Jn 8:31 Therefore JESUS was saying to the Jewish people who believed in Him, "If you would remain in My word, you are truly My disciples
Jn 8:32 and you will know the truth, and the truth will make you free."
Jn 8:33 They answered Him, "We are Abraham's seed and we have never been slaves: how do You say that 'You will become free.'"
Jn 8:34 JESUS answered them, "I most definitely say to you that everyone who commits sin is a slave of sin.
Jn 8:35 And the slave does not stay in the house forever, the son does stay forever.
Jn 8:36 If therefore the Son would set you free, you will truly be free.
Jn 8:37 I know that you are Abraham's seed: but you are seeking to kill Me, because My message does not take hold in you.
Jn 8:38 I am saying what I have seen from The FATHER: but you are doing what you heard from your father."
So much freedom and yet so few that are free in deed!
This is a rather familiar group of scriptures and yet with so many different groups calling them selves CHRISTian as well as so many different opinions as to what it is to be a CHRISTian and yet even more different views on how one is to live if they are a CHRISTian I must stop and contemplate what it is to truly be free?
Without stirring up all the controversy over different versions of the Bible we still must examine words in order to obtain the depth of understanding that we desire. In Jn 8:31 we see used the word "remain". In the Greek the word is meno. In some versions they translate this word as "continue" which is not a bad translation and yet it still falls short of conveying the fullness of the word. A better translation than either of these would be to say, 'we are to "live in"'. Y'SHUA is telling those listening as well as us to "live in" HIS word, converting the written Word of YHVH into action, to bring The FATHER's love (Jn 3:16) for all of mankind to all of mankind. To make HIS words exactly the life that we live before all others. To make HIS words our life!
In verses 33-35 we see some form of the Greek word doulos being used and translated slave or in bondage or some such variety of the word. This is an accurate translation and yet it leaves us without a needed understanding. "Servant" is a correct translation of three words actually. The Greek words of diakonos, oiketays, and doulous could all be translated as servants, slaves or to be in bondage without being wrong and yet not being completely right either.
Diakonos is probably best known and translated as minister or deacon while oiketays and doulous are much more accurately translated as slave, servant, or bondservant. An oiketays was a bondservant who worked only as a household servant; a maid, cook, nurse, butler, or in some similar capacity. This type of a bondservant was purchased or contracted for a specific time or job. We see this type of relationship reflected in the life of Jacob as he was a bondservant to Laban in order to obtain his daughter Rachel in marriage (Gen 29:16-28).
A believer (doulous) in Y'SHUA was purchased with the life of Y'SHUA on the cross. In this HE therefore created a bondservant relationship with us that requires of us a total obligation to HIM. This is not the same as slavery, this is not the same as oiketays or being an indentured servant with but a set time of obligation. We still have a freewill and can break the contract whereas a slave is forced to complete the time of the contract. The requirement upon us comes with a continual freedom. As long as we lay down our life or what we would term as our will, to live in HIS will or to let HIS life live within us then we have the freedom of a Son of HIS FATHER, YHVH. We become one with HIM and with The FATHER in this manner. We lay down our life in order to take up HIS life and let HIM be resurrected upon the earth being seen alive within and through us. We become conformed into HIS image which was also the expressed image of The FATHER. We then also through this become the expressed image of The FATHER on the earth. Who or what we are, our will, our way, our life must die in order for us to live freely in HIM, to be one with HIM.

When mankind in the form of Adam was "born" or created or whatever term you can grab a hold of, he was born of YHVH in freedom as The Son of YHVH. He was the Only Begotten of YHVH, but.... "BUT" Jn 8:31 ...If you would remain in My word...., but he did not remain! Adam was given but one Law, one instruction, one requirement and that was not to touch or eat of the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil. He therefore sinned! He chose to break his contract with YHVH and go his own way. In Luke 15:11-31 Y'SHUA relates what happened to us (mankind) in the form of the parable of the Prodigal Son. This son chose to go his own way, to do his own thing rather than to live in the way of his father. He broke his contract with his father in order to do things his own way. He too sinned. Finally he had an epiphany! It finally dawns upon him as we see...
Lk 15:17 And then he came to himself (flash - the light comes on) and said, 'How many hired hands of my father abound in food, but I am dying here in famine.
Lk 15:18 When I get up I will go to my father and I will say to him, "Father, I sinned against Heaven and before you,
Lk 15:19 I am no longer worthy to be called your son: you must make me as one of your hands.'"
This son had an epiphany and the light of righteousness dawned within his heart. He came to his senses and humbled himself before his father and in front of others. He was now ready and willing to live within the constraints of servitude in order to receive the benefits of even the least of all of his father's servants. He would still retain the right to choose to leave or to break this contract but now he was different. He no longer had the desire to leave or to break his contract. He no longer wanted to do things his way. He was now giving himself over totally to the will, the way or the life of his father. He was now a 'doulous'. He was now a servant by choice. He was now free to live as a Son of The FATHER. He now knew the truth and the same truth had now set him free!
How free are you?
Have you had an epiphany?
