Israel Warns Tourists to Flee Sinai Sunday, October 2, 2005 / 28 Elul 5765

Israel intelligence officials urged tourists to leave the Sinai area immediately in the wake of reports of imminent terrorist attacks there and elsewhere in Egypt.

Arab terrorists staged three attacks in Sinai during the past year, including one multiple attack that killed 12 Israelis.

The National Security Council have strengthened previous strong warnings that terrorists are planning attacks, and officials emphasized on Saturday that they have acquired "concrete" evidence of impending attacks. They fear terrorists will kidnap Israeli tourists and use them as hostages to barter for terrorists imprisoned in Israel.

More than 2,000 Israeli tourists traveled to Sinai Friday and Saturday, and more than 30,000 plan to travel to the tourist area for the Succoth (Tabernacles) holiday, which follows Yom Kippur.

Security officials revealed last month that, in the wake of the IDF's withdrawal from the Gaza region, thousands of Arabs from Gaza streamed into Sinai. Egyptian authorities were overwhelmed by Hamas terrorists, who blew a hole in the wall on the border dividing the city of Rafiah, allowing free entry to and from Gaza.
