“Land of Milk and Honey.”
Archaeologists digging in Tel Rehov in northern Israel
have discovered remnants of ancient honeycombs, beeswax
and what they believe are the oldest intact beehives ever found dating
to around 900 B. C. Image by Amihai Mazar, Hebrew University of Jerusalem.
Archaeologist Amihai Mazar of Jerusalem's Hebrew University described the ancient beehives as made with straw and unbaked clay. Each oval-shaped hive had a hole at one end to allow the bees to come and go. At the other end was a clay lid so beekeepers could get to honeycombs inside. Scientists found thirty intact hives in three rows in a large room where the business of beekeeping must have been well-established.
