Have you ever been told that we can rest on the "finished work of Jesus" or words to that effect.

I came across this scripture which seems to indicate that there was something lacking in the sufferings of Christ which is filled up and completed as we share in the sufferings of Christ.

Col 1:24 Who now rejoice in my sufferings for you, and fill up that which is behind of the afflictions of Christ in my flesh for his body's sake, which is the church: KJV

Col 1:24 Who now rejoice in my sufferings for you and fill up those things that are wanting of the sufferings of Christ, in my flesh, for his body, which is the church: DR

Col 1:24 Now I rejoice in my sufferings for your sake, and in my flesh I do my share on behalf of His body, which is the church, in filling up what is lacking in Christ's afflictions.

Col 1:24 I now rejoice in my sufferings for you, and fill up in my flesh what is lacking in the afflictions of Christ, for the sake of His body, which is the church, NKJV

Col 1:24 Now I rejoice in what was suffered for you, and I fill up in my flesh what is still lacking in regard to Christ's afflictions, for the sake of his body, which is the church. NIV

I'd be interested to hear other peoples ideas as to how they reconcile this scripture with the one in
John 19:30 When Jesus therefore had received the vinegar, he said, It is finished: and he bowed his head, and gave up the ghost.

i like the Amplified Bible.

http://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?book_...&version=45

17And He Himself existed before all things, and in Him all things consist (cohere, are held together).(A)

18He also is the Head of [His] body, the church; seeing He is the Beginning, the Firstborn from among the dead, so that He alone in everything and in every respect might occupy the chief place [stand first and be preeminent].

19For it has pleased [the Father] that all the divine fullness (the sum total of the divine perfection, powers, and attributes) should dwell in Him [p]permanently.

20And God purposed that through ([q]by the service, the intervention of) Him [the Son] all things should be completely reconciled [r]back to Himself, whether on earth or in heaven, as through Him, [the Father] made peace by means of the blood of His cross.

21And although you at one time were estranged and alienated from Him and were of hostile attitude of mind in your wicked activities,

22Yet now has [Christ, the Messiah] reconciled [you to God] in the body of His flesh through death, in order to present you holy and faultless and irreproachable in His [the Father's] presence.

23[And this He will do] provided that you continue to [s]stay with and in the faith [in Christ], well-grounded and settled and steadfast, not shifting or moving away from the hope [which rests on and is inspired by] the glad tidings (the Gospel), which you heard and which has been preached [t][as being designed for and offered without restrictions] to every person under heaven, and of which [Gospel] I, Paul, became a minister.

24[Even] now I rejoice in [u]the midst of my sufferings on your behalf. And in my own person I am making up whatever is still lacking and remains to be completed [[v]on our part] of Christ's afflictions, for the sake of His body, which is the church.

25In it I became a minister in accordance with the divine [w]stewardship which was entrusted to me for you [as its object and for your benefit], to make the Word of God fully known [among you]--

26The mystery of which was hidden for ages and generations [[x]from angels and men], but is now revealed to His holy people (the saints),

27To whom God was pleased to make known how great for the Gentiles are the riches of the glory of this mystery, which is Christ within and among you, the Hope of [realizing the] glory.

28Him we preach and proclaim, warning and admonishing everyone and instructing everyone in all wisdom ([y]comprehensive insight into the ways and purposes of God), that we may present every person mature (full-grown, fully initiated, complete, and perfect) in Christ (the Anointed One).

29For this I labor [[z]unto weariness], striving with all the [aa]superhuman energy which He so mightily enkindles and works within me.

my thoughts:
the KJV is a poor translation............it has some mistakes , as our posts indicate.

the sufferings and good works of Christ (or anyone else) are NOT the Price paid for our Redemption.
The Death of Christ is the Price paid for our Redemption.

the Amplified Bible is more honest about OSAS than other translations..................OSAS is not true.

"It is finished" means that Christ had completed this part of what must be done. This does not mean that everything was finished. If this in fact were true, then why did Jesus come back and remain with the Apostles for another 40 days or so. Jesus Christ is not ONLY about his crucifiction and resurrection. Our salvation is not ONLY about Jesus death and resurrection. If this were all there was then why did Jesus establish a church at all.

God Bless,

I see that too. It was finished as far as buying us back. He had the work of the Father to do when He was on earth just as we all do. His work was for purchasing us. And quite a work it was to be who He was and go through what he did alone, without the heavens and with all of hell attacking Him in His last moments. Because of Him, we never have to go through that. Good thing....we'd fail.

but there is still alot or work to do for us and for Him. He will be back soon and although the outcome has been decided on that cross, the leg work has to be done.

And we have alot of work to do for the kingdom, just as He explained when He returned after death.

We are redeemed, that is finished. We just have to work to tell everyone about it!

Patmos
Scriptures elaborate on the "It is finished" means.

It means that the power of the works of the devil have been defeated. Not the devil himeself. In other words, you can escape your past mistakes through our Glorious Saviour Jesus Christ work on the cross...

As far as Paul suffering and establishing the Church of the Gentiles, these things are well documented...surely Paul suffered a lot and that was a guarantee that Jesus gave him...I will make him suffer for my name sake....

ouch...

So since only the power of the works of the devil have been defeated, the field is large and their few laborers.........because they don't pick up their cross daily

the wages of sin is death...(not sufferings, good works, etc)

the good works and sufferings of Christ and me and others HAVE NOTHING TO DO WITH BUYING OUR SALVATION FROM SIN.

the DEATH OF CHRIST is the purchase price of our salvation from sin.

sufferings are the consequence of our sin.

persecutions are the free-will choice of wicked people.

doing good works are the fruit of the Holy Spirit (Gal 5;22)...........where-ever Jesus goes, love goes........God is love.

the resurrection of Christ is not the purchase price of our salvation........He rose from the dead because Christ lived a sinless life, and God chose to raise Christ from the dead.

Christ married the Church,.........so, we enjoy resurrection from the dead, because Christ gives us resurrection as a free gift.
spooky
It is my belief that when Jesus said it is finished, He meant many things, some of which were that He had fulfilled every letter of the Law (and nailed it to the tree!), that with His words he had washed us, with His death (and resurrection) He had justified us, and that with His going to the Father (and sending the Holy Spirit!!) He had sanctified us. With His stripes we are healed, He was bruised for our transgressions, all of the things that He intended to endure for us earned our pardon. What Paul "added" to those things is for our learning the gospel of Christ, of which Paul was the steward. Paul tells us the things that Jesus said His Disciples could not bear until the Holy Spirit came to give us the ability to understand spiritual things... things Paul the Jew had to give those he persecuted because of his unbelief. Paul had to go through all of the things that the 144K will have to endure for their heritage and for their witness of the Messiah. Paul the Jew was persecuted by the Jews for his witness of The Christ... irony? Because Paul brought the dispensation of the Grace of God to the Gentiles... not the Kingdom Gospel that Christ proclaimed. The two gospels have the same founder, but different methods. And this is what the meaning of rightly dividing is all about. The Jews have always had to earn their way by works, we have only to learn that God does it all... every single thing. We HAVE the Sabbath Rest. We ARE the beautiful Bride who has no need to toil, or soil her perfect hands. Because we have been washed, we have been justified, we have been sanctified by Our Risen Lord.
