UK 'at risk' from deadly bird flu T
Thursday October 13, 04:57 PM
The UK is at risk from the most virulent strain of bird flu, according to Britain's chief veterinary officer.
Diseased birds from Turkey have tested positive for the deadly H5N1 strain after being sent to the UK for analysis.
The outbreak of avian influenza occurred in the Asian part of Turkey and was first detected earlier this month.
Britain's top veterinary officer Dr Debby Reynolds said a rapid risk assessment would be carried out after the birds tested positive for the deadly H5N1 strain.
She said a full contingency plan was in place in case bird flu was confirmed in poultry in the UK.
She said it was not yet known whether the virus found in birds in Romania was the same deadly strain.
"Confirmation that highly pathogenic avian influenza has been found in Turkey and that Avian influenza is now also in Romania is of concern," she said.
"It shows there is a risk to the UK and this is a developing situation, which we are monitoring closely."
Dr Reynolds urged anyone who suspected the disease among birds to report it immediately.
As you know guys I'm from the UK and God has been speaking to my heart all this week about preparation. Ive ordered Bird Flu masks for protection as I fear the worst. Please pray for us in Europe.
Thanks
Sarah

Toronto Legionnaires' outbreak spreads beyond care facility
Oct 13 2:47 PM US/Eastern

Two more cases of Legionnaires' disease have been discovered near the Toronto retirement home where an outbreak killed 17 people earlier this month, health officials announced.
The two people, a patient from a senior citizens' home next door and a hospital worker across the street, had never visited the contaminated Seven Oaks Home for the Aged, but their infections are linked to the outbreak, Toronto's medical health officer, David McKeown, told reporters.
"It's conceivable (with) an air conditioning system which produces aerosol as part of a cooling process on top of the building, that that aerosol, including the bacteria, could get sucked into a building's air conditioning system or could float down on the street in front of the building and be inhaled by someone passing by," McKeown said.
"This can happen, has happened in other outbreaks, and this is the kind of thing that we're looking at in the investigation at this point," he said.
The respiratory ailment sparked citywide panic before being identified last week as Legionnaires' disease.
It infected 71 residents, 23 employees and 14 visitors to the retirement home since it was first detected on September 25, spreading at an alarming rate, reminiscent of the severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) outbreak two years ago, which killed 44 people in Canada's biggest city.
Both people diagnosed Thursday bring the total number infected to 110. Both had been misdiagnosed initially, but lab tests confirmed they had contracted Legionnaires' disease.
They are now recovering and no new cases are expected, McKeown said. The last death was reported October 5.
"We do believe that the outbreak essentially is over," McKeown said.
The bacteria that cause the disease, first discovered in the United States in 1976, are common in nature, and infections can be treated with antibiotics, though they often hit the elderly harder. People are exposed when they breathe in air contaminated by droplets containing the organism.
The source of the Toronto infection still eludes investigators, who have checked plumbing and air conditioning systems at Seven Oaks and scanned a 1.5-kilometer (one-mile) radius around the building for possible sources of the bacteria.

Update of European Bird Flu -
European bird flu experts hold crisis talks
Friday October 14, 02:20 AM
BRUSSELS (Reuters) - European bird flu experts are to hold an emergency meeting on Friday, a day after health officials confirmed what many had long feared was inevitable -- the spread of the deadly H5N1 strain from Asia to Europe.
British scientists are also scrutinising bird flu samples from Romania to determine whether the virus found in three ducks in the Danube Delta last week was H5N1, which
has killed more than 60 people in Asia since 2003.
Romania sent the samples to a British laboratory on Thursday afternoon, and Britain's chief vet said she expected the final results to be known sometime on Friday.
EU Health and Consumer Protection Commissioner Markos Kyprianou said on Thursday a bird flu outbreak in Turkey was indeed H5N1 -- which first surfaced in Hong Kong eight years ago -- and that Europe should prepare for a pandemic.
H5N1 is considered the biggest direct disease threat to humanity. Experts estimate that, if it acquires the ability to infect people easily and spread from person to person efficiently, it will make more than 25 million people seriously ill and kill as many as 7 million.
European countries tightened border controls on poultry and poultry products but fear the real threat may come from the skies as returning migratory birds bring the virus home.
The European Commission said Friday's emergency meeting would look at the risk migratory birds might pose for the EU.
"The experts' groups will then issue recommendations on the potential risk for humans in contact with such birds," it said in a statement.
Avian flu is currently transmitted to humans only if they eat or live in close contact with infected birds. But scientists say the H5N1 strain is mutating towards a form that could pass between humans.
There is already panic buying of anti viral vaccines and masks in eastern europe and Germany as we speak. My order of masks is on its way....

I heard on the new a few days ago that 30% of the world is supposed to be infected. Now, I am sure. I have been asked and I am sure that is what they said 30%. I just don't see it. 60 people in Asia since 2003. Yes, others around the world and maybe it is mutating into something other than its original form, but 30%? Sound like a real good plan for the drug companies, but I am no doctor. I wondered why another hurricane was causing so much fuss when it was still in the Atalntic.
