (the "elect" of His brethren ..... the believing remnant) who will inhabit and populate His earthly kingdom for 1,000 years. Those Israelites martyred for their faith during the 7 year period will be resurrected at the end of the period and added to the Body of Christ. Some gentiles will also turn and repent during His judgments of the 70th week, but very few. These will either be martyred for their faith or will survive. The survivors will enter and populate His earthly kingdom and they are called the "sheep" of the nations. Those few believing gentiles martyred for their faith will be resurrected at the end of the period and will be added to the Body of Christ. All unbelieving goats who survive the period of both Israel and the nations will not enter His earthly millennial kingdom. All of the unbelieving dead (possibly billions) of the period will be killed as the result of the Lord's judgments and they will be lost forever. They will face the Lord's judgment at the end of His millennial reign on the earth and their spirits (the tares) will be burned in His lake of fire.

70 Weeks of Years
The time frame of all unfulfilled visionary prophecy is still future.

Added resource:
Throughout the centuries, people who reject the Bible continue to challenge its authenticity. In spite of this, the Hebrew Scriptures remain infallible. In testimony to the entire world, the LORD provides the final atonement through which fallen mankind can be redeemed and reconciled to Himself. In John 5:39 Jesus tells us, “Search the scriptures; for in them ye think ye have eternal life: and they are they which testify of me.”

Jesus’ words were certainly true, for Moses and the prophets described the Messiah with great detail throughout the Scriptures. But with pinpoint accuracy, flawless precision and in absolute defiance to the unbeliever, it was through the prophet Daniel that the LORD God revealed the exact month and year in which His Son the Messiah would make His entrance into the world and establish the New Covenant. This prophecy, found in Daniel 9:24-27, records the words of the angel Gabriel who tells the prophet:

Daniel 9:24 “Seventy weeks are determined upon thy people and upon thy holy city, to finish the transgression, and to make an end of sins, and to make reconciliation for iniquity, and to bring in everlasting righteousness, and to seal up the vision and prophecy, and to anoint the most Holy.”
Daniel 9:25 “Know therefore and understand, that from the going forth of the commandment to restore and to build Jerusalem unto the Messiah the Prince shall be seven weeks, and threescore and two weeks: the street shall be built again, and the wall, even in troublous times.”
Daniel 9:26 “And after threescore and two weeks shall Messiah be cut off, but not for himself: and the people of the prince that shall come shall destroy the city and the sanctuary; and the end thereof shall be with a flood, and unto the end of the war desolations are determined.”
Daniel 9:27 “And he shall confirm the covenant with many for one week: and in the midst of the week he shall cause the sacrifice and the oblation to cease, and for the overspreading of abominations he shall make it desolate, even until the consummation, and that determined shall be poured upon the desolate.
In this passage, the angel Gabriel appears to Daniel near the end of Israel’s seventy-year captivity in Babylon. King Nebuchadnezzar had previously conquered Israel in 607/606 BC and took the people captive. The book of Jeremiah predicts the eventual return from this captivity and establishes the basis for Daniel’s beliefs. Daniel 9:2 states, “In the first year of his reign I Daniel understood by books the number of the years, whereof the word of the LORD came to Jeremiah the prophet, that he would accomplish seventy years in the desolations of Jerusalem.”

Regarding the land of Israel and its inhabitants, Daniel was fully aware of the prophecy written in Jeremiah 25:11: “And this whole land shall be a desolation, and an astonishment; and these nations shall serve the king of Babylon seventy years.”

Daniel was also aware that, after the seventy-years expired, the children of Israel would be allowed to return to their land. Jeremiah 29:10 tells us, “For thus saith the LORD, That after seventy years be accomplished at Babylon I will visit you, and perform my good word toward you, in causing you to return to this place.”

In the beginning of Daniel chapter 9, Daniel prayed. He confessed to the LORD God his own sins and the sins of his people that resulted in their punishment and their exile to Babylon. He expressed that they had all done wickedly and committed iniquity and rebellion against God. Also they had refused to hearken to the prophets and failed to keep His laws, commandments and statutes. Most importantly, Daniel was extremely concerned about whether or not his people had truly repented for their sins during their captivity. We can see this evidence in Daniel 9:13, “As it is written in the law of Moses, all this evil is come upon us: yet made we not our prayer before the LORD our God, that we might turn from our iniquities, and understand thy truth.”

Daniel was concerned about his people’s repentance for a reason. In Leviticus chapter 26, the LORD told Moses that if the children of Israel refuse to come to repentance and be reformed during their punishments, He would push the punishment to the next level and punish them yet seven times more for their continued hardness of heart. The next level would result in 490 years of additional judgment on top of the 70 years of punishment that was about to come to an end. The applicable passages from Leviticus chapter 26 follow:

Leviticus 26:17-18 “And I will set my face against you, and ye shall be slain before your enemies: they that hate you shall reign over you; and ye shall flee when none pursueth you. And if ye will not yet for all this hearken unto me, then I will punish you seven times more for your sins.”
Leviticus 26:20-21 “And your strength shall be spent in vain: for your land shall not yield her increase, neither shall the trees of the land yield their fruits. And if ye walk contrary unto me, and will not hearken unto me; I will bring seven times more plagues upon you according to your sins.”
Leviticus 26:23-24 “And if ye will not be reformed by me by these things, but will walk contrary unto me; Then will I also walk contrary unto you, and will punish you yet seven times for your sins.”
After nearly seventy years of exile, seven times the punishment for his people was more than Daniel could bear. Remembering Leviticus 26:40-43, Daniel began to repent on behalf of his people while reminding God of the everlasting covenant that He made with Abraham, Isaac and Jacob:

“If they shall confess their iniquity, and the iniquity of their fathers, with their trespass which they trespassed against me, and that also they have walked contrary unto me; (41) And that I also have walked contrary unto them, and have brought them into the land of their enemies; if then their uncircumcised hearts be humbled, and they then accept of the punishment of their iniquity: (42) Then will I remember my covenant with Jacob, and also my covenant with Isaac, and also my covenant with Abraham will I remember; and I will remember the land. (43) The land also shall be left of them, and shall enjoy her sabbaths, while she lieth desolate without them: and they shall accept of the punishment of their iniquity: because, even because they despised my judgments, and because their soul abhorred my statutes.”

Daniel, in deep concern for his people, bitterly pleaded to the LORD God of Israel for mercy and forgiveness. According to Daniel 9:24-26 the angel Gabriel, a messenger of God, came to him with both good news and bad news. Though the children of Israel would be allowed to return to their land after the seventy years were expired, it would be ‘seventy weeks’, or seventy years times seven (490 years), through which reconciliation for iniquity, everlasting righteousness and the anointing of the most Holy place would occur. Because the children of Israel had failed to truly repent during their captivity, they would be punished. They would be allowed to return to their land, but there would be seven times more punishment for their stubbornness as promised in Leviticus chapter 26. For an additional seventy weeks of years, they were placed under the authority of pagan kings.

According to Daniel 9:25, Gabriel told the prophet when the time period would begin. It would commence with the decree to restore and build Jerusalem. Furthermore, it would be sixty-nine weeks of years, or 483 years from the time that the decree would be given to rebuild Jerusalem to the time that the Messiah the Prince would fulfill the prophecy. Finally, according to Daniel 9:26, the Messiah would be cut off or killed at the end of this sixty-nine weeks or 483 year period.

Seven Weeks plus Sixty-two Weeks: Why the Breakdown?
Many people question why the sixty-nine weeks in Daniel 9:25 are broken down into increments of seven weeks and sixty-two weeks. In order to address this issue, it is important to realize that when the exile began, the LORD considered it important that the land of Israel itself would keep her Sabbaths and rest. One of the reasons why Israel was punished and exiled into Babylon was because the people failed to keep the Sabbath rest for the land as commanded in Leviticus chapter 25. This is explained in 2 Chronicles 36:20-21 as follows:

2Chronicles 36:20-21: “And them that had escaped from the sword carried he away to Babylon; where they were servants to him and his sons until the reign of the kingdom of Persia: To fulfil the word of the LORD by the mouth of Jeremiah, until the land had enjoyed her sabbaths: for as long as she lay desolate she kept sabbath, to fulfil threescore and ten years.”
It is important to realize that God used cycles of seven years or weeks of years in dealing with Israel and counting time. The seventy weeks or 490 year prophecy of Daniel that began with the decree to restore and build Jerusalem was a continuation in seven-year cycles that included the Sabbath rest of the land. God did not end these cycles when Israel returned to the land. However, they continued until the coming of the Messiah and the fulfillment of the prophecy.

Leviticus chapter 25 describes what must take place when the children of Israel are brought into the land. Leviticus 25:1-2 begins, “And the LORD spake unto Moses in mount Sinai, saying, Speak unto the children of Israel, and say unto them, When ye come into the land which I give you, then shall the land keep a sabbath unto the LORD.”

The Bible explains in Leviticus 25:3-4 that there would be six years of sowing and reaping. However, on the seventh year the land should remain inactive, and rest. “Six years thou shalt sow thy field, and six years thou shalt prune thy vineyard, and gather in the fruit thereof; But in the seventh year shall be a sabbath of rest unto the land, a sabbath for the LORD: thou shalt neither sow thy field, nor prune thy vineyard.”

Then Leviticus 25:8-10 explains that after seven sabbaths of years, or 49 years, on the tenth day of the seventh month which coincides with Yom Kippur, the trumpet will sound proclaiming liberty to all the inhabitants throughout the land. This fiftieth year, beginning on Yom Kippur, is called the year of Jubilee:

“And thou shalt number seven sabbaths of years unto thee, seven times seven years; and the space of the seven sabbaths of years shall be unto thee forty and nine years. (9) Then shalt thou cause the trumpet of the jubile to sound on the tenth day of the seventh month, in the day of atonement shall ye make the trumpet sound throughout all your land. (10) And ye shall hallow the fiftieth year, and proclaim liberty throughout all the land unto all the inhabitants thereof: it shall be a jubile unto you; and ye shall return every man unto his possession, and ye shall return every man unto his family.”

This proclamation, which began on the fiftieth year on Yom Kippur, had a dual significance. On this day, the entire nation of Israel became clean from all their sins when the high priest provided the sacrifices and burnt offerings. We can see in Leviticus 16:30, “For on that day shall the priest make an atonement for you, to cleanse you, that ye may be clean from all your sins before the LORD.”

During the year of Jubilee, every debt between each individual was wiped clean and declared null and void. God erased every person’s debt and completely restored each individual to Himself and to each other. Leviticus 25:11 clearly defines that, “A jubile shall that fiftieth year be unto you: ye shall not sow, neither reap that which groweth of itself in it, nor gather he grapes in it of thy vine undressed.”

The combination of both the Day of Atonement and the Year of Jubilee provides the complete picture of the future reign of King Messiah. Mankind will be reconciled with the Holy God of Israel and liberty will be proclaimed throughout the land.

According to Daniel 9:26, at the end of the first seven weeks or 49 years, Israel would celebrate the Jubilee. This would then provide the foundation for the next sixty-two weeks of years or 434 years. The Jubilee would focus Israel on the coming of King Messiah to atone for sin and proclaim liberty throughout the land.

The Persian Kings
Even though Israel's exile into Babylon officially began in approximately 607/606 BC, Nebuchadnezzar’s final destruction of Israel did not occur until the summer of 586 BC.1 Then in 539 BC, the Babylonian Empire fell to the Persian King, Cyrus the Great. The Persian Empire lasted until 332 BC, when it was defeated by the Greek general Alexander the Great at the battle of Guagemala River.2 In this year, the Greek Empire took control of the Persian Empire and dominated most of the civilized world.

According to recorded history, the Persian Empire ruled over Israel for a total of 207 years, from 539 BC to 332 BC. This world empire began with Cyrus the Great and the fall of Babylon. It ended with Alexander the Great's victory. These facts are important since the Persian kings played critical roles with respect to Bible prophecy, especially in regards to the ‘Seventy Weeks of Daniel.' One of these kings, Artaxerxes I, issued the commandment to restore and build Jerusalem.

Secular history supports and justifies ALL dates of the reigns of the Persian kings mentioned in the Bible. When reviewing the history of these great kings it is important to be aware that, similar to the titles Caesar and Tsar, Artaxerxes is merely a title given to a Persian king. It is not a name at all!

Throughout the duration of the Persian Empire, there were several kings who were known as Artaxerxes, including Cambyses who was the son and successor of Cyrus the Great. In addition, the king who provided the decree to restore and build Jerusalem was also known as Artaxerxes. Some historical resource materials refer to him as either Artaxerxes I or Artaxerxes Longimanus. He was the son of Xerxes, who was also called Ahasuerus in the Bible.

Throughout recorded history, the chronological order of the Persian kings from Cyrus the Great to Darius III is supported and documented as follows:

Cyrus the Great 559 BC to 530/529 BC3
Cambyses also known as Ahasuerus 530/529 BC to 522/521 BC4
Pseudo Smerdis also known as Artaxerxes 521 BC
Darius the Great 521 BC to 485 BC5
Xerxes also known as Ahasuerus 485 BC to 465 BC6
Artaxerxes I 465 BC to 425/424 BC7
Darius II 423 BC to 404 BC8
Artaxerxes II 404 BC to 359 BC9
Artaxerxes III 359 BC to 338 BC10
Darius III 338 BC to 332/330 BC11

The Persian Kings in Secular and Biblical History
The Hebrew Scriptures identify all six kings from Cyrus the Great to Artaxerxes I. As a result, the Bible is in total agreement with recorded history. The historical events in the Hebrew Scriptures end with the book of Nehemiah and the reign of Artaxerxes I. The key Biblical references to these six kings are as follows:

The First King: Cyrus the Great. He became the king of Persia in 559 BC. In 553 BC, a date that is firmly established in the Annals of Nabonid,12 Babylonian historical records, he revolted against Media and in 550 BC conquered the whole of the Median kingdom. Then in 546 BC, Cyrus conquered the kingdom of Lydia.13 In the following year, he took the whole of Asia Minor.14 While large parts of the Babylonian territory were conquered, he did not conquer the Babylonian Empire and establish his world dominance until 539 BC. Cyrus ruled over Israel from 539 BC to 530/529 BC. He issued the decree during the first year of his reign to allow the Jews to return home and rebuild the temple in Jerusalem.15

Ezra 1:2 “Thus saith Cyrus king of Persia, The LORD God of heaven hath given me all the kingdoms of the earth; and he hath charged me to build him an house at Jerusalem, which is in Judah.”

The Second King: Cambyses also known as Ahasuerus [see Ezra 4:6]. He was the son and successor of Cyrus the Great. He reigned from 530/529 BC to 522/521 BC BC. Like his father, he continued in world dominance. After conquering Egypt in 526 BC, he was made Pharoah.16 He was assassinated while traveling back from Egypt with his army in 522/521 BC.

The Third King: Pseudo Smerdis also known as Artaxerxes - an impostor to the throne. He ruled in 521 BC. After hearing that the Jews were rebuilding Jerusalem without any authorization while they were rebuilding the temple, Ezra 4:7, 21 reveals that he issued a decree ceasing all building until a further decree would be given. He was killed by his successor King Darius before providing that decree.

The Fourth King: Darius the Great. He ruled from 521 BC to 485 BC. He was a remote cousin of Cambyses. He was a strong ruler. He built the great cities of Susa and Persepolis and a tremendous road system throughout the empire. He tried to expand his empire westard and invaded Greece. In 499 BC, some of the Ionian Greek cities in the Greecian settlements along the turkish coast rebelled against Persia, and in 494 BC, Darius finally stopped the uprising.18 Having set out to conquer the rest of Greece, his troops were defeated at the battle of Marathon in 490 BC.19 The Persian wars, beginning with this battle, would last for a total of 42 years into the reigns of his son and grandson. Darius reversed Pseudo Smerdis' decree and allowed the temple to be completed. It was during his reign that the temple was finished in 516 BC.20

Ezra 4:24 “Then ceased the work of the house of God which is at Jerusalem. So it ceased unto the second year of the reign of
Darius king of Persia.”

The Fifth King: Xerxes, also known as Ahasuerus. He reigned from 485 BC to 465 BC. Xerxes became the king of Persia at the death of his father Darius the Great in 485 BC. In 480 BC he took 200,000 men and 1000 ships and moved by land and sea through Thracia, in eastern Greece, and eventually defeated the Greeks at the battle of Thermopylae.21 Then in 479 BC, Xerxes took Athens, but while he was burning the temples of the Acropolis, the Athenians quashed his fleet of ships in the battle of Salamis.22 Then in the same year, his army was defeated at the battle of Plataea.23 He burned many Greek cities and stirred the Greeks against the Persians.

The prophet Daniel specifically foretells that the fourth king of Persia, who was Xerxes, will incite the anger of Greece. Daniel 11:2 states:

“And now will I shew thee the truth. Behold, there shall stand up yet three kings in Persia; and the fourth shall be far richer than they all: and by his strength through his riches he shall stir up all against the realm of Grecia.”

There can be no doubt that Xerxes’ battles with Greece and the destruction of their cities and temples created a lasting hatred and hostility. It was also the fulfillment of Daniel’s prophecy. In 465 BC, Xerxes was assassinated by one of his sons. In the Bible, he is the king in the Book of Esther:

Esther 1:1-2 “Now it came to pass in the days of Ahasuerus, (this is Ahasuerus which reigned, from India even unto Ethiopia, over an hundred and seven and twenty provinces) (2) That in those days, when the king Ahasuerus sat on the throne of his kingdom, which was in Shushan the palace,”

The Sixth King: Artaxerxes I, Longimanus. He ruled from 465 BC to 425/424 BC and was the grandson of Darius the Great and son of Xerxes. His empire was marked with peace and tranquility. Under his rule there was no expansion. In 449 BC, he ended the Persian Wars started by Darius the Great.24 Jewish history records that his elder brother murdered him in 425/424 BC in a power struggle for the throne.25 In Biblical history, most importantly, he was the king that provided the decree to restore and build the city of Jerusalem. Artaxerxes I reigned during the time of Nehemiah as evidenced in the book of Nehemiah:

Nehemiah 5:14 "Moreover from the time that I [Nehemiah] was appointed to be their governor in the land of Judah, from the twentieth year even unto the two and thirtieth year of Artaxerxes the king, that is, twelve years, I and my brethren have not eaten the bread of the governor."

Alexander the Great
The people of Greece never forgot what happened to their cities and their temples at the hands of the Persian Empire during the reign of Xerxes in 479 BC (Daniel 11:2). It would be approximately 147 years later, in 332 BC, when Alexander the Great and his army took vengeance against the Persian Empire by defeating king Darius III at the historic battle of Guagemala River. Daniel 11:3-4 prophesies the end of the Persian Empire:

“And a mighty king shall stand up, that shall rule with great dominion, and do according to his will. (4) And when he shall stand up, his kingdom shall be broken, and shall be divided toward the four winds of heaven; and not to his posterity, nor according to his dominion which he ruled: for his kingdom shall be plucked up, even for others beside those.”
At the height of his power, Alexander the Great died. As a result, his empire was divided into four smaller kingdoms in fulfillment of Daniel 11:4.26

Cyrus, Darius and Artaxerxes
According to the Scriptures, three Persian kings provided decrees in support of the return of the children of Israel from their captivity in Babylon. This is found in Ezra 6:14 which identifies each of the kings in order of his reign as Cyrus, Darius and Artaxerxes:

“And the elders of the Jews builded, and they prospered through the prophesying of Haggai the prophet and Zechariah the son of Iddo. And they builded, and finished it, according to the commandment of the God of Israel, and according to the commandment of Cyrus, and Darius, and Artaxerxes king of Persia.”
The Bible is clear that Cyrus the Great decreed that the house of God, the temple, would be rebuilt. Written almost two hundred years prior to the reign of Cyrus, Isaiah 44:28 shows, “That saith of Cyrus, He is my shepherd, and shall perform all my pleasure: even saying to Jerusalem, Thou shalt be built; and to the temple, Thy foundation shall be laid.”

Cyrus made his edict during the first year of his reign, in approximately 538 BC. Though Cyrus acknowledged that Jerusalem would eventually be rebuilt, he would only provide the decree to rebuild the temple and not to rebuild the entire city of Jerusalem. Ezra 1:2-3 confirms this:

“Thus saith Cyrus king of Persia, The LORD God of heaven hath given me all the kingdoms of the earth; and he hath charged me to build him an house at Jerusalem, which is in Judah. (3) Who is there among you of all his people? his God be with him, and let him go up to Jerusalem, which is in Judah, and build the house of the LORD God of Israel, (he is the God,) which is in Jerusalem.”

In spite of Cyrus’ decree to rebuild the temple in Jerusalem, Cambyses stopped the work. However, his successor king Darius established his own personal decree in the second year of his reign. Darius’ decree regarding the temple is the first to reinforce and support Cyrus’ decree. Just as in Cyrus’ decree, the commandment of king Darius dealt only with the temple. Ezra 6:7-12 records the words of Darius as follows:

“Let the work of this house of God alone; let the governor of the Jews and the elders of the Jews build this house of God in his place. (8) Moreover I make a decree what ye shall do to the elders of these Jews for the building of this house of God: that of the king's goods, even of the tribute beyond the river, forthwith expenses be given unto these men, that they be not hindered. (9) And that which they have need of, both young bullocks, and rams, and lambs, for the burnt offerings of the God of heaven, wheat, salt, wine, and oil, according to the appointment of the priests which are at Jerusalem, let it be given them day by day without fail: (10) That they may offer sacrifices of sweet savours unto the God of heaven, and pray for the life of the king, and of his sons. (11) Also I have made a decree, that whosoever shall alter this word, let timber be pulled down from his house, and being set up, let him be hanged thereon; and let his house be made a dunghill for this. (12) And the God that hath caused his name to dwell there destroy all kings and people, that shall put to their hand to alter and to destroy this house of God which is at Jerusalem. I Darius have made a decree; let it be done with speed.”

Though Cyrus and Darius provided the commandments to rebuild the temple in Jerusalem, it was actually king Artaxerxes I Longimanus, a successor of king Darius, who provided the decree and commandment to restore and build the city of Jerusalem.

Artaxerxes I began his reign as the king of Persia in 465 BC. Up until this moment in time and according to the information given in Nehemiah 1:3-4, Nehemiah 2:3 and Nehemiah 7:4, it is clear that the city was not yet rebuilt:

Nehemiah 1:3-4 “And they said unto me, The remnant that are left of the captivity there in the province are in great affliction and reproach: the wall of Jerusalem also is broken down, and the gates thereof are burned with fire. And it came to pass, when I heard these words, that I sat down and wept, and mourned certain days, and fasted, and prayed before the God of heaven.”
Nehemiah 2:3 “And said unto the king, Let the king live for ever: why should not my countenance be sad, when the city, the place of my fathers' sepulchres, lieth waste, and the gates thereof are consumed with fire?"
Nehemiah 7:4 “Now the city was large and great: but the people were few therein, and the houses were not builded.”
According to Nehemiah 2:1-8, in the month of Nisan in the twentieth year of his reign, king Artaxerxes I Longimanus established his decree to restore and build Jerusalem. Since history records that Artaxerxes began his reign in 465 BC, this commandment took place in Nisan 445 BC:

“And it came to pass in the month Nisan, in the twentieth year of Artaxerxes the king, that wine was before him: and I took up the wine, and gave it unto the king. Now I had not been beforetime sad in his presence. (2) Wherefore the king said unto me, Why is thy countenance sad, seeing thou art not sick? this is nothing else but sorrow of heart. Then I was very sore afraid, (3) And said unto the king, Let the king live for ever: why should not my countenance be sad, when the city, the place of my fathers' sepulchres, lieth waste, and the gates thereof are consumed with fire? (4) Then the king said unto me, For what dost thou make request? So I prayed to the God of heaven. (5) And I said unto the king, If it please the king, and if thy servant have found favour in thy sight, that thou wouldest send me unto Judah, unto the city of my fathers' sepulchres, that I may build it. (6) And the king said unto me, (the queen also sitting by him,) For how long shall thy journey be? and when wilt thou re turn? So it pleased the king to send me; and I set him a time. (7) Moreover I said unto the king, If it please the king, let letters be given me to the governors beyond the river, that they may convey me over till I come into Judah; (8) And a letter unto Asaph the keeper of the king's forest, that he may give me timber to make beams for the gates of the palace which appertained to the house, and for the wall of the city, and for the house that I shall enter into. And the king granted me, according to the good hand of my God upon me.”

In this passage, Nehemiah indicates to Artaxerxes that he was saddened by the fact that the city and the gates of Jerusalem remained in ruins (verse 3). He requested that the king grant him permission to rebuild Jerusalem and the gates of the city (verse 4-5). According to verse 8, Artaxerxes granted Nehemiah’s request with an official letter sent to Asaph, the keeper of the king’s forest, for materials needed to make beams for the gates and the walls of the city.

According to Daniel 9:25, Gabriel proclaimed that the “commandment to restore and to build Jerusalem unto the Messiah the Prince shall be seven weeks, and threescore and two weeks," a total of sixty-nine weeks of years, or 483 years. Therefore, since Artaxerxes provided the specific decree to restore and to build Jerusalem in the month of Nisan in 445 BC, it was at this precise moment in history at which the countdown to the Messiah began. In addition, this month of Nisan (March/April) in 445 BC begins the seventy weeks or 490 years indicated in Daniel 9:24-26.

the Hebrew does NOT say 70 weeks...........it says 70 sevens

see the NLT version of Dan 9;26 below

70 is a bible number
7 is a bible number
70 times 7 is an amplification of bible numbers

how does God do this stuff?,,,,,,,,,,,,,He makes it work out to dates with bible numbers,,,,,,,,,,and He is working with people with FREE-WILL?!

Proverbs says that God can turn the thoughts of a man left or right, just like turning a stream of water.
