Shalom,

Jn 1:43 The next day HE wanted to come out to Galilee and HE found Philip. And Y'SHUA said to him, "You must continually follow me."
Jn 1:44 And Philip was from Bethsaida, from the city of Andrew and Peter.
Jn 1:45 Philip found Nathaniel and said to him, "We have found about whom Moses and the Prophets wrote in The Torah, Y'SHUA, son of Joseph, the One from Nazareth."
Jn 1:46 And Nathaniel said to him,
Can anything good come from Nazareth?" Philip said to him, "You must come and see."
Jn 1:47 And Y'SHUA saw Nathaniel coming toward HIM and said concerning him, "Behold a true Israeli in whom there is no deceit."
Jn 1:48 And Nathaniel said to HIM, "How do you know me?" Y'SHUA answered and said to him, "I saw you while you were under the fig tree before Philip called you."
Jn 1:49 Nathaniel answered HIM, "Rabbi, you are The Son of YHVH, you are King of Israel."
Jn 1:50 Y'SHUA answered and said to him, "Do you believe because I said to you that I saw you under the fig tree? You will see better things that these."
Jn 1:51 And HE said to him, "Most assuredly I say to you, you will see Heaven when it opens and the angels of YHVH are ascending from and descending upon The Son of Man."
As with most of the early parts of the Gospels this is essentially background information that over time becomes of interest to others. It is not all that important in the overall scheme of things however. For the most part what is said here is found elsewhere and if it were not in the Bible here it would not be a great loss to us unless.... Unless you take the moment to look carefully at what is said about Nathaniel.
We know virtually nothing about Nathaniel (often spelled Nathanael) except what we find in this passage and one more mention of him in the next chapter. It is often supposed that he is also referred to as Bartholomew but really that helps us not either for Bartholomew is equally unmentioned throughout the Scriptures and traditional Jewish history. All we really know about him we discover here while everything else is "supposed".
So why am I making a big deal about him?
Jn 1:47 And Y'SHUA saw Nathaniel coming toward HIM and said concerning him, "Behold a true Israeli in whom there is no deceit."
The word translated "Deceit" is dolos. It also means craft or guile and is taken from an obsolete primary verb (deleazō) meaning to bait, deceive, beguile or allure.
What Y'SHUA is saying is that in Nathaniel HE has found a truly open individual. In him HE has found someone who is not out to better himself at the expense of others. That in Nathaniel HE has found a true servant of YHVH, a true Israelite!
Nathaniel is not out to make a name for himself.
He is not out to be known as the most important person in the world.
He is not out to have his name in lights (so to speak).
Nathaniel is a true Israelite and that is all we really know about him.
When YHVH looks at you,
when others look at you,
what do they see?
Is there dolos in you?
Are you out for all you can get?
Are you desiring to make a name for yourself?
Is it your ambition to have "your" ministry on every TV in the world?
When others look upon you what do they see?
When YHVH looks at you what does HE see?
Are you a servant of YHVH?
Are you an Israelite?
