You're totally right. It was once said that all it took for evil to flourish was for good men to do nothing. Anne Frank as a teenager believed that their was good in everyone deep down. If Hitler was afraid of Jews, it had to do with his grandiose plans being thwarted by them. A Jew helped Hitler out when he was young. Hitler did not have a loving Father, rather he had one who was abusive and an authoritarian. At one point in his life he was left quite alone, being the only person besides the priest at his brother's funeral. The Jewish guy may have been gay and may have gotten some sexual charge from Hitler or was at least leering. In any event Hitler had gay liasons and may have tried it out at least a few times. He had an officer killed to make sure no personal testimony of his interest was spread around. Hitler was also sexually perverted in some ways, indulging in watching pornographic films and looking at that kind of art. One of the paintings-drawings was a sexually attractive nude with a snake wrapped around her legs. To me it is horrific, I hate snakes anyway.
Hitler spent a lot of time as a teen dreaming up his version of utopia, a Europe that was idyllic and noble, powerful and serene. His Mom came up with enough money to provide a lot of idle time for him. He dreamt of blond and buxom virgins with braided hair, Nordic men of daring and was thoroughly enchanted with returning Germany to days of yore before the nymphs and fairies were scared away. All the best of what had been Europe was garnered into his mind's storehouse, past days of greatness in the Greek and Roman civilizations along with the noble Teuton warriors. He patterned the SS on the Society of Jesus, the Jesuits even though he envied and hated them. There is your word "fear" being suggested again.
Was he not like Pharoah who asked Moses who this Yahweh is? Pharoah directed the Children of Israel to build noble and grand buildings, temples laden with icons of their version of the gods on them? In Hitler's mind establishing a paradise on Earth had but one enemy in history: God, specifically the God of the Bible. Having a super race of Nordic breed solely surviving into Hitler's version of the future Millenial reign of Jesus had an opponent: Yahweh, Jesus Himself. The Egyptians knew of the coming Virgin, Mother of God, Mother of God on Earth, Jesus. They knew the words "In Beginning Elohiym Created the Heavens and Earth." They had preserved some of the direct quotes of God through the years but forgot Him. The pneumonic devices for remembering the story of Creation preserved in the Bible for us in Genesis 1:1 became gods of sorts and then gods. The Creation was anthropomorphisized with Nut and Geb replacing the Heavens and Earth for instance. Right after Pharoah and his army drowned the Egyptians worshipped one God with the return to who they thought the One True God was. He was represented in their iconography as the Sun, the life-giving Sun. The Queen of Pharoah wrote to people we know as Phoenicians to find a king and ended up with one that was perhaps a figurehead, I am not sure, but he was credited with a lot of things.
Who but Jesus stood in the way of Hitler? The Thousand Year Reich was no coincidence, a reign designed to succeed where Pharoah had failed. The chief opposition to Hitler was the Jewish God. Joseph was effectively the ruler of Egypt and then his people became slaves, treated cruely and driven mercilessly. Yet, Moses found Yahweh and it signaled the death of Pharoah. Grand and glorious Egypt that ruled mightily was brought to political chaos by a Hebrew slave, Hitler knew that. Jesus entered this world as a baby, yet Herod had children, Jewish children killed in a genocide by sword.
Do you see that Hitler feared the same thing Herod did? This baby Jesus was heralded as the King of the Jews, yet struck terror into the heart of Herod. Herod of the time of the birth of Jesus murdered his grandfather to gain power. He was a ruthless king and yet, Jesus survived by the help of God's Holy Angels. The Jewish God was no joke and Hitler knew it. Officers in the Luftwaffen were forbidden to have a copy of the Bible upon pain of death should they be caught.
Hitler was afraid of God. He feared Jesus. All of his dreams and all that would provide a salve for his insecurities and defects would be taken from him by the God of the Jews, the King of the Jews. Notice that word "Jew". Hitler was suffering from monorchidism, low self-esteem lay below the surface of this brown-haired leader of the Aryan Race. He didn't have blond hair but no one pointed it out to him I suspect. He was afraid of finding himself as he truly was in his lowest moments. He feared failure. Who alone did not fail and cannot fail? God, the God of the Jews.
There is a lot more to it than I let on perhaps and I could elaborate, but hopefully you get the idea.

Solzhenitsyn probably summed it up best in Gulag Archipelago as this is the same question he asked about people being dragged to their deaths or to slave camps. I will give a flavor of what he said, I cannot quote him.

The Jewish people of Kiev were rousted out by the Einsatzgruppen one autumn morning and walked to a rugged ravine where they were machine-gunned and pushed into it. There is a State Department document covering the years from 1931 to the war. We knew trouble ahead, trouble behind and what was important we knew should not reach our shores. We tried to avoid war. Look at today, we liberated Iraq and stopped similar atrocities, found mass graves and people are so stupid the President was criticized. He still is criticized. We acted on what we knew were dangers and possible atrocities in Iraq and our people are so degraded many of us still think it was wrong with the evidence showing the opposite.
I think Roosevelt wisely rode things out helping Great Britain with shipments in Liberty ships and such, knowing Americans have always thought a standing army to be evil but whe push comes to shove the army gets support should we be attacked. Part of it is we did not have a galvanized and visceral feel or knowledge definite enough to pre-emptively strike. Petain compromised in France and The Battle of Britain were events signalling the world is in for it. Nations and peoples persecute people on a regular basis all the time.
Look at the mass slaughter of Christians in Africa. The Muslims plan to make Africa exclusively Muslim, no others need apply. What is the world doing now? Should other countries invade the continent of Africa in all out war against the Muslims?
There have been about 10 to 15 million people slaughtered in Africa in less than 20 years. Are you upset? Are there cries to Heaven for their sake? How many people on this forum post about the wholesale slaughter in Sudan? Who has mourned them, our Christian brothers and sisters?
How many people know The Sudan Peace Act was set for a vote on September 11, 2001 and was forgotten in the aftermath?
What was done about Idi Amin? He had safe harbor in Iraq simply because he was a Muslim. Should a Christian or Jewish militant group have gone in after him?
I am not chiding but I would like to say that communication, transfer of knowledge, intelligence was not as good then as it is now. We have the internet and people blogging from hell on earth and yet, nothing is done so overtly as to stop this insanity of other nations. Countries have national sovereignty and can do their people how they want for the most part.
What we did in Iraq was because Saddam would have attempted and was attempting to achieve hegemony, Cat Daddy of the Arab world and would have loved to roll into Jerusalem as conqueror, the Madhi. There was a threat to our national security, no doubt. He did have weapons of mass destruction, period.
Look how things have been politicized since 2003 with Iraq.
The war on terror is real but people here, including the President perhaps, think it is not worth winning maybe or do not take the terrorists seriously. People actually believe the story we only went in because of oil, riches, wealth. That is not true.
Now, back to the Jews, the Holocaust. We did not know what we know now. Still, we did not intervene for reasons like national sovereignty et cetera.

Jews were being treated any differently than before in Europe?
